1) Will installing a game to an SSD improve performance if the OS is installed on an HDD? If not, could you please explain why?

2) How can I set a specific frame as the preview thumbnail in a video file using ffmpeg?
>>
>>55350428
An SSD won't improve performance on its own unless the game is performance limited by texture loading speed or something, which is not common.

You just need to make the first frame of the video the one you want as the preview.

Lucky me:
http://obduction.com/468-2/
>The one area that makes a huge difference with the game, and isn’t necessarily reflected in the system specs is hard drive/ system storage speed. We do a *lot* of streaming from the drive during gameplay, and slower drives have a terrible time keeping up. A generic traditional mechanical hard drive is going to see a lot of hitching and pausing during the game while it loads in. Outside of a video card, upgrading your drive to a solid-state drive if you haven’t yet will make a huge impact in how smooth of an experience you’ll have with the game, along with being a very nice and very noticeable upgrade for your machine in general.

>>
>>55350616
The motherboard is drawing more current than the 20 pin connector is designed to carry, the hardware is probably fine but you can see its starting to melt the plastic. You should at least stop using that PSU with that motherboard.

PCI devices display a vendor and ID in the form of two hex codes. My best guess is that windows has marked down your card for some reason and is throwing a bitch fit that you changed it. If you have live media, repair should help since it'll rescan your shit and fix broken driver calls.

make sure you've installed the complete framework. If you google that error message there's a good deal of info on it - I had the same issue on Linux Mint and I solved it by installing 'mono-complete'.

You might also want to try .NET Core with VS Code - it's Macroshit's official cross-platform open source C# framework and IDE. I don't know a lot about arch but it worked for me on Linux Mint without issue.

wasn't aware other thread hit bump limit.

so I have pic related (Gigabyte 7970). is there some reason I can't connect something to the DVI port as well as one of the miniDP ports? I'm not trying to use eyefinity or anything, just had a third monitor lying around and I figured I'd at least put it to use. main screen (26" Vizio, 1920x1080) is running HDMI, Second screen is some HP branded monitor (1280x1024), which is using the DVI. third screen is an older gateway LCD (1024x768) plugged into the MiniDP via a DVI-to-MiniDP adapter. all three monitors are confirmed working, including through the adapter, so I'm not sure what the issue is here. windows DETECTS the third monitor, but whenever I try to extend the display I get "Unable to save display settings".

google's not turning up anything relevant to me.

Nvidia aside, why would you knowingly buy a faulty GPU? I can't comprehend it

Get a 6100, basically no difference in gaymes.

Is there a conspiracy?

>>

3.5 is more than enough, don't listen to this retard. The 970 is a good GPU.
>>
>>55350067
>>
>>55352588
I'm not saying 3.5GB is too little or too much. I just don't get why anybody would purchase an undeniably faulty card. Good enough or not, you could buy a card that actually functions as intended instead and I fail to comprehend why you wouldn't.

Use your BIOS to overclock. Look at the manual of your motherboard it will talk about it . If you don't have the manual you can download a PDF of the manual from the website of the mobo brand . I don't recommend software overclocking software
>>
>>55352559
It is decent, but there's a glaring flaw in its design. Basically, only 3.5GB of the 4GB of VRAM operates at the advertised speed. The remaining .5GB runs extremely slowly and causes horrible performance when it gets used because that speed becomes the bottleneck. That's why it can run GTA V at 1920x1080 at 60 FPS easily but at 1920x1200 it struggles to clear 20 FPS.
>>
>>55352613
You still haven't explained to me how it's a faulty card.

Anyone here who uses an anti-insect lamp?

How effective is it? Does it even work at all?

I had to move to the countryside for the summer and it's just fucking unbearable. Either I keep my window closed at night and get fried, or keep it open and let all the flies molest my computer screen.

I already have a net on the window, but of course those cunts still get through it somehow.

I'm thinking of buying something like pic related. All I want at this point is to distract them from my computer screen, so as long as they keep flying around that, they can live.

Could this work or is it yet annuda scam?
>>
>>55352656
thanks lad.

The CPU stock speed is 3.8Ghz.

