Apple had it figured out fine on OS X (just disable gatekeeper), but since "phones aren't computers" they pulled the wool over the publics eyes and demanded that everyone who dare run anything not explicitly approved by apple buy a mac and a dev license.
Sadly, stock android only lets you have that freedom if you use a language that makes objective C look good. So I'm not sure if it's actually better.

Beats definitely had downsides for their image but I'd say the avoided the worst by presenting it as a separate brand and not something like "Apple Beats by Dre" or some shit.
No idea about the image of Tidal beyond JAY Z and EXCLUSIVES but given the nature of it, they could just absorb the company completely in Apple Music. Whether it's a good idea or not, simply depends on the price. After a quick googling it seems to be valued at 250 million, so it would be barely noticeable costs for Apple either way.
