Hey /g/,
I've got a precision m3800 with a corei7, 16gb of ram, a 256gb ssd and a 512gb drive. I dual boot windows 10 and Ubuntu 14.04lts, but spend 98% of my in Ubuntu.

It has been pretty damn solid for the last 2 and 1/2 years, but recently has been behaving strangely making me think it might be starting to die.

Having 16gb of ram was really nice previously because I was doing some big data / machine learning stuff and I could run a lot of experiments right on my laptop, but currently I just need to run a handful of virtual machines with vagrant so I'm debating whether I need 16gb, since it looks like a lot of machine are just including 8gb now.

Previously I had a macbook pro I had inherited from a job but opted for my dell because it was cheaper with better specs.

If I am in the market for something now, what should I get? 13 inch Dell XPS? New super thin HP spectre? Another fully loaded 15 incher?

My budget is about 2k, but it would be pretty nice to spend less.

Thanks.

I suppose so, but I was won over by the form factor of the m3800.

Yup, I dun goofed. I shouldn't be surprised that it is running funny now after running hot for 2 years.

So what? The recommendation is go full workstation with the latest 4800?

Unless you absolutely need portability a desktop would be better in every other way except portability. Personally in the market for an M4800 myself actually, though I'm only getting a low end used one for the 1080p screen and build.