I tried 4.4Ghz and the system crashed within seconds. I went for 4.2 and It's stable.

I'm stressing the CPU with cpu-z to see if the temps go too high. Been doing it for ~10 minutes and temps won't go over 54°C so I guess I'm good.

Yes, I understand that, but you have basically nothing to gain from any of the choices I called into question. The aftermarket CPU cooler is entirely pointless. The 16GB of RAM will offer no boon over 8GB unless you are working with extremely large spreadsheets, 1000 Chrome tabs, VMs, or audiovisual content editing. The WD Black 1TB is only a sidegrade if your PC will be vibrating quite a bit and a downgrade that costs more in your situation. There is no video card that you could logically put into that build that would draw over 400 watts to justify that PSU. The exact same mouse pad is cheaper at OPC than Newegg.
Which calls into question why you might have made those choices, "For what purpose?" if you will.

>>
>>55353581
>Would 500W be ok?
Eh, maybe not. Some of the more power intensive GPUs would draw too hard. If you're thinking about the RX 460/470/480 or GTX 1060 it'll be fine though. Otherwise I'd say 650W, preferably fully modular if you can. It'll make the build a lot easier and cable management won't be a total nightmare. Be sure to check reviews so you don't get a lemon. Bad PSUs can overload your entire PC, really bad PSUs can catch on fire.

Case: Cooler Master Elite 110
CPU: i5 6500
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 Mini OC
MOBO: Asus H110I-PLUS
RAM: 8GB (4+4 kit) Crucial DDR4, 2133MHz
PSU: 450 Watt be quiet! System Power B8
SSD: Kingson SSDNow 240GB

Now I have a few choices of CPU coolers.

The cheapest one would be the Arctic Cooling 11 LP, I have bought Arctic Cooling three times before and am satisfied with my purchases, the price of it being 12€ it would also mean there is a bit more money for other components.

The one I would want the most is the be quiet! Shadow Rock LP, it is not so expensive and has the best sound and temps. However, Cooler Master says the CPU cooler clearance with an ATX power supply in the case is 76mm. The problem is that the Shadow Rock LP is 75.4, my question is if this thing will have almost no airflow or will it be okay?

Now the most expensive choice would be the Noctua NH-L9i, but it's 40€ and I don't know if the cooling capacity is so much grater to consider it, over the Arctic 11 LP.

If you have any experience with either cooler in a very small PC case please share your experience.

If you plan on being a power user, get 16 GB of ram. Not too much more expensive.
>>
Trying to decide between a 750 and 850 Watt PSU.

Is the 850 Watt more "future proof" or should I just stick with the 750? Only thing I could see myself adding would be an extra HDD.
>>
Nexus 5x or Moto G4 Plus:

Which do you believe will be future-proof through 2017? Both seem to be going up to Android O, so it's a tossup.
>>
>>55354118
For just HDD, 750 will be fine. But 850 or more for future-proofing. Especially if you plan on getting a new/2nd GPU.

I'd just go for a 850, but I render shit with Adobe CC so...
>>
>>55354118
A 20 watt PSU should be enough since you're starting with nothing and only going to add one HDD.
>>
>>55354112

It's for my boss, he thought of getting a PS4 for Battlefield 1, but I persuaded him to get a PC, but he did want a very small PC. So I think 8 GB is going to be just fine for a few years.
>>
Why is assigning a variable outside a function bad practice?
>>
>>55354147
I'm just on the fence if it's worth the extra money would be using just one 1080GTX, SSD, a decent soundblaster or ASUS card, and max two large (>3TB) HDD Black Western Digital.
>>
My cloud 2 headset mic is too quiet

I can't boost the volume of it or anything in the options it just won't move up in windows, there's no drivers to download and I updated the firmware

I've tried everything holy shit what is going on why is it so quiet help
>>
>>55353380
>>55353314

Bad advice. For one thing, he forgot to say HIDE the updates. If you don't hide them after you uninstall them, they'll just come right back. Simplest thing to do is install GWX Control Panel. If you're down with registry editing you can disable updating though windows instead with a couple of settings after you install update KB3065987. Either way if you're doing a fresh install of windows 7 you want to manually download and install KB3102810 and KB3138612 or else Windows 7 won't be able to download any updates
>>
>>55354213
I would buy a gtx970 instead (980 if on sale). It is cheap and since he is only using it for gaming, will be more than enough for them. Don't buy into the hype Nvidia creates around its own new cards.

