AMD RX 480 Review - The Best Graphics Card for the Money?

Do you think these things would handle VR properly?
>>
>>55315289
That depends so you want it to explode or melt?
>>

If i had a choice, I'd like it to melt.
>>

>Do you think these things would handle VR properly?

Nothing can handle VR properly because it's a bullshit meme.
>>
>>55315289
They have repeatedly said it meets the minimum requirements for good VR in this generation of headsets, that's one of the main points of the card.
>>

Beaten by the 970 ex-OC in every single fucking game except for just cause 3, in which it loses by 5 frames (whoop dee doo).

Bravo fucking AMD. Bravo. Can't beat 2 years old nvidishit.

VR graphics are at the current moment shit tier -- tennis ball-sized pixes, garbage.

Yup,970 is better.

Help me lads. RX-480 or GTX 960?
>>
>>55315393

970 has been $250 for over a year now (if you bought through goyim-stock or similar deals), the 480 is $230 MSRP. the difference in price is negligible, especially when the 970 is beating the 480 across the board.

Please tell us how the 3d meme became a huge long lasting success (besides theaters, which have had it since he 70ies or so). Also, please tell us how VR isn't going to die out like a candle in the night because of the exact same problems (inconvenient, hassle with extra specific hardware, not enough autism among normies).

the 970 already has very low power consumption, the rx 480 doesn't offer anything radical in this regard. Face it, we lost... again.

RX 480 has 4 GB of VRAM and costs 200$
GTX 970 has 3,5GB of usable VRAM and costs 250$
The price difference is not negligible, also the 970 takes more juice to run.
What is negligible? The performance difference is. This is why RX480 is the better choice for now, unless 970 starts selling at 170$ or something.

>>

>>
>>55315364
Yes, every single game except for JC3, except for the ones you didn't mention. What about the ones the 480 loses by <5 frames? Whoop dee doo? Or is that reserved for AMD
>>
>>55315393
I can get a 970 right now for $240 and then I can actually overclock my GPU without causing a system crash, and I also don't have to throw my chips in with AMD (a company that has had historically bad drivers for 12+ months after the release of new architecture).

$240 is the same price exactly as the 8 GB version of this AMD shitcard.

$240 is also only $40 more expensive than the 4 GB version, which is the same price as a shitty dinner for two at a 3 star restaurant. I'd rather bite the extremely hefty $40 price difference and be able to play my cards with the company that has been beating AMD for years, the trusted card that's been out for 2 years and has known benchmarks and performance, and the card that has good OC potential rather than "2% OVERCLOCK? FORGET ABOUT IT, I'M DEAD!"
>>
>>55315459
>First of all we don't know the 970 doesn't beat the 480 across the board, we don't have trustworthy review yet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CJBaZ9V2Eo

>Secondly, I wouldn't say the price is negligible

$20 is a negligible difference. You will be hard pressed to even find a 480 at the MSRP that isn't reference dogshit regardless (for the same price you can get a 970 with a really good cooler and OC it to >1500mhz boost for stock 980 performance)

>POWER CONSUMPTION

the difference in TDP between a 970 and a 480 is 25W. That's less than the difference between a 970 and a 390.

There is literally no reason to buy a 480 now unless you're buying out of brand loyalty, AMD had a legitimate chance at a comeback here and instead has probably launched the worst product they've made since bulldozer.
>>

AMDEAD.
>>
>>55315470
it's because 1070 and 1080 are not competing int he same market. It's pointless to list them.

if you're really curious, the 1070 would have 1.5 times the performance, at least, compared to the 480, in every single one of these games. in terms of power the cards aren't even close.
>>
So I can get a 390 for 300 yuropoor currency currently in Finland, whereas this will likely cost around 280-300. A 390x is 350€. Even with potential driver optimizations and an aftermarket model (which will cost even more), it seems to be a complete disappointment.

Why do AMD insist on selling these garbage reference cards? It's the 290/X all over again. This piece of shit hits 90c with a 1.5% overclock.
>>
>>55315505
You think it's okay for AMD to release a new card that competes in the mid range market but loses to an already-existing mid range card that has been out for 2 years, created by a competitor? That's why it's a big deal for the card to LOSE by 5 frames on almost everything. Winning 1 game by a small fucking margin shows how shit the card is.

>DX12 is the future

AMD cards don't even support DX12_1 and I bet none of the Polaris cards do either, this is the exact case as Nvidia not supporting the same type of async compute shaders implementation as AMD(nVidia’s implementation has less granularity than AMD’s, and nVidia also relies on the CPU/driver to handle some of the scheduling work), from now own you're either going to get games that run well on AMD or Nvidia but not both.

