I just finished high school and I'm starting my first year in Community College in August. Various people tell me that i should buy a laptop, yet i don't see the use while studding my General Ed. in community college. I've also asked a mate who studies CS (which is the major I'm aiming for) at a local university if i will need a laptop when i transfer over to a university, which he replys "you really don't have to get one". What do you guys think, should i buy a laptop or is it just a meme.

The only options you should be looking for are Thinkpads, Elitebooks, Latitudes and Precisions.

Don't go for CS.
Go for EE with a specialization on computers.
They teach you C and assembly+ a few more specific languages and they give you knowledge you can use in real life.

You can get a x200 for 100-200 bucks. It's easy to upgrade them yourself.
If you want a newer model of the X line there are the x230 and x240.
If you find a good deal you can get one of them easily for under 500 bucks.
There is also the HP 2740p and 2760p.
You could also go for a Latitude XT3.
Also for under 500 bucks if you find a good deal.
Look into them and get one of those. The days of the x200 are counted.

Are they necessary? No, any university should have tons of computers available in libraries and residence halls. But if you want the freedom to work wherever you want, you'll need a laptop.
Virtually everything will likely require computers in some capacity along the way. It doesn't need to be fancy. But really there's not much excuse to not get a computer of some kind. It doesn't even need to be good. Just a couple hundred bucks will do, install Linux and you're set.

a laptop is nice for taking to some place with free wifi to do research for papers and shit like that so you don't have to depend on there being a free computer in the library/computer lab
