What factors do you consider when trying to purchase something that isn't a meme?

I'm stuck between choice of laptops, but I'm not sure which of thinkpads, chromebooks, and macbooks are a meme

1. Can it work with free software
2. Does it please me aesthetically
3. Build quality
4. Price
>>
i explicitly do not consider /g/'s opinion as to whether its a "meme"
>>

All three of those are a meme, especially think pads. I use a newer Lenovo Edge. I would suggest getting one of those.

I have a lenovo ideapad already (and it's great), but I don't want to dual boot or vm another laptop for linux/os x, and macbooks and chromebooks look the best in that regards. Still though, /g/ says thinkpads are great and cheaper than chromebooks if you want a slightly less smooth linux environment

Think pads are a straight up /g/ troll. Macs are overpriced, and ChromeBooks go out of their way to prevent you from installing anything else on them, plus they tend to be highly under-powered.

Power and performance.
So I usually end up with high end consumer laptops with good cooling and price/performance.

I considered business laptops for build quality, but then realized it's useless for me since I'm not a mongoloid retard that drops laptops on a weekly basis.

1. Decide on powerlevel
>discrete gpu or igpu? 6W, 15W or 45W processor?
2. Decide on form factors
> numpad? 13" or 15"? Aluminum/Carbon fiber/polymer?
3. Decide on other nice to have things
>higher than 1080p resolution? thunderbolt connection? trackpoint? touchscreen?

Then list the products that fits my criteria. At that point its really not hard to choose from 3 or so laptops, but if you cant, add extra criteria till they are filtered out.

Same goes for phones, printers, watches, cars, and every technology really. Just define your requirements and there will be a single product best for your use case. Just keep in mind though, "Im an eingineering student who also play gaymes what lap is best?" is not a set amount of criteria.

Maybe I shout WHORE WHORE

There are no sensible laptop buys right now

When the next rMBP is released later this year it will be the only good laptop
