Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

What software can I use to control another computer remotely? Mainly to check that the temps are fine, turn it off, make it download and seed torrents. I'm willing to install any distro or even BSD, and I don't care if the tool doesn't have a GUI (but it would be better if it had one). Both computers would be connected in LAN.

It's a known bug that happens in some dualboot combos. It happens because Linux uses global time and Windows uses some offset somethingsomething. You can either change the Linux setting so it uses somethingsomething as well, or just do ONE of these on Windows:

1.- If you're talking about energy and the money it costs, not that much really.

2.- Some light DEs can improve a laptop's battery duration.

3.- If you're talking about the general usage of resources, yes it can; you can even make the lightest distros run in 20ish years old computers.

Ah, I see we have non-believers in our midst. Well we have special ways of dealing with you. You see, when the soup-thin logic and rhetorical tricks that worked on the other suck- uh I mean cult members is found lacking, we have to use our secret weapon: nagging. Nag nag nag nag nag nag nag nag and nag some more. When the dumb non-believer gets tired of your nagging he will either give in to your demands to make you shut up, or not have enough time to keep up with the nagging (once again, our schedules are very free) and have to concede. Either way we win!

For the Germans among us, I've translated the "open source" and "GNU/Linux" copypastas into German so we can now enlighten non-English speaking people.

Also was ist freie Software?

I tried dual booting Ubuntu once so I could learn what Linux was about.

However, I had this one problem where, after restarting my PC, I would instantly get into Ubuntu. When I was supposed to see the options between Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

To this I concluded two things.

I either fucked the installation up and Installed Ubuntu over the Windows partition.

Or something happened and I dont know what, since I did everything as indicated on your regular dual booting guide (create a partition of X size using X windows utility, boot into the ubuntu cd, etc)

Now I am afraid of trying again. How do I do this right?

Working on installing arch. (We have the ability to start a MATE session! Wew!)

So I'm not sure how else to normally do it (IE, is startx the only way to?) but I had a question about how I made it work.

I edited the xinitrc file, and in addition to adding exec mate-session, I also needed to comment out
exec xterm -geometry 80x66 +0+0 -name login

What does this line mean, and why does startx work to start a MATE session when I edit this out?

exec xterm created a basic xterminal -geometry specifies the dimensions of that terminal +0+0 the location and -name login.

If your disk is /dev/sda you make two partitions /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. First install windows in /dev/sda1 as normal, then install Linux in /dev/sda2 but place the loader in /dev/sda (not /dev/sda1 or /dev/sda2, just /dev/sda). You can make other partitions if you want, just don't be retarded.

Then you don't have libinput installed and aren't using its driver.
Do
grep -i "using input driver" .local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log
to find out which driver you're using. If it's a touchpad, then you're using synaptics most likely. Check the Arch Wiki page for that.
You can also ditch the Synaptics driver and go for libinput which is THE FUTURE.

Mnogi kompjuterski korisnici koriste modificiranu verziju GNU sistema svaki dan, bez njihovog znanja.

Slim is deprecated, abandoned and not compatible with systemd.
>>
>>55420993
Damn, well fuck guess I'll have to find something else.
>>
>>55421013

The only viable choices are LightDM and SDDM.
LightDM has the GTK greeter which works flawlessly and a few other minor ones like the WebKit greeter. There were also KDE/Qt greeters, but I think those are deprecated as well.
SDDM is the default greeter for KDE now, but of course works outside of it.
There's also LXDM, but I don't know why anyone would use that over LigthDM with the GTK greeter.
>>
>>55421052
LightDM looks great but I'm on FreeBSD, I'll probably stick with slim until either
a) it breaks everything
or
b) something like lightdm comes to FreeBSD

Because you're an idiot who's comparing RAM usage in ridiculous scenarios. Your browser is open and I doubt you had exactly the same pages open. You also have 4GB of RAM and that's more than enough. Idiots like seeing a lot of RAM being free, while normal people want their RAM to be utilized for caching things to make things more responsive.

I was working on changing my theme to arc (personal favorite of mine) and noticed it required a few things. gnomes-themes-standard and gtk-engine-murrine. So I went ahead and added those. I had a problem I had just reinstalled MATE for a while ago, in which my icons are absolutely borked.

A few of my applications are just flat out missing icons no matter what DEFAULT icon pack I use, and of course when I go to adjust screen brightness, it's missing as well. Anybody have a clue what the hell is up? Been crawling the arch wiki for a while, no solution I can find. Don't really want to remove and reinstall MATE for something this stupid, seems inefficient.

So that leads me to a few questions
Why do I end up with empty icons for system applications for default system apps? I briefly installed Xfce4 to check, and it was a similar thing there.

Why would reinstalling Firefox not at least restore some sense of custom icon? Is this an arch thing or a user thing?

My nvidia GPU runs several degrees hotter in linux for some reason.

I'm using proprietary drivers, and I notice the "performance level" likes to stay around the top level, even if I'm not even doing anything.

I switched from nouveau, because the tearing is slightly not as bad now. Like if I'm scrolling on a browser page, it will tear for a few seconds, and then stop. Is the adaptive performance thing just really dumb and slow to react or something?

Do you guys think NixOS is viable? It's a very different way of handling packages and does some pretty unconventional stuff like completely changing where files are stored.

As an example none of my scripts worked with
>#!/bin/bash
I had to change them to
>#!/usr/bin/env bash

Surprisingly most things seem to be working quite well though, and since the system's setup is completely determined by its single configuration file it feels so clean and seems like it would be an absolutely amazing "user friendly" distro (not right now but when/if it becomes more developed).
In the future people could just post various config files for different types of users and they could just pick one when installing their system and everything would automatically get setup exactly as that person had it with all the dependencies and software and even software specific configuration options, and apparently the way the package manager works makes it impossible for them to run into dependency hell.

But I'm curious what people think about the long term viability of NixOS because it is quite different after all.

Is installing programs really as big of a hassle as people tell you it is? I don't mind the install taking a week to complete, and I guess I'm fine with not being able to add new programs without effort since I'm probably not going to be adding/removing too many programs once I get going.

I'd install Arch just as a more sane option, but I'm not entirely looking for sanity here.

Fresh install of xubuntu.
Two different Nvidia cards. 980 + 780 for hobo CUDA rendering setup.
I installed the proprietary drivers for the 980 from "Additional Drivers", rebooted fine.
Installed the proprietary drivers for the 780, which were a different version for some reason.
Now, X wont start. It hangs at a black screen with blinking cursor. When I switch to a virtual console I can login but X wont start due to "no screens" or some such.
Please advise?
