Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

How do I soften her clit?

my x240 is already dying. Screen flickers and locks when adjusting it, freezing, and sometimes when it's turned off it wont turn on until you open it unplug the internal battery and hold the power button (assuming ram is corrupted and needs to be fully drained). Won't be buying another thinkpad. There aren't any good laptops anymore i dont know what to get to replace it.

Is it particularly difficult to replace the shite T440 touchpad with the not-shite T450/T460 physical button pad?
>>
>>55309824
No way, thats awesome.
1GB RAM is nice, my T30 has 512KB :o, A31p has 2GB.

>>55309853
Eh.
After removing the bottom screws, the keyboard is somewhat of a pain if it is grimey, you have to push the bottom part of it up because some screws are hidden between the keys.

It i kind of easy, the ribbon cable for the touchpad is below the keyboard ribbon cables, one thing i came across a problem was units with fingerprint scanners, those ribbon cables are glued/taped to the frame. I could of ripped the cable but luckily it was sturdy.

Oddly enough, when I rescrewed the touchpad to the palmrest I couldn't tighten it all the way on one side because it was a bit recessed, not flush.
>>
>>55309911
That's not so bad, I've done that on my T420 to add more memory. I don't have to cut the frame or anything, it just fits right in?
>>
Alright, so ive found a T43 for 70$.
Which is expensive as shit.

Except for the fact that its brand new, brand new as in still in its box, everything is still wrapped in plastic and foam.

Wat do.

Also on the buy list is a 600 with windows 95 for 200$ (im sure everyone's seen those on ebay), or a 770Z for 40$, but its a bit beat up, nothing serious, but a good cleaning and possibly some scratch repair needed
>>
>>55310144
Yeah.
I mean it is a little bit tricky to put the ribbon cable back in the motherboard but it is pretty easy otherwise, just a bit more steps than a T400 would be.

>>55310192
600 is way too pricey, i mean like... 80 for a good one but thats still a bit too much. I paid $50 for one of mine, luckily i got a second one from work.

770Z, why that model?
I sold a 5:4 display for $250, I have a second one but i need to clear bios on it or mobo swap.

I like the 770 series because they are fat as fuck. but they usually have palmrest wear because of the shit they used to coat it, at least it doesn't have the medical smell of the 600.

I think I paid $80 for a T43p.
Nice that it is in a box still, thats pretty hard to find. Keep it, itll add value to it (which it should cost more desu)
>>
>>55310290
im interestred in the 770z because of its unique little lcd display it has on it

looking closer, its not beat up, the fucker just didnt bother to clean the poor machine

im thinking ill max my bid at 40$ over the course of the next few days
>>
>>55310374
Yeah the LCD is pretty neat, dat volume wheel.
Not bad, good luck.
Its not the 5:4 display model (they have a slightly thicker bezel at the sides.

I love mine, the battery still held a charge when I got it, small charge, but some.
>>
>>55310374
What can you run on this thins, and can you control the LCD?
>>
>>55310374
God that is morbid. How would you go about cleaning that?
>>
>>55310663
its a 366mhz pentium 2 with 128mb of ram and an 8mb dedicated gpu

i actually dont know what could run on it, im only 19, the oldest shit i can think of that might run on it is maybe a habbo hotel retro from pre 2005, or possibly command and conquer

i think the LCD is limited to battery life and other indicators, its not a printable screen

Alright /tpg/, I need some help.
My mom got a T420, and I was gonna give her a fresh install of Windows 10 to get rid of all the bloatware. In order to do a fresh install, you need a product key, but of course this thing only has an OEM key. You can upgrade to Windows 10 without a product key, but that would keep all the files, which is what I'm trying to avoid.
Anyway, tl;dr, I have an OEM key but I need an actual product key to upgrade to Windows 10.

Guess this isn't really a Thinkpad question, but it seems pretty basic so I'm sure one of you guys has an answer.
Unless all of you nerds fell for the Linux meme.

distribute RAM equally on the 2 RAM banks if you are using 2 RAM sticks, i.e. 2x2GB, 2x4GB.. because with uneven distribution there's some fuckery with graphics on Windows. If you care about that at all.

So what about batteries?

The one that came with my T420 is sorta disappointing. Lasts half an hour with normal use, an hour tops if I don´t touch anything.

I´ve checked amazon and I´m seeing 9 cell batteries for 30€, and others for 90€. Is this one of those things where you should put in some money, or are some just overpriced as hell but not better than the cheap ones, like happens with cables?
>>

>>
>>55323032
Right, I'm sure it gets nice and close to overheating if you stress it though, you can only cram so much heatsink into a slim form factor.

I don't think the XPS 15 is designed with running under full load for extended periods in mind. This is the biggest difference between ultrabooks and a mobile workstation like the P50.

Is $375 too much for a X220 with an i5, 256gb ssd, and 8gb?

I'm on the fence. I need a new top because I'm going back to school and I want something portable but sturdy. The keyboard needs to be comfy.
>>

Seems steep, in the UK I got a T420 with i5, 8GB ram, 1600x900 screen and 160GB SSD for the equivalent of $185.

