I need a very cheap device, which is able to run ubuntu or comparable distros and can be used for basic programming/ latex etc.

I'm a PhD student who usually uses ThinkPads for my work. I do stats, and most of my computation is done on a department computer farm.
I took a chance on a chrome book and it's been great. I'd highly recommend it.
