After removing the bottom screws, the keyboard is somewhat of a pain if it is grimey, you have to push the bottom part of it up because some screws are hidden between the keys.
It i kind of easy, the ribbon cable for the touchpad is below the keyboard ribbon cables, one thing i came across a problem was units with fingerprint scanners, those ribbon cables are glued/taped to the frame. I could of ripped the cable but luckily it was sturdy.
Oddly enough, when I rescrewed the touchpad to the palmrest I couldn't tighten it all the way on one side because it was a bit recessed, not flush.

Alright /tpg/, I need some help.
My mom got a T420, and I was gonna give her a fresh install of Windows 10 to get rid of all the bloatware. In order to do a fresh install, you need a product key, but of course this thing only has an OEM key. You can upgrade to Windows 10 without a product key, but that would keep all the files, which is what I'm trying to avoid.
Anyway, tl;dr, I have an OEM key but I need an actual product key to upgrade to Windows 10.
Guess this isn't really a Thinkpad question, but it seems pretty basic so I'm sure one of you guys has an answer.

so, using a guide as to not fuck anything up, i disassembled my t420 yesterday just enough to replace the cpu thermal paste (took off keyboard and palm rest). after putting it back together in the reverse order that I disassembled it, now the left click (keyboard side) doesn't work. the keyboard connector/cable don't appear damaged and all the other buttons work fine; is this a common problem that can be remedied or am I fucked?

I don't think the XPS 15 is designed with running under full load for extended periods in mind. This is the biggest difference between ultrabooks and a mobile workstation like the P50.

It's not too difficult on any technical level. The motherboard is almost the same exact shape, so it's just a matter of following the hardware maintenance manual and swapping the new motherboard in once you've got it stripped down that far. You do have to grind down a couple parts of the chassis for it to fit properly, but go slow and you won't mess it up. The hard part is finding all the components you need at reasonable prices. T9300 CPU is the easiest, it shouldn't be more than $30 on ebay. T9500 costs twice as much for a mere 100MHz increase, don't bother with it. 8GB DDR2 will run you $100+ easily. Best to stick to 4 or 6 if you can. The UXGA T60/T60p is the hardest find. Those who know they have it almost always want upwards of $300 for it. Be patient and look everywhere, and you too will find your inexpensive UXGA T60p. 14" 4:3 Intel T61s can be somewhat uncommon, no doubt due in part to the existence of this mod. Nvidia boards are more readily available, but the increased heat output and battery usage make them rather undesirable. I've tried both and would recommend the Intel every time. It does have to be a 14" 4:3 board, 16:10 boards have different shapes and port arrangements and will not fit with any amount of chassis modification.

Bought a T420 for ~$180, but it's 1366x768.
6 GB ram, 7200 RPM 250 GB HDD, pretty solid condition, OpenSUSE indicates 80% capacity on the battery.
I'm really miffed about the resolution but I figured I was just gonna use it for text/course work anyway (I have a desktop setup too), and it was very cheap compared to the competition ($320 USD for a 1080p was the cheapest other I could find and it was Grade C)

I traded my X230 for X230T. It was a mistake.
Eventually I didn't use the tablet mode for shit and I had a wobblier screen with worse build quality than in regular X230.
The only good thing was that the tablet model screen is always an IPS.

If I want to clean keyboard and touchpad of t450s, can i just use water on the installed keyboard and touchpad and let the drainage system dry it, or do I have to remove the keyboard and clean it then?
Recently picked up a ThinkPad X230 with IPS display for £269. On top of this I upgraded the HDD to a Integral P Series 4 120GB SSD for £25 and a second 4GB stick of RAM for £13.50 or so. And honestly, I don't mind the keyboard over the X220. Very happy with the purchase to be honest. Paid a bit more for the unit than I probably should have but it has very minor wear and no cracks or chips so happy.
This comes after owning a 600X, R51, T61, X61s and T420. Got rid of the T420 as it wasn't in the best of condition and it didn't feature USB 3 - which sucked.

Latitude 7470 or 7270? The 7470 has a bigger screen and longer battery life while the 7270 is lighter and a bit cheaper but lacks a trackpoint. I'm a bit concerned about the weight since I walk to and from the college where I'm going to be primarily using it.
I briefly considered the 7370 but it makes too many tradeoffs for being thin and light.
