I put 'Jul 2016' in the box, gets turned into '1.7.2016'
I put '001' in the box, gets turned into '1'
Someone please help me before I smash my computer with a hammer

Libreoffice has more development than openoffice and works much better, use that instead, Libreoffice is literally gonna replace Openoffice pretty soon.

First, use libreoffice
Second, use fucking Google
Third, OOs/LO is designed to work just like Excel. Solutions working for Excel, especially Excel 2003 or older will work for OOs/LO.

Same thing happens in Excel.
The problem: you have the cell formatted as 'General'
The solution: you change the cell formatting to 'Text'
Or alternatively, you edit the number/date format if you still want to use them as that data type.
For the alternative, the number format would be something like '00#' and the date 'MM YYYY'
