You can't hide memory modules on a board, 4GB cards only have 4GB worth of memory.
Changing the BIOS to read memory which isn't there isn't going to magically let you fill up nonexistent VRAM.

Setting up two lines of production for two almost identical vga is much muchmore expensicve than the loss.for the four 1gb ram module, this time there is no jewish

Nvidia is doing the same with GTX 1080 AND 1070, and intel has been doing the same for tears
>>

Nowhere in the article did they say that.
The article has a launch 8GB card that could be flashed with a 4GB firmware, which is fucking retarded.
AMDrones being retarded as usual.

It's not though because the .5gb is still faster than the system RAM. If it had to go to system RAM instead it would be much worse.

Also, if you're using that much vram, you're already going to be at an unacceptable framerate regardless.

Same with the 6950, and even now you can recapture that same magic with a Fury, as you can unlock half of them to a higher core count with a BIOS mod, some of them were disabled though because they were binned on purpose, and only a tiny few were destined to be a Fury X, so the chances of unlocking them to a full 4096 are low as fuck, with 3840 being what me and most people ended up with, but that 3840 makes a huge difference, and brings it a little bit above a 980 performance-wise
>>
>>55416645
hold up, so they actually made that card software unlock able? are all the retail 4gb cards like that?
the fucking pajeet madman! i love you!
>>
>>55417571
binning has nothing to do with this
this way there is only one assembly line and procedure to make to physical skus, setting the capabilities via software (like modern oscilloscopes)
>>
>>55417909
Not by design, there's no ACTUAL mod out in the wild yet that lets you do this, Techpowerup will probably have something within a month, as newer GCN-based cards require special dumping and editing tools compared to the 6000 series and under, so it'll call for a lot more work than just flashing a BIOS you modded in ABT

>>

Just like the HD 6950 bios unlock to 6970 with the reference version. Had to put out enough stock so had to gimp cards at software level to meet initial demand. Just watch the AIB cards be physically be 4 or 8 GB memory and lock out this "exploit".

That makes no sense. The slowdown shouldn't hit until 3.5GB.

Up until 3.5GB the card should run at full speed.

If you read the article you'd see that it's probably just for the first batch of 4gb cards to deal with the fact that they didn't have their actual 4gb cards ready to ship yet.

So don't think you can just grab 4gb card in August, flash the BIOS, and have yourself a cheap 8gb card.
>>
>>55419881
nvidia shill's anus is literally devastated
>>
AMD has some kind of problem where they cannot help but give their hardware away for a discount or something.
>>
>>55419918
I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I'm saying that if you want to take advantage of this do it now because the next batch of 4gb cards really will be 4gb cards.

This is actually useful while stock remains low. It means that it doesn't matter what card you run across you will still get an 8gb card.
>>
>>55416645
Why would XFX or any other OEM put 8 1gb memory modules in a card that is sold as 4gb? Are they using chips with questionable stability so they block access to half the memory? Can they just not manufacture the card without installing 8 memory chips?
>>
>>55416645
what the fuck is going on at AMD, it's like they're deliberately gimping themselves and leaving it up to the user to un-gimp the fucking card, why can't they just put this shit out there as is without overvolting and hiding shit
>>
Buy 4gig from Nvidia get 3.5
Buy 4gig from AMD get 8

AMD confirmed for piss poor jews
>>
>>55419982
they probably make fuck all profit at 199 and need the 8gig cards to make a decent margin
>>
>>55419968
I think the board partners have an agreement with AMD to manufacture reference boards exactly as instructed. AMD probably expected more demand on the 8GB boards so they instructed the partners to manufacture more of them and this was a backup plan in case there was lower than expected demand.
>>
>>55420014
>lower than expected demand.
You are not serious, right?
>>
>>55419881

This. Early buyers won the memory lottery. The rest will get 4 gb.

Doesn't change fact that 4 gb is amazing value, better than 8 gb. It might even OC a bit better due to less power draw. The "reverse memorygate" is just icing on cake for the lucky few...
>>
>>55420032
I have no idea what the sales numbers for the cards are like this is a guess. I doubt AMD purposely told them to do this without a good reason. The board partners have little incentive to do this so they probably wouldn't if they had a choice.
>>
Breaking News: AMD cucks new owners in record time.

New owners were presented with a myriad of issues with the launch of the Rx480 graphics card. Issues ranging from the as expected AMD drivers all the way to motherboard killing PCIE power consumption.

Now the die-hard fans who overlooked those issues and decided to buy a card anyways are faced with cuckholdery once more as they could have gotten the same product for $50 less.
>>
>>55420064
>I have no idea what the sales numbers for the cards are like this is a guess.
UK Overclockers sold their first batch of 1k on launch (just like they did the 1080).

>I doubt AMD purposely told them to do this without a good reason.
That would be sensible but a lot about the 480 has made little sense. Claim TDP of 150w but regularly goes over it and possibility of damaging the PCIe slot. Now there are reports that underpowering it actually improves both stability _and_ gets a little better performance in some benchmarks.
>>
This isn't a new thing. I've seen this happen before on nvidia too. They just rebrand a better card as a weaker card to meet supply with all the physical parts of the better card still there.

Old AMD 2 and 3 core processors also had 4 physical cores with only 2 or 3 available for use. The addtional core or cores could easily be enabled in software. Sometimes an Athlon X3 could be unlocked to a full Phenom with the additional cache.

This will probably not stay around for long as supply of actual 4GB cards increases. Assuming the lower capacity memory chips aren't more expensive for some reason. AMD isn't a charity.