There is this game "Ashes of Singularity" that people claim to be an good indication about DX12, when is not in fact the developers Oxide is just clueless in general they are know for stuff like Star Swarm scandal, they feed it a workload that they KNOW will choke on a specific driver/GPU (in the case of Star Swarm they sent extremely long command lists to DX11. This mostly taxed the memory management in the driver, which was never designed to handle lists of that size. nVidia fixed up their drivers to deal with it though. It was never really an API issue, they just sent a workload that was completely unrepresentative of any realistic game workload). Again a case of bad code being bad. When you optimize a rendering pipeline for an actual game, you will look for a way to get the BEST performance from the hardware, not the worst. So worst case you don’t use asynchronous shaders, and you should get DX11-level as a minimum (there is no way to explicitly use asynchronous shaders in DX11). Best case you use a finely tuned workload to make use of new features such as asynchronous shaders to boost performance and ofcourse if you don't yo uget negative eprformance which is what happens with Ashes implementation for Nvidia cards, which by the way IT IS DISABLED on all Nvidia cards EVEN PASCAL 1080/1070.

Also just look at this http://www.neowin.net/news/directx-12-a-game-changer-for-xbox-one
Oxide has a pretty poor track record here, spreading dubious benchmarks, and outright wrong information.

Expanding on DX12_1
The two main features in 12_1 are rasterizer ordered views and conservative raster. Intel has supported rasterizer ordered views for years already!, and had their own extension for it in DX11 already.
Trying to claim that this has come from nVidia is rather clueless.
But once Again AMD makteering hard at work.

What is even worse is that you can't say anything bad about AMD without a horde of brainwashed fanboys attacking you.

While we are on the topic of AMD why don't get talk about GameWorks vs GPUOpen.

Often is said that GameWorks is unfair for AMD because they don't get the source code, while GPUOpen itself might be open source THE GAMES THEMSELVES THAT USE IT ARE NOT, What this means is that when a game decides to use an open source library, the code is basically ‘frozen in time’ as soon as they build the binaries, which you eventually install when you want to play the game. So even though you may have the source code for the effect framework, what are you going to do with it? You do not have the ability to modify the game code. So if the game happens to be unoptimized for a given GPU, there is nothing you can do about it, even if you do have the source.

The second mistake is believing that you need the source code to optimize for it when in fact this is not the case.
In the old days, GPU vendors generally did not have access to the source code anyway (it might sound crazy, but in the old days, game developers actually developed games, as in, they developed the whole renderer and engine. Hardware suppliers supplied the hardware).

>>
>>55315930
So, assuming you don’t get access to the source code, is there nothing you can do? Well no, on the contrary. In most cases, games and effect frameworks (even GameWorks) generally just perform standard Direct3D or OpenGL API calls. There are various game development tools available to analyze D3D or OpenGL code. For example, there is Visual Studio Graphics Diagnostics: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh873207.aspx

Basically, every game developer already has the tools to study which API calls are made, which shaders are run, which textures and geometry are used, how long every call takes etc. Since AMD and nVidia develop these Direct3D and OpenGL drivers themselves, they can include even more debugging and analysis options into their driver, if they so choose.

So in short, it is basically quite trivial for a GPU vendor to analyze a game, find the bottlenecks, and then optimize the driver for a specific game or effect (you cannot modify the game, as stated, so you have to modify the driver, even if you would have the source code). The source code isn’t even very helpful with this, because you want to find the bottlenecks, and it’s much easier to just run the code through an analysis-tool than it is to study the code and try to deduce which parts of the code will be the biggest bottlenecks on your hardware.

So next time you hear AMD saying how GameWorks is unfair remember they are just playing the emo card.
>>
>>55315905
So this is it then... AMD's day is finally here....... They just won the "needs an upgrade due to having a 3+ year old card (because upgrading with a 1-2 year old card would be almost pointless), but is a poorfag and only wants a mid range card but for some reason can't afford a GTX 980, and also doesn't care that AMD's drivers will be dead for another 12 months" market??? It's over, nvidia is fucking finished. I've heard there are as many as five, and possibly even six people in that target market. How will nvidia be able to deal with losing that market?

>>55316042
Even if you had the source code, unless you have the source code for the game itself it is pretty much useless.

Even so at best you could only read the source code and try to improve your drivers(you cannot modify the game so you have to fix it through your driver)
The only time GPU vendors actually want/need access to the source code is when they want to make fundamental changes to how a game works, either to improve performance, or to fix some bug. But even then, they don’t literally need access to the source code, they need the developer to change the code for them and release a patch to their users. Sometimes this requires taking the developer by the hand through the source code, and making sure they change what needs to be changed.
