I want to to build a cheap HTPC ($150 max) which allows me to stream movies and matches in 1080p.. what components should I use?

A chromecast

>>
>>55342788
Buy a raspberry 2 install openelec on it and you're done
>>
What for the Xaomi android tv box. If you can find a Nexus player pick it up but only if it's less that $40. Otherwise stretch your budget and pick up a shield tv. Don't bother with a full of build.
If you use Amazon services a fire tv is a good option.

Get Raspberry Pi and you're golden

What are the limitations of an android tv box like the xiaomi one or >>55343028 in front a raspberry?

I will order parts for a HTPC tonight. Not quite as cheap though. It's basically a 1:1 logicalincrements build.

Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2H
Intel Pentium G4400
4GB Crucial CT4G4DFS8213 DDR4-2133
Cooler Master Silencio 352M
120GB ADATA Premier SP550
430 Watt Corsair CX Series CX430M
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

The machine will also be used for emulation, so that should give me plenty of performance for older stuff.

>get computer out of trash
>install ubuntu server
>install plex
>buy roku streaming sticks for $20 each on ebay for all your tvs
>install torrent program with webui
>now you can access your server from any computer and stream to anywhere in the house

the roku streaming sticks have codecs for all the video formats i've tried so you shouldnt need a powerful cpu for transcoding. my server is running on a old dell optiplex with a core 2 duo

Using this in my bedroom currently. Hasn't stuttered on any of my 10-20GB movies so it should handle pretty much everything although I haven't fallen for the 4k meme yet. Colours seem too bright stock, but nothing too bad. Would recommend.

If you get it, go into app settings and clear app data for kodi, there are a hundred or so chink addons installed by default.

Good to hear, my chromecast can't keep up with my higher bitrate stuff with plex.

This.
Although I would opt for OSMC if you're somewhat of an advanced linux user

So many bad ideas.

Don't buy an Android (ARM) box. Don't build a full PC.

Get a barebones x86_64 mini-pc like a Zotac ZBOX. Add memory and a hard drive or SSD. Install LibreELEC or OpenELEC.
>>
Buy a fucking pi 3 cunt
>>
>>55344459
Also don't get a RPi. That's retarded.

What add-ons do you recommend? I just picked up a settop Android box with Kodi

/g/ is infested with tech-illiterate normies these days.

Android media centers. Ridiculous.

That's even worse than being dumb enough to buy a Raspberry Pi.
>>
>>55344573
You might as well get a FireTV at that point. DESU I don't see the point in custom building a home theater PC in the first place. It's way more cost effective to buy one. I wouldn't install Kodi on it either - I'd probably run an android derivative.

fuck off OP

>>55344668
I have 6 pi's all put to good use in my house, that makes me dumb x6
>>
>>55343520
Out of curiosity, how do you intend to set up your frontend for both emulation and media? Have Retroarch XMB as a program on the Kodi menu?
>>
What advantages are there for a HTPC over an Android box? Most Android boxes seem much cheaper and can handle most/all media playback you throw at it. For storage you can just connect external hard drives or share it wirelessly from a computer or NAS.
>>
Why not just delete shit after you watch it like a normal human being? Why keep hundreds of gigabytes of movies that you've already watched?
>>
>>55343028
I would get an Intel box instead http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_324847.html
