The crossfire benchmarks were what started the hype. AMD showed off that potential at a tech expo. The idea is that you can spend $400 - $500 and get the performance of a $700 card.
Am I going to do that? No. But its a nice possibility for people that are currently in the market for a $500 video card.

It's not an accurate comparison. Ignoring the probable price drop in the GTX 1080 once the fabrication situation improves, it's just downright disinformation to say you will get the same performance.
Unless AMD can guarantee every game release will either properly support Crossfire or that every DX12 game will include multi-adapter support, it's is dishonest and potentially damaging for their image to openly suggest that you can buy $500 worth of cards for similar performance.
The real ironic part of it is even if you were to manage similar performance out of two 480's, you would need an Intel CPU to alleviate the driver overhead that the Crossfire would introduce.
The point being, shilling crossfire 480's as a substitute is probably the worse thing to do as it will only be relevant in a small number of games and it will only probably hurt AMD in the future when AAA games refuse to support multiple adapters, just like they're already doing.
