Is it a good idea to buy a refurbished laptop from eBay? I'd be using it mostly for schoolwork.
i bought a chinkpad and it came with literally one scratch on the side and the edges worn off. id say go for it

Yes buy refurbished. Especially if it's a thinkpad since they're very easy to service. I've bought 2 and they both came great, specs and build well above any store-bought laptop for that price (around 200$ for an i5, 8GB DDR3, 1400x900). Make sure you buy the version with decent resolution and aim for the T410 if you want a good keyboard.
