Didn't really think of that, did you?

Not to mention the sunny afternoon all over Asia.
And early evening in Australia.

This is one of the many language cards that bumps Apple II/II+ machines to 64k (forget why it's called a language card).

"So back in '82 we learned that the US Army in West Germany was using Apple IIs to calibrate nuclear missiles. And we didn't sell computers to the military so I figure they must have gotten them from a dealer or something. Still, it didn't make us feel too good knowing our computers were being used to plot mutually assured destruction."

This isn't actually true because DOS takes some of that memory so it's really only 48k and also they don't mention that the computer itself only holds 16k of memory and the rest needs the expansion unit.

I have this book and it's an eye opener on just how horrifying that PC architectures once were. One has to wonder how anyone even managed to set up and use a computer at all.

>Windows randomly freezes on this AST 386 because you have the Rev 4.01A BIOS instead of the Rev 4.01B BIOS
>Windows cannot use a PS/2 mouse on X model of Packard Bell because blah blah blah
>Windows cannot load on this Compaq unless you add X switch to CONFIG.SYS
>this Zenith uses a nonstandard hard disk you will need the OEM version of Windows
>this no-name Taiwanese motherboard requires you to disable X option in the BIOS setup or Windows will randomly reboot while in use

And so forth.

I hope yours is trolling.
>>
>>55336580
I meant in terms of the architecture of the things. You can't begin to imagine just what a spaghetti mess late 80s-early 90s PCs were.
>>
>>55336526
I'm craying right now.
>>
>>55336598
More to do with it being an open spec and everyone trying to write their own rules about how to do things before MS came along and made everyone play nice. A lesson the linux community never learned.
>>
>>55336643
By the late Windows 3.x era, proprietary hardware was disappearing and architectures became more standardized. But can you blame Microsoft? They were the poor bastards having to include support for every last shitty Taiwanese PC clone that used some nonstandard memory mapping scheme or video card.
>>
>>55333710
That is beautiful
>>
>>55336383
"AMI also states that you should use a keyboard controller revision referred to as K8 when using a computer with an AMI motherboard. For non AMI motherboards with an AMI BIOS, you can use version K8 or K0."

"If you do not use a recommended version of the AMI BIOS, Windows may hang your PC when you run Setup or random keystrokes and other problems may occur when using Windows."

"AMI BIOSes dated prior to December 15, 1989 may have difficulties with IDE or ESDI hard disks. When running Windows in enhanced mode, these drives may cause the computer to freeze for up to 10-15 seconds, often enough to freeze Windows or any applications running."
>>
>>55336643
But playing by the rules slowed down the overall development of everything. Which is a shame.

Also, there was no Linux community back then.
>>
The following machines must be explicitly specified in Windows Setup:

AST Premium 386/25 and 386/33
AT&T PCs and NSX 20 Safari Notebook
Everex Step 386/25
HP PCs
Intel 386 SL machines with APM (automatic power management)
IBM PS/2 Model L40sx and P70
NCR 386 and 486 PCs
NEC PowerMate SX+ and ProSpeed 386
Toshiba 1200XE, 1600, and 5200
All Zenith 386 PCs

This does not mean these machines are "bad" or incompatible, it merely means they use certain video or BIOS enhancements that make it impossible for Windows to normally detect memory above 640k, or else they need special drivers to take advantage of features like APM.

The Acer 1100 is not correctly detected by HIMEM.SYS. Edit CONFIG.SYS to read "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /M:ACER1100"

If a serial mouse on your ALR PowerFlex moves the cursor erratically or drags around objects without the left mouse button held down, you may need a motherboard upgrade. Check the revision number tag on the motherboard. If it has a bullet point in it (eg. C-N.OP or C-N.) then you do not need an upgrade. Otherwise contact your ALR dealer for an upgrade to correct this mouse problem.

The ALR 486 VEISA can hang when accessing floppy drives in File Manager. This can be fixed by upgrading to Phoenix BIOS 1.10.02 or higher.

The AST Premium keyboard BIOS (distinct from the ROM BIOS) on AST Premium 286 PCs must be upgraded if the computer freezes as soon as you press a key in Standard Mode. This is not peculiar to Windows and the same upgrade must be performed for other protected mode applications such as Lotus 123 Release 3.0
>>
If your AT&T 60386/25 has Phoenix ROM revision FB12, you will not able to display DOS applications within Windows. Contact AT&T for an upgrade to BIOS revision FB15 or higher.

Club American 486 PCs should be configured in Windows Setup as an Everex Step 386/25. Some early Club American 486s may spontaneously reboot while running Windows. This is a timing problem that was corrected in a later motherboard revision.
>>
And that, children, is just a few of the wondrous things that awaited you when setting up a PC in those days.

Hail Mary full of grace that this is 2016 and not 1991.
>>
>>55337045
I run into that shit from time to time messing with those old pieces of headache.
>>
One more:

386 class Gateway 2000 systems may not be able to load the HIMEM.SYS driver required by Windows to operate despite any configuration parameters used.

This problem only occurs on older Gene II and Hawk motherboards. An upgrade to a newer Bristol Technology Corp motherboard corrects this.

Some Gateway 2000s shipped with a Micronics memory driver that is incompatible with Windows Setup and will cause it to hang.

After some digging in the Usenet archives, I found this amusing little piece of info. Apparently in those days, Gateway didn't manufacture their own motherboards, they bought them from outside suppliers.
