Need to replace my shitty apple airport with something more modern. Ideally I'd like to get something that will work with openwrt. Should I by something Asus or go dlink?
>>
Halp. Shameless bump. Just tell me what you're using and if you Kik it
>>

Would you buy a router that looks like a spider ?
>>
The more antennas a router has the better it is, that is a well known fact. Go for that Asus one, OP.
>>
>>55394713
Whatever you do don't get the one in your picture that just lumps in several 3x3's instead of using modern technology

It's all the same shit.

Seriously though, what is the WRT54GL of the current year?

there isnt one

all modern routers are either:
>shit
>expensive as fuck
>ugly as fuck
>all of the above

Pic related, the last of a functional, reasonably priced and subtle design for routers.
>>
>>55394713 Get ubqt edge router lite and few ac lite's. You could install openwrt on them but it is really dumb idea - you will loose that gorgeous seamless wifi roaming feature.

Apple airport is good though, many shitty ac device were shared with n bandwidth, how much money are u gonna spend for router op?
>>
>>55397449

T-mobile cells a 'CellSpot' router that's just a rebadged Asus for half the price of the original model. The only difference is that it has a different firmware that has QoS for t-mobile wi-fi calling on by default. But you can buy it even if you don't have a t-mobile account and just use it as a normal router.

>Should I by something Asus

Just the other day, I came across a post by a guy having trouble with a pair of Asus wireless routers.

Turns out Asus had cloned the same MAC address to both. If that's some kind of standard practice, I'd question their competency.

Ya done goofed. Maybe in a year or two the dd-wrt firmware will be good for it but the stock firmware sucks ass and they have basically given up on trying to fix it. The best open wrt firmware out right now only works on the 5ghz spectrum.
I have its little brother and its a mess.

if price is no option the Asus ones are solid. They have OpenVPN stuff built into the firmware so no need for DDWRT.
>>
>>55402988

>>
Can someone explain to me why would you need Openwrt?
>>
>>55405504
more control of the router, basicly custom firmwares can make normal routers act as enterprise ones to some degree.
>>
>>55394713
Asus is better imo
>>
>>55405504 It could run shadowsocks, which is faster and cant be easily blocked like openvpn.
>>
>>55405863
>>55406020
Should I do it for my Archer c9? I don't really need vpn or something like that
>>
>>55406181
Your router wont become faster or anything. One reason to do it is to fix crappy factory firmware (like xiaomi meme router), another is to add extra features (usb disks/printers/webcam/audio, torrent, airplay, tor, pbx, radius, proxy, adblock, webserver, owncloud, timemachne backup, snort, uam). Just keep in mind that routers hardware is crap and it will work pretty slow.

>Buying any "Linksys" router after the WRT54G series
Enjoy your overpriced but shit tier Belkin box
>>
>>55406181
if the router works, no, if its fucked, why not.

>>55406364
you get some control over power to antennas so you can increase range, depending on how bad the routers stock firmware is it may increase performance a bit, not god's gift to routers level, but higher than normal at least.

personally, if you are looking for a new router, edge routerX and a wifi access point is i believe the best option, though i don't like the router has a very high reliance on cli for anything and the ui is lip service at best.

>shitty airport extreme
unless you have like 5 devices going at the same time there's nothing better than the airport extreme if you want speed and range.
everything else has followed AMDs more cores = more better strategy and don't give a shit about overhead which is why the airport extreme is one of the fastest wireless APs for actual use.
>>
>>55397665
