>Friends from work use WhatsApp
>Family uses Viber
>GF uses XMPP/Jabber
>Grandparents use Skype
>At work, we use Skype for Business
How do I keep up with all these messengers? Why can't we have just one thing?
>inb4 get facebook
no
By not having friends and a GF, also by ditching your family and your job.
Push the need for multiple services onto others. Only use one or two services and make the others use one of those.

Skype for Business can federate with Skype/Skype for Business at other companies and XMPP/Jabber providers. My company federates with all of those (although XMPP federation is being dropped in the coming months for relative lack of use). That's your company's choice, though.

Pidgin?
There's no doubt that this will change and people will start using just one or two platforms.
The internet is shrinking in a sense that people tend to visit way less websites than they used to years ago. People tend to stick to their social media websites for nearly everything; communication, world news, local news and entertainment.
It's quite sad really.
