Where do I begin if I want to truly understand how to Linux, /g/?
most I can do is copypaste commands in the oogaboogabuntu terminal

What do you actually mean by "learn Linux"? Chances are that doesn't mean what you think it means.
>>55359935
Learn to use it and how it works, mostly
>>55359924
Install Gentoo.
No, seriously. You will learn a ton
>>55359924
Install something like debian,gentoo,fedora etc
Take it in small steps by doing stuff that interests you. You can learn alot by setting up a home fileserver for example.
Even just configuring your own laptop could be a great learning experience.
So i guess my suggestion is to learn by completing a certain task and then move on to another task.
git gud.
lurk unix.stackexchange
use a virtual machine.
How do I understand how the file system and terminal work?
>>55359960
Learn to use what, exactly? Do you know what Linux is?
>>55360429
install gentoo
Seriously, try to install it with the official guide. Or at least Arch with its own wiki.

actually installing gentoo. It's a total meme but if you want to get elbows deep in the linux taint then it's the best way to go about it. Set aside a day and a computer (preferrably with a laptop also so you can reference online resources) and just get it going.

Alternatively, open up your terminal right now.
type ls. This lists all the stuff in your current directory
type cd and then the name of a folder. This will Change your Directory to the one you specifiy. Also you can use cd .. to move up a directory. The directory above you is always considered to be called ".."
After that go do this :

How do I know where programs are installed? This filesystem is pretty confusing desu

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

just read books and actually try things out as you go along.
Ubuntu is perfect for learning. Just download a few Linux books and start copy pasting terminal commands until you git gud.
>>55360805

git: 'gud.' is not a git command. See 'git --help'.
Play around with it, go deeper than you would normally and don't be afraid to piss things up
>>55360566
NixOS does not have this problem
OS X sorta doesn't have this problem too
