You can fit a quad-core processor in the thing but it'll overheat quickly. Unless you're going to use it as a Facebook machine (in which case you should get an Apple) it'll run most modern software rather poorly.

Depends on what you want to do with it.
Still usable for shitposting/FB, watching shit, doing some scripting, as a cheap "home server"...
But for serious image manipulation, video editing or developing with a bloated IDE I'd get something else.

Usable for most usecases that don't require a fuckton of processing power. Shitposting, office shit, coding sans huge bloated IDEs, streaming, playback, even light vidya without slightest problems. Photoshop possible but not very snappy even with an ssd.
Hell even my T60 still handles most of that shit.

I have an x220 which has the same CPU so the same graphics. Runs GNOME just fine even with Windows Server 2012 R2 VM no lags. So you can run bloated IDE's ^^ it's just fine to get your daily shit done

I have a T420, runs fine. I have windows 10 and Mint XFCE dual booting on it.
Works great for youtube, facebook, shit posting and other light computer use.
Would also be fine for word documents or similar light tasks.

I don't know. I got a T430 because it has a slightly better iGPU, and the drivers supports Windows 10 officially.
I use it for shitposting, light gaming, youtube, music.
After putting an SSD, it feels fast enough for me.
But be sure to get a extended battery

I have a T420s running Windows 10 and Ubuntu. Both run great. I do C++ development on it with Visual Studio 2015 and Qt Creator on Win/Lin and it is great. I put a Samsung 850 EVO SSD in and it is lovely and fast. Boots either OS in around 6 seconds, never feels slow. Obviously isnt going to be something you want to use for encoding video but no laptop is imho.

Running Timesink Linux on my T420 with 8 gigs of ram and 900p display. Works great but highly recommend buying an SSD for it, as hard drive speeds are a little sluggish sometimes. Got the 9 cell so it can last about 8 hours. I regularly play Quake, Doom, Xonotic, and Rimworld on it without issues and the thing is damn near indestructible.

Upgraded to 8GB of RAM and slapped an SSD in there and the thing is a super fast tank.
If there's anything wrong with it, it's the insanely shitty screen. Insanely low brightness, resolution, and poor viewing angles make for a pretty shitty viewing experience.

compare the i5 cpu benchmark passmark scores for this and any recent laptop that also has an i5. the difference is not overly significant. i still use my t420 and i manage to play most doujin games and vector thrust with no issues. also for office productivity, it's still plenty useful.
