It's PSR-compliant in PHP, apparently. I do it that way for work, but outside of work or when using any other C-like language, opening brace goes on the same line

It doesn't bother me nearly as much as some of the other stupid shit people do, like formatting blocks like this in Ruby:

something = { one:       "one",
two: "two",
three: "three",
seventeen: "seventeen" }

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What youโ€™re referring to as Lunix, is in fact, GANOO/Lunix, or as Iโ€™ve recently taken to calling it, GANOO plus Lunix. Lunix is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GANOO system made useful by the GANOO corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by XENIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GANOO system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GANOO which is widely used today is often called โ€œLunixโ€, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GANOO system, developed by the GANOO Project. There really is a Lunix, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Lunix is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machineโ€™s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Lunix is normally used in combination with the GANOO operating system: the whole system is basically GANOO with Lunix added, or GANOO/Lunix. All the so-called โ€œLunixโ€ distributions are really distributions of GANOO/Lunix.

An opening brace is a separate statement from the if statement. It should occupy its own line. It 's prettier because it's on the same column as the closing brace. It increases readability by spacing out the conditional and the statements that depend on it. Most importantly: It helps debugging when there's a problem with missing/extra braces or crossed wrappers.

'5' is a string that is being interpreted as a number in one situation but not in the other.
>>
>>55392770
'5' is basically the char of 5, but javascript does weird auto-typing shit when you try to use math on what you might consider a char.

In the first case, it assumes you want the code point representation of '5', or 50. In the second, it assumes you're trying to do math with '5' as literally 5.
>>
>>55392822
>>55392842
this is absolute fucking shit. I never used javascript before. Please tell me there are standard conversion methods between chars/strings and numbers.

>>

It happens because + is both a math operator and the "join text" operator.

you have to do parseInt() if you want your text to be interpreted as numbers.

I think I get it. With that approach, you can concatenate numbers to make a date and, if you start from numbers that would have made 00-01-01 and subtract one to either the month or the day, you'll get an accurate date.

I'm not sure what it does with negative numbers though.
>>
>>55392873
I understand types. I was a bit thrown off by her using ` and ยด instead of ' '. And nobody should be presumed to know the stupid intricacies of implied type conversions in scripting languages that force the use of mixed type variables.
>>
>>55386304
>'s PSR-compliant in PHP
PHP is an awful toylang and was made by a tech illiterate idiot, and PSR, by association, is also awful.

People format codeblocks like that due to being influenced by LISP and it's typical indentation I'd assume. I don't really have any issue with that. If you're bitching about people using indentation to match up the values in the key-value pairs though, I hope you get hit by a truck. There is literally nothing wrong with make sure your code lines up vertically and is readable.

I can understand why you'd be put off by LISP-esque indents though. They weirded me out until I got used to them too.

With '5' + 3, you concatenate strings. It comes first in the order of operations before add-numbers, so JS assumes '5' is meant to be a string, but '3' also needs to be a string. If you're writing things like '5' + 3 in your code and you aren't actually trying to get that outcome, it's your fault that your shit is weird.

There is literally nothing wrong with a language allowing you to obfuscate your damn code either. Why is 'lol! look at this silly Ruby code!' a reason to dislike Ruby? Instead, you should dislike it for it's obsessive OOP faggotry.

Personally though, I don't really like JS or Ruby. It's just that this is a really shitty example of an issue in them.

On another note, why is 'Plankalkul' being used as a punchline? Because it has a German name so it sounds silly?

For me it all ultimately depends on what is more readable, so I'm OK with this kind of structure in very certain situations. Like for example when having highly repetitive and similar expressions lined up after each other.

I'd rather have:
void Func(int& i) { i = 0;};

than:
void Func(int& i)
{
i = 0;
};

if repeated, let's say 20 times.
