>There were reports over the weekend of AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB graphics cards coming equipped with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM installed. However the BIOS used by these '4GB' cards only allowed access to half of the physically installed RAM. To get access to the full amount of RAM some enterprising 4GB graphics card users claim to have successfully flashed a retail RX 480 8GB card BIOS.

too bad amd stopped production of the reference 4gb design
>>
>>55442916
too bad it doesn't affect performance since the GPU is mid-tier trash
>>
Meh, only useful if your running two of them and even then off a game is using more than 4 gigs it's running 4k and these just aren't enough.
>>
Is this for real? What's AMD's game? No way they are this naive.

Give special bios to reviewers in good faith, who then turn around and distribute it to everyone when it wasn't intended to, potentially bricking people's cards. Most likely nvidia shills.
>>
>AMD jewed people into paying extra for 8GB cards

Not surprising.

Everyone seems happy but you

If it was nvidia everyone would be shilling their praises

>Muh nvidia boogeyman

It's okay when AMD does it, of course. Pay up goy, we're for the consumer!

marketing can have a hivemind effect, it's scary

Nvidia and Intel have in the past, and still do the same thing. It's much less expensive to manufacture a single processor / PCB and create the tiers in software / firmware to absorb consumer surplus. The same thing happened with the 6950 and 6970 5 years ago and nobody cared; free upgrade if you're willing to risk bricking.

So this is your selling point?
This is the ultimate mod?

Because Blops 3 doesn't actually need 4GB, let alone 8, so is a terrible choice of game to demonstrate the benefits. It uses more for cache when it detects a higher amount, which explains the small increase. In a game that actually NEEDS 4GB+ (like Rise of the Tomb Raider or GTA V), the difference will be much larger, especially in terms of minimums.
>>
What is the risk of bricking?
>>
>>55445315
None, unless you have a power outage mid-flash. Even then you can recover the situation if you have an iGPU.
>>
>>55445334
Does flashing it invalidate the warranty or is this pretty much a free upgrade?
>>

>Does flashing it invalidate the warranty
Yes of course.
>>
>>55445379
It does technically but you can just reflash your backup. There's no way they'd know you flashed it.
