Extreme poorfag here, what's the best (used) laptop I could buy for $50 or less? Just need it for writing essays, web browsing and video watching (480p-720p).
>>
raspberry pi with a shitty display and usb keyboard duct-taped together
>>
>>55429507
this.

Any used laptop you get for <$50 is going to be shitter than this. Raspberry pi will do everything you need and it is portable. Just find some piece of shit display to go with it and you're set.

>>55429507
How about $75?
>>
>>55429478

I was trying to sell an Asus EeePC1005HAB with 32GB SSD, 2GB RAM, and Win7 for $50 awhile ago.
>>
>>55429478
X60 or x61 probably in bad cosmetic shape and without hdd. If you already have a laptop hdd is all good.
>>
Used chromebook
>>
>>55429478
>web browsing
>480p-720p video watching
no results found.

You need at least 4GB RAM and a decent CPU+GPU(1st gen i3 or i5) for doing that smoothly
>>
>>55429478
Go to eBay.com for low prices on laptops
>>
>>55430080
Probably the only real answer
>>
Get another job, save up, and buy yourself a 13" Retina Macbook Pro, faggot
>>
Troll Craigslist in your area. Look for laptops that are $50. Pick the best one you can afford. Boom answered your own question.
>>
got an X200 for 30 bucks in an online auction, and didn't really have to lurk for long to get it at this price.

works well, but i do have a 500 gb ssd on it, so ymmv

craigslist, ebay
really, save up a bit more, you can get a much more reasonable and useful machine at about $100 used than at $50
it'll still be shit, but it'll be a laptop

>>55429507
I looked into this. To get something approaching a decent, useful display (you know, 800x600 or better, my standards are rock bottom here), you're already spending more than $50.
then you have a $10 keyboard, $5 mouse, and $35 raspi, all prices ignoring shipping (you're buying all this shit shipped free from China, right?)

it's over $100 in all -- it's cheaper than any new laptop, but more expensive than just getting a refurbished or used machine with like 10x the power
you could look into futzing around with old laptop screens, although you'll probably end up needing a $20 interface board

there's also the issue of powering all of this (you could run the Pi off of a $20 USB powerbank for a decent bit of time if you needed actual portability)

Either an EEpc or shitty x86 SoC.
Don't go for the ARM SoC memes.

a Dell Mini 9 is tiny and has a fairly strange keyboard, but it's $50 (on ebay), gets 3-5 hours of battery, and will last basically forever because there's no moving parts and the hinge is thicc
>>
>>55429478
a chinese tablet with a x86 processor. because why would you want a cheap laptop in the first place?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/282090445350?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

but you'll be pushing it with 720p...
>>

It's $60 plus shipping, but N550 is dual core and can handle 720p.
>>
Is OP still here?

A ThinkPad X61 running Linux will do that. Check eBay.
>>
>>55429478
It's not hard to go mow someone's lawn or get by molested on craigslist for an hour. You'd literally double your net worth.
>>
get a kickass T60 or X200.

Thinkpad T60 (though most in the $50 range on ebay seem to not have a HDD so that'll probably be an extra $10 separately).

Alternatively just go to the library for your computing until you save up enough to get one of the intel chromebooks.

Idk if these links are against the rules but loo at that. Not 50 but cheap.

dumbass consumer.

Flash and any browser based video player is so bloated. If you use a plugin to use VLC or whatever as an embedded player in the browser, you can definitely get that extra power. If this was your make-or-break, you can get away with this on a C2D.

I still have my thinkpad T60 as my work laptop, it only ever needed to do router adminning and shit that doesn't require graphics, it was put together for $100 complete with SSD and battery in 2012 and the price on all this has fallen hard, everything has fallen and especially the SSD. Expresscard $10 usb 3.0 card also made a huge difference, not as fast as real 3.0 but certainly 3-4x faster than 2.0. I watch 480p video in the browser no problem.

Just FYI, if you are using any online tool for school they sometimes require you to have a modern laptop even though it isn't needed, good idea to make sure on that before you get a great $50 laptop that would do the job but isn't allowed no matter what which means you would have wasted the money. Just remember no matter what you need to get a business laptop, consumer class are scams designed to be timebombs that never last more than 3 years
>>
>>55429478
Best bet is a used 2008 era netbook, they are everywhere and practically given away. Note you will have extreme problems just trying to play Youtube videos and will have to resort to playing them in VLC.
>>
>>55430083
you only need a new celeron for that. It will go up to 1080p easily
>>
Check craigslist for shitty displays and prebuilts