So as when my fall quarter in college gets closer, I plan on buying a thinkpad. What does /g/ like? It doesn't (and preferably shouldn't) focus on power, since that's what this computer is for, and it should be cheap, but sturdy and somewhat well built.

adapter came today, got it booted up
honestly, dank machine, only issue is the screen has some dark spots, which to be honest, i dont care much about
buying a replacement screen is like 60$ and i paid that much for the whole laptop

for a fucking housefire as a processor, this thing actually stays incredibly chill on idle
i thought the fan was broken until i opened up 15 different programs, then it kicked in, temp went from 35c to 40c and stuck there as i kept opening more and more shit

its a beast of a machine, took that abuse like a champ

How difficult would this be? I built this computer, but I have very little experience with working with laptops. The most I've ever done is remove the RAM and the hard drive, which I'm probably going to put in a thinkpad if doing so would be an upgrade.

>>
>>55328809
It's not too difficult on any technical level. The motherboard is almost the same exact shape, so it's just a matter of following the hardware maintenance manual and swapping the new motherboard in once you've got it stripped down that far. You do have to grind down a couple parts of the chassis for it to fit properly, but go slow and you won't mess it up. The hard part is finding all the components you need at reasonable prices. T9300 CPU is the easiest, it shouldn't be more than $30 on ebay. T9500 costs twice as much for a mere 100MHz increase, don't bother with it. 8GB DDR2 will run you $100+ easily. Best to stick to 4 or 6 if you can. The UXGA T60/T60p is the hardest find. Those who know they have it almost always want upwards of $300 for it. Be patient and look everywhere, and you too will find your inexpensive UXGA T60p. 14" 4:3 Intel T61s can be somewhat uncommon, no doubt due in part to the existence of this mod. Nvidia boards are more readily available, but the increased heat output and battery usage make them rather undesirable. I've tried both and would recommend the Intel every time. It does have to be a 14" 4:3 board, 16:10 boards have different shapes and port arrangements and will not fit with any amount of chassis modification.

This video goes over pretty much everything you need to know that I may or may not have covered above:

Thanks a lot, I'll screencap your post for later. I have 2x2 GB RAM and a 320 3 GB/s hard drive that I pulled out of my uncle's dead laptop.

I had a x220 I got out of eBay that quit on me much the same way you describe it wouldn't stay on, random shutdowns you'd have to unplug the battery and power and let it sit there. Had it for only a couple of weeks. Now I'm looking on eBay again and was thinking of a x240 but you're making me wonder if I should get that or get something else, I'd like to have a laptop with 8 hour battery life and not be as slow as my T4400 laptop feels right now.

This is probably a silly question, but here goes: am I better off getting a T420 "in good working condition" off of Ebay for $130, or an official refurbished T420 for $230 from Newegg?
>>
>>55336669
Refurbished ones generally come with some warranty and generally are in better shape. On the other hand the price difference is so large that you could just save $100 for buying second T420 if the first one breaks for whatever reason.

I'd take the "good working condition" one with $130.

I assume there are little to no difference in specs.

6 GB ram, 7200 RPM 250 GB HDD, pretty solid condition, OpenSUSE indicates 80% capacity on the battery.

I'm really miffed about the resolution but I figured I was just gonna use it for text/course work anyway (I have a desktop setup too), and it was very cheap compared to the competition ($320 USD for a 1080p was the cheapest other I could find and it was Grade C)

Recently picked up a ThinkPad X230 with IPS display for ÂŁ269. On top of this I upgraded the HDD to a Integral P Series 4 120GB SSD for ÂŁ25 and a second 4GB stick of RAM for ÂŁ13.50 or so. And honestly, I don't mind the keyboard over the X220. Very happy with the purchase to be honest. Paid a bit more for the unit than I probably should have but it has very minor wear and no cracks or chips so happy.

This comes after owning a 600X, R51, T61, X61s and T420. Got rid of the T420 as it wasn't in the best of condition and it didn't feature USB 3 - which sucked.

I need something that won't melt if I play games, and I've been looking at either a W520, or a dell/hp 17" workstation

sweet, I'm probably going to get a t430 to replace my t420 as a server.
also can a t530 fit in the same dock? I'm not sure if I want to go quadcore or not.

oh god just two pins?
I assume that they're send and receive?
>>55347195
the t400 should play 1080p 60fps fine, but expect the battery life to be dogshit when playing that video.
why wouldn't you just step up to a t420 which is higher resolution (1600x900 vs 1440x900) and has a much better cpu and igpu.

for vidya get a t430 with the dgpu
it won't play modern games very well, but thinkpads aren't gaming laptops.

its a 6820 speccy a shit

Latitude 7470 or 7270? The 7470 has a bigger screen and longer battery life while the 7270 is lighter and a bit cheaper but lacks a trackpoint. I'm a bit concerned about the weight since I walk to and from the college where I'm going to be primarily using it.

I briefly considered the 7370 but it makes too many tradeoffs for being thin and light.

Get the 7470 because at least if it ages, itll be an old laptop with a bigger screen and whatnot.
