Can't we all get along? The 480 is flawed, true. But won't these issues be fixed in the versions built by other manufacturers? Or is it really impossible to fix it without reworking the whole thing?
As for the gtx 970, i had one, with a 1440p screen and a 1080p screen attached to it. It cannot deliver because of the memory issue. I ended up getting a refund and kept on using my gtx 770. I get better framerates on that, however even that's pretty much at the end of it's rope. I was seriously considering the 480, but i don't want to lose money on another defect. Your answers might just push me to save for a 1070 or 1080 instead.

the first dx 11 game that got my interest was
BattleForge
not because of effects, but because they showed off dx9 dx10 and dx11 side by side and 11 had 30% better performance than 9 for the exact same effects.
dx12 even if it doesn't api specific features should be able to improve its performance over 11, but so far all we have are games that use it as shell to run dx11 through, or are using the api features so there's no good comparison like there was wit battleforge.
the first dx11 only game of note was Battlefield 3 it appears (it appears that dx10 compatibility is granted by dx11)
the first dx11 only game without a backwards compatibility was Crysis 3...
honestly, full support of 11 where games require the use of features that break the backwards compatibility shell are rare. but using a game through dx11 over 10 boosts game performance, much like you see with dx11 to dx12
people with a fully compliant dx12 card get that performance boost, while people who don't get to still play the game.
overall you will see a longer lifetime in your cards that use dx12 right apposed to wrong, how much you are willing to put up with is another matter entirely.

It's not a core design problem, its a PCB design problem, which the Sapphire won't have. They wanted to reuse the PCB for the 460 and 470 which will probably not have an extra power connector. So the card pulls most of it from the PCI instead. This is obviously wrong and is easily fixed by the vendors with their AIB.
