Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I have a ubuntu box running an SSH server and wondering how I should into SSH tunnelling?

Is there something fucked with the way I'm mounting storage in my fstab?

I want it to auto mount so the things I store on it will be able to read and write to it on startup witout me needing to open it, but I can't get it to automount. Don't really know what I'm doing wrong.

Then if I try to access it after having this fstab, it's not in /media and it throws me an error if I just directly try to do it.

>>
>>55442437
Followed the instructions perfectly. Tried using PlayOnLinux and that can't even download the battle net client, it simply crashes and breaks no matter what.

Installing the Battle net client from their website works, but it doesn't let you log in. Then the games themselves don't actually work.

All I've found online are people saying it works fine doing it the way I've done it.

Don't fall for the "hurr you learn more with Arch :^)" meme. You can learn on any of them. If you want to get your hands dirty a bit more, maybe don't go for Ubuntu (since it automates a bunch of things for you).

Maybe try Debian and upgrade it to Testing once you have it installed

>All I've found online are people saying it works fine doing it the way I've done it.
Then clearly they're doing it right and you're not doing it right somewhere.

Are they also using PlayOnLinux or are they using just Wine? (If you didn't know, PoL is a wrapper for Wine meant to make it more user friendly)

If they're using just Wine, then maybe try uninstalling PoL and learn how to configure Wine itself properly. Because I can tell you I've gotten a bunch of things working on Wine, ranging from Platinum rating to Silver rating games.

I'd suggest you to execute a GPU passthrough to just give you more flexibility than using Wine, but it might be a very daunting task which you might not even really need

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16dbAUrtMX4

And no, you don't need Arch for this. They just happened to use Arch in the example.

I want to make a special Debian install USB.

The goal is to use it to install Debian AND some additional drivers (property wireless support) and software (Emacs and other stuff) that is not typically included in the normal install image. I know how to easily install these after the OS install if I have a hard line to the internet, but would like to have it all freshly installed without connecting to anything else.

Note this is NOT the same as a live USB.

Any suggestions on how to go about this?

Thanks

I was using the lightdm gtk+ settings greeter to try the changes. It gives the option to remove the accessibility and keyboard options in the header, yet when the option is changed nothing happens.

If it works by changing the theme/icon text in the conf file, would it be possible to insert an option here to hide these and if so what?

I am switching to Ganoo Linucks for good.

I don't know what to use. I'm so confused, I used Ubuntu 2 years ago for two months straight and didn't like it - it was too restrictive. I had to constantly go into the terminal to change things, then realized that was completely the opposite of what Canonical's supposed intentions are. (an easy-user experience)

Now I'm reading about Fedora, and apparently SELinux conflicts with Steam, so I started looking up SELinux and discovered one of its authors is the NSA? I'm even more confused now.

What is a good distro that will work decently out of box, and is secure? I am going to be using this on my daily driver, I just built my first desktop and am trying to decide what OS to install while I wait for the monitors to get here since I can't use it yet.

Are Debian, Fedora, or Linux Mint Debian good choices? I don't want to spend hours setting it up, or compiling it from source, I just want the shit to work. That isn't to say I'm unwilling to learn, I just don't want maintaining my Linux install to become a second full-time job.

Linux manages to be the most unintuitive shit I've ever used.

Ubuntu and Mint are beginner-friendly experiences but can turn out to be rather troublesome sometimes in their hand holding

If you want to work, Debian and Fedora are good choices. I prefer Debian, and I always upgrade it to Testing/Sid but that's just me.

But if you want to use Linux, you're going to need to lose your fear of the terminal.

Debian and Fedora are good choices is you somewhat care about freedom
I'd recommend staying away from Mint

Also do not get the GNOME desktop (Default on both debian and fedora) as that isn't that intuitive for a first time user
I recommend KDE or Xfce4

imho let him decide for himself which DE he likes better.

If he's coming from Windows, then CInammon might be a good choice
I personally hate KDE and much prefer GNOME, but it's definitely lacking in some respects
I don't like XFCE because of its bugginess and lack of development
If lightness is a priority, I much prefer LXDE to XFCE because it's still customizable and looks like Windows out of the box.

I used Fedora, Linux Mint, Manjaro, Ubuntu, Crunchbang all 4 years ago.

I didn't like Gnome, I definitely Liked Cinnamon, and I didn't see what the difference is between LXDE and XFCE (they both ran as fast). I've heard KDE is bloat.

