Companies just like to get their shekels out of us, because they know we're generally not going to bother buying from overseas to save $50.
When it comes to big-ticket items though, it can be worth it. A motorbike that's like $25,000 in America might be $5,000 more here, and it only costs about $2k to ship it from America, so you can save yourself $3k by importing it.

Like, the average burden of tax in Australia is something like ~22% of gross earnings compared with America's ~20%. Not the exact figure, but there's not much difference.
Having said that, we do have things we refer to as 'sin taxes' which actually are extremely high and broad-ranging, like taxes on alcohol and especially cigarettes. >60% of the price of the tobacco people buy is government tax.
