I have used arch for years and it only broke when I went fucking around and changing things. Osx on the other hand WS a shit load of workarounds to mount exfat drives, and show hidden files
>>
>>55394455
exFAT has been supported natively since late 2010.

Showing hidden files in the Finder is just a matter of modifying a single setting via the defaults program.

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

killall Finder

And you can change it back by just replacing the "YES" for a "NO" and running the same commands.

KDE is more advanced than this. KDE has a toggle right there, and it remembers the setting for each folder. So you can have "show hidden files" in a parent folder, and subfolders won't show hidden files if you don't want them to. You can also say "for all subfolders" and it'll do it for the subfolders without further interaction.

This is why I use Linux. Because Windows and OSX are fucking /crippled/

This is hilarious.

Atom or Sublime for text editing on OS X?

Atom should never be viewed as an option.

sublime!
atom is not bad and very_configurable,
but sublime is way faster and also very_configurable.
OTOH i use vim a lot for quick stuff and intellij for lots of code
>>
>>55398048
Atom is absolutely disgusting. Sublime all the way. Coda and other osx-specific solutions are ok.
Or just use vim lul

Sublime or Textmate 2. Atom is only ok if you think it's ok for your text editor to consume 400MB of RAM by creating a new text file and typing "hi".

>Windows scaling
Never again. I used to bootcamp on this thing for muh gaymes, but I built a real gaming computer and uninstalled Windows from this. A lot of applications became straight up unusable because you couldn't click all the buttons since Windows fucked up how they were displayed at 2880x1800.
>>
>>55398382
I've not had that problem (scaling 3840x2160 to 2560x1440 or 1920x1080)

Only time I ever had problems is some games don't go fullscreen correctly unless you disable DPI scaling for them.

Rarely, a program just looks like shit but you can disable DPI scaling for it (speccy is the only program I've done this for)
>>
>>55398436
But what was your screen size? The Amnesia games did not work at all for me because of the menus until I turned off scaling.

Right, like I said games are a very real problem. Especially idtech games - gotta turn off scaling or they take up half the screen or do stupid shit in general.

Quake Live I could play at 4k but since my display was scaled down it only showed like half of the game until I turned off scaling for it.

I don't play games very often, just agreeing that Windows DPI scaling does mess up games but for the most part it's fine otherwise.

Sometimes get weird bugs coming out of a game in explorer windows where they will be half scaled and half unscaled. Minimizing/restoring fixes it.

>>
>>55399616
It'll be like every other software UI redesign Apple has done: First get the fundamentals right, then incrementally add back the missing features.
>>
>>55399669
But they had the fundamentals right. Disk Utility's been fine for years and then out of nowhere they took a shit on it.
>>
>>55398330
What's wrong with Windows' DPI scaling?

Is it really worth the $1,000 - $2,000 for a computer that will be obsolete (and probably have some parts needing fixed or replaced) in a couple years?

Thinking about buying one because I liked using them at school, but I don't want to be like the people that waste money on a new iPhone every couple of years. I want something that will last and be useful for at least five years.
>>
Will APFS eventually be able to work on startup disks? I don't see the point of the new file system without this feature.
>>
>>55399746
>Is it really worth the $1,000 - $2,000 for a computer that will be obsolete (and probably have some parts needing fixed or replaced) in a couple years?
None of that is true. My 3 year old MacBook Pro is pristine and still fast as ever. People are still using Mac Pros from 10 years ago. People are even still using PowerMac G5s (probably even more would be if Apple didn't shit on them with Snow Leopard).
>>
>>55399747
Pretty sure its intent is startup disks, it's just not ready for it yet.
>>
>>55399747
It's a beta, that's why they won't let you use it for a boot drive.
>>
>>55399684
It wasn't the most newb friendly UI. For instance to a layman the difference between erasing and partitioning isn't particularly clear in the old version of Disk Utility.
>>
>>55399763
Coolio. I just remember a couple friends and classmates having to send their computers to Apple so they could replace wifi cards or other parts because they stopped functioning and I guess it's too hard to do that yourself for some reason.

Doesn't really matter, I'll just get the warranty/customer care thing.
>>
>>55399747
APFS will totally replace HFS+ next year. They're also ensuring a seamless, painless conversion process.

I don't know why they'd do that, it's not really common for those to fail on any machine.

The only thing is that the RAM is not upgradeable, so make sure you get how much you need.
