So why is everyone saying this card is bad? I looked up some benchmarks and reviews and it looks fantastic for the price.

Same price as the GTX 970 but

>DX12 support

Are all these anti-amd threads paid shills or something, because the card looks fine.

Costs more than aftermarket 970 for reference 480, they trade blows in performance, can't overclock as well as the 970, shit reference cooler and non reference cards will cost even more.

The 970 is more expensive than the 480 in the USA.

Cheapest 970 new on newegg is $265
4 gig 480 is $200. 8 gig 480 is $240-$250 on newegg.

At this point a 970 is only worth it if you can't wait for stock to come in on the 480.

AMD can't afford to increase the price, the 480 barely outclassed the two years old, old generations 28nm process GTX 970 both on power efficiency and performance.

I know this is probably a stupid idea, but bear with me:

Is there any reason why using a 6 pin to 8 pin PCIE adapter with the 480 card won't work? If it works it will allow the 480 to draw all 150W from the 8 pin slot instead of taking from the motherboard. .

Because the card is not designed to draw that much from the 6 pin? You can draw 200W from the 6pin without any stupid adapter if you want. In fact you're better off without one.

The card just doesn't. By design. It's actually very common for cards to draw like ~100W from a 6 pin.
>>
Needs a better cooler. It's great for the price at face value but it's shortcomings prevent it from being 970 OC tier. The potential fuck up will come down to the AIB releases and their price points which will either be good or a disappointment based on price and OC potential with proper cooler. Just watch AMD fuck this with the "RX 490" release having a closed loop liquid cooler like the Fury series, touting "overclockers dream" and it's OC'd out of the box 10% over 480 and has next to no head room because of the yields not allowing past 15% 480 performance [and it's going to cost $349 minimum killing value].
>>
>>55368548

Sapphire is gonna fix the reference model by adding a 8 pin and better cooling.

I'd rather wait for their Nitro model, though.

My 660 ti is still OK for playing Overwatch at 1080. I might even wait next year for Vega or the 1080 ti.

You don't seem to realize that most people who this card is targeted at will have similar hardware. Probably really shitty bargain bin motherboards with ancient amd cpu or even $100 prebuilts which will use some shitty Korean knockoff motherboards to keep costs down. Most people who buy this card will have the same problem. No one buys a z170 $150 mobo and a 6700k only to pair it with a budget 480.

If it was me, i would return it and get my money back just to be safe.

But now i will explain why, the ones selling right now (and the one you bought) are reference cards, meaning under the brand name they are all exactly the same shit (and even the same cooling system), the same cards that went to all those reviewers that all gave the same note: Power Issues.

And to be honest it's actually something dumb, a design error that make the card fail the PCI-E specification, in other words the PCI-E is rated for 75w with 8% tolerance (so anything over 80w is over the specification) in the motherboard slot and this reference card eats 82~86w average, so you're playing russian roulette on your motherboard PCI-E slot getting fried (and taking the entire mobo or even something else with it).

Notice the other problem is the ATX spec violation, and what those faggots bitch with the 960, the 6-pin is also rated for 75w but it can go way over it (depending on PSU quality, and if yours is a really shitty one it could potentially melt the cables), but again one thing is melting a cable and other is melting a motherboard slot.

tl;dr: Reference Rx 480 reviews reported for power problem, some guys complain it melted their motherboards (bricking it or just killing the PCI-E slot), problem is "supposed" to be fixed in custom boards (add of 8-pin instead of 6-pin), with that doubt it would be better to pull away and wait for custom cards (if they fix said issue or at least no one else report it). If safe, then buy again a 480 (custom) or see what nvidia offer, whatever keep more money in your wallet.
>>
>>55370856
Haven't you been told to go back to /v/ yet nvidia shill?
>>>/v/
>>
>>55365857
I think most of the disappointment is from people irrationally feeling let down because it didn't live up to their unreasonable expectations. Prior to launch, there were idiots expecting AMD to deliver a card that performed like a 1070 while costing $200. Nevermind the fact that AMD is struggling to stay financially solvent, thus limiting their R&D, or the fact that this hypothetical dream card would have to have a much higher price tag. Then there's the fact that they all ignored the obvious: the part number indicated that it was a replacement for AMD's 380 mainstream card, the tiny die size, and the fact that AMD continuously said that this card was being produced for the mass market.

The reality is that AMD has brought a card that is enormously more powerful than anything else in its price range, and as fast as the previous generation's $400 parts, while keeping overall power within 150W, which is about the limit of what most OEM systems can handle in stock configurations. That makes it a solid product and a hell of a deal.

The only legitimate complaint that any sane person should have is the PCI-E power issue, which effectively makes this card non-viable for the intended market, since the people who would most likely buy this card would be least likely to have a robust system that could cope with it. I expect this to be fixed or rendered moot with the custom designed boards that should be showing up soon, but AMD should have planned better than this.

If your shit reference card is a live beta test that can potentially burn a fucking motherboard that's enough reason to not buy it now, if the problem is fixed then do whatever the fuck you want with your money, that doesn't mean to buy nvidia or even a 3dfx voodoo 9999 from a fucking parallel universe, just get whatever make the best performance with the lesser risk of malfunction.
>>
>>55370892
>and as fast as the previous generation's $400 parts

>while keeping overall power within 150W
Actually exceeds it.

It's basically a 970 2 years later, except with a lower price tag (and non-gimped vram). The card is good for the price, and at the moment there is no other card in the price range worth buying, but if you ignore the price tag, it's not a very good product.