I'm personally using a scrub 760 and can still max out all of my games well beyond 60 FPS. Yet my processor is far beyond average. Might be helping out a bit.

Use a PS calculator site if you want, but it really takes a lot to break 750. Especially if it's silver/gold rated. If you are sure you won't be doing a SLI setup you should be fine. I also wonder why you're going for a soundcard? Does your motherboard have unusually bad output?

It happens. Just remember that DAC stands for digital to analog converter. Meaning that it takes the 1s and 0s and does the work of turning them into an analog electrical pulse that actually does something when it hits the magnets in your speakers or headphones. Now an AMP is not the same thing, and not all DACs have good amps in them, so depending on your headphones or speakers you might want to double check the power coming out of your dac to make sure it will drive them effectively on its own.

What local directory structure do you use when working with SVN?

Say your repo for "myapp" looks like this

./trunk/
./branches/myapp-unicode
./tags/1.0

If you want to work on myapp-unicode, do you usually check that out into a separate directory, or would you rather use switch to have trunk+myapp-unicode in the same working directory?

If you prefer to have local directories for separate branches, what structure do you prefer?

When you watch TV what you are seeing is broadcasted in really high quality. Like a 60" TV with a high as fuck pixel density can tons of channels all with beautiful content being broadcast straight to them.

Yet if you tried to stream or download any sort of show you want from the internet it would take for fucking ever depending on your connection and not be as good quality.

Is television just simply like satellite internet but established and already distributed all around the globe? Why can't we someone morph it to give us a super fast, already established internet connection? If it has the ability to stream beautiful, high bandwidth content to your huge display shouldn't you be able to utilise that same technology to distribute an equally as good internet connection?

Feels like a dumb, simple sort of question but whatever

My bet is that those are transmitters for wireless headsets.
So, if there is lecture/presentation with a foreign speaker and live, contiguous interpretation people wishing to listen to interpreter can get one of the headsets and listen to him while people who speak the speaker's language can "opt-out".

I work in a cinema and we use similar technology on events, where we show foreign films with no subtitles, but with an interpreter.

Quick torrenting client question: So when uTorrent or a bitTorrent client uploads the files, does the client upload them to the trackers?

If so, does that mean when the ratio (I usually do 1:1 ratio at least) is met and I delete the files on my computer after I use them, are the files still uploaded?
>>
>>55357008
Mostly apple makes cash, they can pick whatever standard they want, be early adopters sell crazy expensive adapters and shit, and around the time other manufacturers start putting out affordable alternatives, they move on to something else. Display port and USB C will probably stick around for a while tho, so we might get some peace. Mico USB has been a freakin godsend
>>
Honest question.

What the fuck do I with my PC?
>>
>>55357203
you are entirely misunderstanding how torrents work

the tracker doesn't have ANY of your file information like mega or rapidshare. It has information that relates to you as far as the transfer of those files and the transfer of the files, but not the files themselves nor anything else. It is not stored anywhere except on your drive and the drives of whoever was leeching off you.

when your torrent client uploads the file, it is uploading them to the computers that are connected to you at that time in the swarm, not any server somewhere. So if you delete the file from your hard drive after seeding, this will only effect your hard drive. This means that if you ever want to seed it again, you will have to redownload the entire file from other people who are seeding. The files on other peoples computers are not effected at all

+1 for deluge. It's a pretty easy adjustment from utorrent, and the plugins are nice. It has a good one for preventing standby mode for instance. Also Label is a good default plugin I would enable once you've got the hang of things. Makes it much easier to organize your torrents.

Utorrent has been fucked up ever since version 3.0 hit. Under new management.

Haswell-E*
Also thermal restrictions on clock speed get more significant the more cores you have, so you tend to end up with lower clock speed overall.
