I like the hard drive setup. I plan on doing the same thing. Windows SSD, Linux SSD, shared 1-2TB. Can't go wrong.

What did you think you would need two 8 core xeons for? They're great for rendering or encoding, but they're wasted on gaming
>>

I got a really good deal on it, so I figured why not. I want to sell it, but it's old so probably not worth it.

Ive been thinking of upgrading. What do you guys think of this build?

I already have an SSD and Ill be waiting for that for gtx 1070 to drop to around $400 before i buy. So it will be around $1300 total when i buy hopefully
>>
>>55357058
The motherboard is probably worth the most dual socket boards go for a nice price still. Could probably finance most of a quad core skylake build honestly.
>>
>>55357113
It's a proprietary Dell board, so I think it's pretty much worthless. Oh well, I'll probably keep it and see if I can make good use of the power.
>>
>>55357185
You could still probably sell it to someone on ebay for a few hundred bucks
>>
Upgrading soon. Was holding out for the 480 but it looks like I'll just be grabbing a used 970/980.
>>
>>55357265
How are you still on a c2q? I upgraded from my Q6600 last year to a 5820k and the difference was drastic.

>tfw completely skipped over the DDR3 generation.
>>
>>55357286
Too Jewish to upgrade because this is the first year I haven't been a poorfag. I actually just got this C2Q like 2 years ago from a guy who recycles old workstations. I had an 8800GT but it needs new thermal tape so it gets way too hot to use now.

I can't spend the money to upgrade since I'm saving to move but I'm hoping to at least get a new GPU before the end of the year since replacing the CPU involves new board and new memory as well.

Recently transitioned to ITX since I'm moving a couple hundred miles to University soon, I'd prefer to carrying my Define R4.

I miss 16GB RAM tho, definitely feeling the effects. My ITX board only has two slots, but I don't want to throw anymore money at this build, just after buying a H55 watercooler so my CPU doesn't thermal throttle like it did using the stock cooler.

Hopefully my CPU can last another 2 years comfortably.

TL;DR: Don't get ITX

It's hooked up to an old sandy bridge box with 44 TB storage that I use as a NAS.

I'm gaming at 1080p144hz, so I don't know whether to go with a single 1070, 1080, sli, or just staying with my current setup, as it's working pretty amazing for what I play atm.

Current RAM is quad-channel 32GB 3200MHz DDR4(4x8GB). And I have the 5820k at 4.5GHz right now.

Will be getting one of those non-housefire rx 480 models once they release or a gtx 1060 depending on it's price.
I wonder if my Silverstone 500w PSU is powerful enough? TDP on my current card

You could run a GTX 1080 on that 500w card assuming your 8350 is under 5GHz.

It's a 180w card, you can run it on an sff 400w PSU with a 6700k(95w tdp).

180+95= 275w.
Assume another 25-75w for RAM, SSD/HDD, fans, lighting, peripherals, etc. That will depend exactly what you have installed, but should easily be under 75w.

That's ~350w max power draw assuming you don't OC something. And your idle power draw will be significantly lower, under 100w.
>>
>>55359395
won't the 8350 bottleneck a 1080?

I've no interest in overclocking, hence the non-K CPU and basic motherboard.

>>
>>55359571
Yea but that wasn't the question, a GTX 970 can be bottle necked by an 8350. The single core performance on AMD is simply lacking, even at 5GHz it's still 30% slower than a current Intel.
>>
>>55359717
Building it myself was the original plan, but at this price -- lower than I was able to put the parts together myself -- I figured I'd pull the trigger and let someone else do it.
>>
>>55359736

I have a microcenter nearby, i paid $290 for the 5820k.

Also less "support" what support is needed? Its a fucking CPU, either it works or it doesn't, and since it's identical silicon to Haswell-EP server CPUs, it has identical support besides for ECC, which I believe it technically has the hardware for it just has it disabled.

The fucko conclusion. Fastest Intel Broadwell chip can bottleneck GTX970 in...every game that doesnt thread nicely, but eats every IPC available. Examples: OFP, Armed Assault, Arma2, GTA4, GTA5, SHOC (+CoP and the leaked source code offsprings, like the LA and CoC) when lots of items are activated, UT2003/2004 with lots of bots.

I look like an AMD shill but I got a good deal on the 8350 a few years ago. It's still a solid cpu though, definitely good if you can get it on the cheap.

I should probably buy some more ram but I don't think I need another 8gb yet.

Love the Rx 480. I know there are a lot of nvidia shills shitting on it here but I love the card, it's a huge improvement over my 7950 and I can finally drive games at 1440p without setting everything on low.
>>
>>55361681
It's you or some other anon with 5820k (and X99 sb) that wrote this platform having less support than 'consumer' Intel cpu's and server Xeons.

Sometimes CPU works with previous generation (cpu) code in the linux kernel, sometimes it doesnt. SB didnt work straight away, as didnt Skylake.
>>
>>55361791
But more often its the southbridge thats giving problems.

>I have a microcenter nearby

>>
>>55361791
Linux support is another matter, the X99 chipset doesn't always play nice with Linux, though some motherboards do fine, it really depends on hardware choice.

How can a CPU bottleneck a GPU?
>>
>>55361971
There are plenty of games that can be bottlenecked by a CPU, generally they are heavily physics based games, or games with lots of AI, or similar CPU heavy processing that simply can't be easily offloaded to the GPU, at least not with current APIs.
