There's only two AMOLED tablets, the S2 I mentioned and the first gen Tab S, that one's in 16:9 ratio though, but over everything else I won't really get anything else that doesn't have AMOLED, it just shits over everything else especially if you're watching videos or as you mentioned, reading stuff.
The Tab S has been out for a while already so it should be cheap and the processor and memory is more than enough even now.

I have the original Nvidia Shield Tablet. So far, I love it. They do not sell it anymore, but you can get the Shield K1 (same tablet minus the stylus) for $199. Great for reading, browsing and playing games.

I've got the Note 2014, and this device definitely needs the stock rom to work to the fullest. I'd just root it, now I see no ads ever and I can pretty much make every app available in the split screen tray.
Pretty useful as reference guide, especially since the long screen allows two square apps at the same time; 4:3 devices just doesn't cut it.
Of course that pen is epic too, I've ordered the full sized wacom stylus for this and the experience just got better. There's so many things that the styli can do that I wonder what the fuck is everyone doing not copying this feature right away. Even then the stylus experience on other devices are mostly restricted to just being a glorified pressure sensitive pointer.

The perk of it has a 16:10 screen that is godly to read on and watch my Taiwanese anime and manga. And it has basically the updates of a Nexus.
