Not everybody who buys a GPU cares about something so childish like performance in video games, GPUs can be used for other scientific purposes.
And even in the consumer grade, for example, you can select different levels of decoding in MadVr shaders wich requires a powerful GPU, which significant increase the output quality. So my Anime looks a lot better, but also works for every kind of video input.

the good thing about 970's is that even shitty low end models like fucking gainward can overclock to at least 1400 mhz. they're generally very reliable. the expensive models will probably have better vrm's and cooling but it generally won't be a noticeable difference. the only change would probably be that you can overclock to 1400 mhz without increasing voltage on a expensive, high binned card but the cheaper cards will most likely require some extra voltage to achieve the same clocks. basically nothing too major.

Nope, in fact Roy Taylor said the following a while before the RX 480 was announced:
"The reason Polaris is a big deal, is because I believe we will be able to grow that TAM [total addressable market] significantly," said Taylor. "I don't think Nvidia is going to do anything to increase the TAM, because according to everything we've seen around Pascal, it's a high-end part. I don't know what the price is gonna be, but let's say it's as low as £500/$600 and as high as £800/$1000. That price range is not going to expand the TAM for VR. We're going on the record right now to say Polaris will expand the TAM. Full stop."
They gave zero shits about the high end parts from the start. People would know this if they had paid attention.
