Can we have a gpu general?

Redirect all gpu threads here please so we can discuss graphics cards in one United thread instead of 10 troll threads and 3 serious threads.

This is far better than flooding up the board with gpu and maki threads?

Finally. Thank you OP!

I have an old HD6870, with a gigabyte cooler non reference.

Could I buy the rx480 and put that cooler on it? Is it compatible? I also have a gtx260 with a non reference cooler, could I use that instead?

If you can get a 970 for cheaper then it might be the better deal, depending on how much cheaper.

Guys I think my graphics card is failing.
Never happened to me.

Its a oldish ( it was not mine) Radeon HD7850 2gb. Started crashing everything with black screens sometimes red with stripes.

I have new ram installed and I sure hope its not the hdd or the psu. After unnistalling the drivers in safe mode and booting up with the card disabled windows functions properly, in fact iam using it right now.

I tried installing the new drivers and after entering windows the screen has horizontal artifacts and crashes a few seconds later.

Any anons with the same experience?
>>
>>55330883
>Why do we have to deal with this shit companies?
Because fanboys.

Fanboys constantly excusing Nvidia's poor practices and high prices don't give them a reason to change.

Fanboys constantly forgiving AMD's fuckups and poor performance don't give them a reason to improve.

They just don't understand yes, it's good to have AMD around for competition, but that doesn't mean they have to suck AMD's dick unconditionally.

Nvidia, for better or worse, has earned the privilege to engage in poor practices and jack up prices because they constantly and consistently release the superior product. Even their "faulty" product the 970 retains kind of it's performance range 2+ years later against a brand new card.
>>
>>55330937
Neither. Why buy a card two generations behind? That's just idiotic and a waste of money.

That's a good graphic but it doesn't tell you the full story.

The 390 beats the 8GB 480 in most games and the 4GB in all games.
It costs as low as just 20$ more than the 480. FOR AN AFTERMARKET COOLER VERSION.

The 480 is literally a meme. You're better off getting a 390 and be done with it. And quite honestly, you could've done that an year ago, why the hell did you shills wait?

And I like how a couple of AMD fanboy sites on purpose did not bench 390 vs 480 (Guru 3D being one if you want an example). If the 390 drops in price in the next months there's no reason for anyone to buy this meme card. Which is a possibility because there's a large stock of 390s which have been gathering dust on retailers shelves for years.

>>
Reminder to only buy 970 / 1060 if you don't intend on using them for more than 1-2 years.

It's a given that 2 years from now when everything is DX12 the RX480 will absolutely murder current gen Nvidia cards.

So it really depends on what you plan with your build. If you're looking for a card to keep the next 4 years got for the 480, if you just want something for 1 year go for the 970.

>It's a given that 2 years from now when everything is DX12 the RX480 will absolutely murder current gen Nvidia cards.
If you bothered to check the benches the 970 actually pulls ahead in the DX12 benches for the games which don't required lots of memory.

AMD being better at DX12 turns out to be like their new card - a literal meme.

building a new rig. my current rig is an old q6600 with a 4850x2. has lasted me 7 years and I plan on keeping it as a spare/backup.

I've been waiting for the dust to settle on the RX480, but decided today on a 980. Found one on newegg for $295 (after $25 rebate). The RX480 seems decent but considering ATI drivers on linux are complete shit and also considering they're all sold out to hell, I figured the 980 woudl be an appropriate option.

we'll see when i put it all together. funny going from a q6600 to an i5-6600k.

I might boot windoze for titles that don't work on wine. I haven't done a lot of gaymin over the past few years but I am thinking of going to/hosting more LAN parties. This rig is going to be ITX.

Also, girlfriend is in architecture and uses revit/autocad/etc and I might let her use it to quickly render fancy shit.

I also carry the mindset of future-proofing and like to use my rigs for a long time. Sure, there are cheaper cards, but you reach a certain point where they become not much better than the 4850x2 I currently have that I bought 7 years ago. The 980 may be overkill for what I generally do, but by the time it is considered mediocre (by my standards) it will be time for something new.

So what's the next move for AMD after the RX 480? Are they going for a more powerful card later this year?

Also, I just bought a 1440p 144hz monitor. Do I

The 4gb price is fine. 200usd->270aud+10%. I'm mostly OK with the extra $20 on top of that. However, the extra $40 USD translating to anywhere from a $100-$120 markup is absurd. The XFX price is fair (if you consider that extra $25 markup fair), the others most certainly are not. $420+ is the price they should be going for with an aftermarket cooler, but they'll probably be even more expensive.

Over 300 dollars is not mid range.
The 480 is not a flagship card.
It costs 200 fucking dollars for the 4GB version.
It's the best performance you can get in its price bracket right now (without buying used). Of course, some retailers are jacking up prices because of demand, but that will subside as inventories are replenished. The hype was overblown, as it always is, but the 480 is exactly what it was supposed to be - a solid performer at 1080p, playable at 1440p, and VR capable at a competitive price. The fanboys were the ones saying it would crush the 980 while drawing 100W or less, not AMD themselves.
>>
>>55332913
Never implied they're finished but it's always the same in EU. 390 is more expensive than 970, 1070 costs more than 1080 does in USA. I'm sick and tired of getting fucked. Also 480 will become useless unless Nvidia is serious with that $300 1060 gtx pricing.

If you're doing 3D - get an Nvidia.
If you're doing video - get an Nvidia.
If you're doing some other sort of meme GPGPU - you might have a choice between Nvidia or AMD.
But in general get Nvidia.

AMD has shit OpenGL drivers. They've had them for years. They still haven't fixed them.
Pretty much everything used for professional 3D and video relay on OpenGL. That won't change in the foreseeable future.

If you're considering a 970 wait a bit. The 980 might become cheaper soon and it has very good performance in OpenGL applications.

Just get a grey market key if you have a need for a genuine license or pirate it if you don't.
As for GPU I'd throw an RX 480 in that considering what we know now, but 1060(Ti) specs are coming in a week according to the rumor mills and internet shills so I'd wait just a second. 480s are not even in stock anyways so it's nearly a non-issue. Ok but this assumes the retailers or whatever are paying $199/229USD to stock the card. They aren't. The markup required to make money is part of the initial price, which is why THEY COST THAT MUCH IN THE FIRST PLACE. Shipping costs do not constitute the extra $60, especially when posting a SINGLE GPU FROM THE US WOULD BE $40, LET ALONE IN BULK. The XFX model is a fair price. Everything else is price gouging, plain and simple. They are all the same reference card. There is no reason for the price differences, other than ripping off the consumer.

I fell for the meme of a good overclock and 2133 ram.

Looks like it might be time to spend 300 on a 6600k and a mobo.

>The XFX model is a fair price
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying m8. The $400 mark is absolutely fair, and people charging upwards of 430-480 are jews just trying to rip people off in the early days.

But the prices will settle over the next month or so regardless and considering the non-ref cards will come out after this time, they'll still be competitively priced. Can't imagine the non-ref Sapphire costing over $420.

If you want a gpu for a real workstation, get a Quadro or FirePro. Everything else is childs play. It doesn't matter what you get, because the performance is pretty much the same.

Look at the applications you use and decide which brand you need.
For 3d it's pretty much irrelevant, both are shit solutions and nowhere near real workstation level.
Premiere makes use of Cuda.
Photoshop makes use of OpenCL.
