im a network admin who spends most of my time in a terminal.
which distro isnt a meme?
why should i use linux over windows?

Only distros I have tried are Ubuntu and Mint. They worked fine for most things, but I saw no advantage

Is a Rajeet a Pajeet that poos in the loo?
>>
>>55332158
What you tried and what worked fine for you is the best distro.
> no advantage
OS itself is a foundation. Advance of foundation results sometimes in catastrophic system failure. If your work flawlessly done on the current OS, then that OS is the best OS for you.

>>55332158
linux is just a kernel
the full system is called GNU/Linux or just GNU
(you don't call Windows NT)

Hey op, I am just finishing up a networking administration program at my local technical college.

What education and experience did you have prior to landing your job?

thanks
>>
>>55333178
I climbed the ladder like everyone else.
Internship to helpdesk to desktop support to network tech to admin. Certs gained while working
>>
>>55333227
Okay thanks. I will start studying for my Network + cert after my program is finished.

I had a help desk position but I quit because I make very poor decisions. I have been looking for an internship for awhile but hopefully having my AAS will make me a more desirable candidate.

90% of people in IT are autistic kids with poor people skills. Show a little ambition and learn to talk with people and you'll make easy money
The certs may help you get interviews. Make sure your resume is good

I feel so sorry for your networks users. Did you ask the interwebs what an server was too?
>>
>saw no advantage
What you will love is the license.
It is free software.
This means adding an extra server will be the cost of that server.
It means if a computer dies, you can move the harddrive over and have things working without dealing with the licensing or that you might have changed too much of the hardware.
It means you have control over the tools you rely on.
Even if you use windows servers, I would suggest that you run Linux and then use KVM to virtualize windows.
Scripting and setting up a server is also a lot easier.

Use antergos, superior distro
>>
I recently got Linux because I wanted to tip my tinfoil fedora and go under the Windows 10 spyware.

I got Mint because that was described as a good transitional distro, but apparently that makes me a child.

What's bad about it? What's good about it? What's a better choice for casual use/starting out programming and software development?

because there isn't any if unless you have specific needs and want highly customizable OS

I dual boot mint and windows 10, windows for m$ office and gaems, linux for browsing the internet cuz muh security and playing with bash because it's far superior to PowerShell

90% of this is about UX desu, you just can't customize Windows to look and act like you want as much as you can do it with linux

You don't want to use the same softwares as these "things", do you?
That's why you need to install gentoo the only and real OS.

>but I saw no advantage

The advantage is that free software doesn't control and restrict you; it respects your rights. You can see exactly how everything works, and modify it if you want. You can be assured that someone doesn't have a secret backdoor into your computer.

Proprietary software can be powerful and reliable, but it disrespects you as a person, and ruins society as a whole by promoting a divisive attitude/culture instead of one where we work together.

If you think free software is shit and/or lacking, then support and improve it instead of complaining.

Manjaro is good for beginners who don't want to be spoonfed every little detail, because they still want to learn.
>inb4 bloat
Yes the bloat is what makes it good for a beginner, you already have steam, krita, etc. It also has access to the AUR in addition to its own.
Not to mention it is based off of Arch, so most problems you have are well documented on its wiki (if you are new to the GNU/Linux scene, Arch is known for having a very in depth and large wiki).
OP if you are stilm here, do some research on Manjaro for basic desktop computing. For servers, Debian Stable would be your best choice.