Now I'm trying to decide between Fedora 24 Cinnamon, or Debian Jesse Cinnamon.
I haven't used Debian before, and I haven't Fedora since they had YUM packages, apparently they've got something called DNF now?
Is one easier to use than the other?

>>
>>55444830
Here's my recommendation

Go install Debian Jessie. During installation, when asked which DE you want, un-select "Debian Desktop Environment (which is GNOME by default) and mark instead Cinammon. Once you're in your desktop and everything is running, upgrade your Debian to Testing. This is usually recommended for desktop users since Stable is more of a server distro. On your way you might face a few slight hurdles like "how should I partition my stuff", "how do I add myself to sudo", "where do I change my sources.list" and you'll find that out as you're going along.

And then, congratulations, you're running a perfectly respectable and usable Linux distro

>use aptitude instead of apt-get
Yes, but NEVER use aptitude when performing a dist-upgrade (like from Stable to Testing branch). Use apt-get for that. Aptitude is just easier to use most of the time and is nicer when telling you about and resolving dependencies. But I've never of anyone that bricked their box by using both, so, I guess if not out of fear, just use aptitude only out of convenience.

>use a window manager for efficiency
>linux noob
Lol. If you're new, you're better off installing a full fledged Desktop Environment (which comes out of the box with a Display Manager and a Window Manager, pre-configured) instead of a stand alone window manager. You can do that later, it's very easy to just install another one and select which one you want to use in your login screen.

Other tips

Do a net install. Ideally the unofficial one that includes non-free firmware, so it's less of a headache for you.

If you're a regular user, upgrade it to Testing after Stable's installation is done. Stable is mostly better for servers and the like, testing and sid are more for regular users and developers.

In your sources.list text file, you edit the 'jessie' parts with 'testing' and then do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and let'er rip. Also, where it says ftp.us.debian.org or whatever replace it with httpredir.debian.org so that it automatically looks for the closest and most uptodate mirror to you.

Install apt-listbugs. This is an absolute must when using testing or sid.

When in doubt, read the Debian wiki. Arch Wiki helps too on some more detailed issues you might have.

Also, read this anyway:

And what's the deal with wayland? I've been out of the loop for a bit, Is it recommended yet, or still wishy washy.

Also for the KVM PAssthrough, Is it possible to just mount the partition as a disk? I'd also like the hardrives to all be accessible from both the Host and the VM is this doable?

Make cowsay do a cowsay, which does a cowsay, saying cow.

For the wayand or the VM?
I've been reading up on the VM stuff and some of the guides are a bit conflicting. Nothing that more reading would fix, but for ease of access, I figured I'd ask.

For the VM. Make sure you got your hardware right

Don't do this shit unless you want to boot up and wonder why you're looking at a full-screen terminal.

$ cowsay -n <<< "$(cowsay -n <<< "$(cowsay cow)")"

I've got an i7 5960x and a 970, and my board supports virtualization. I'm not too worried about the hardware, Though I'm going to image my current setup just in case something goes wrong. I hope to be able to plug and play my current windows install instead of having to wipe and reformat everything.

Keep in mind Windows tends to be super touchy about hardware changes, and I don't know if it might throw a fit because of virtualized hardware and invalidating your serial key as non-legit

Worst case scenario, you pirate Win. No biggie

Yeah, I'm currently on pirated win10 anyways, My SSD array crashed a few times, before I replaced them, and it invalidated my windows key. I really should just re install to get a legit win 10 key before the offer is over.
Though no recommendations for Linux flavor/ wayland support?

Is it not possible to add commands to the context menus in dolphin manually? I know you can install things to add menus but I want to add my own commands.

Good luck

Forget about wayland support. Better wait for it to become more mature and actually release. Still a long way from that.

For Linux flavor it doesn't matter. Could be Debian. Could be Arch.
I was actually checking out this guy for advice on how to do it. I haven't done it myself but this might help you

I do this shit all the time on Debian testing. apt manages your packages, but at least be conscious of what most packages do in your system.
>>
xfce is nice and all, but I'd like to make a DE from scratch using the Debian net install. I should go read up on the Arch wiki to setup a barebones system, but what would you recommend? For starters, I'm thinking of i3 and moving up from there.

If you truely want to "build from scratch" use wmutils.
