A/C is expensive because you're cooling your whole house. Technically the only part of the house that has to be cool is the part a few inches from your face. The rest of the house can stay 120 °F for all you care.

If you actually use the heat capacities and set mCΔT for the ice block and the house equal, the ice block might cool the whole house down by 0.000001 degrees, but you're feeling its localized effect in a small area.

Technically, using a freezer inside your house to create the block of ice will end up heating your house due to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, which essentially states that you'll never break even with the waste heat from the work required to move heat from cold to hot (which is what freezers/refrigerators/air conditioners do), which is why you can't cool down your house by opening up your refrigerator.

Fahrenheit is like this:
0 = Shits cold yo
10 = god danm its cold
30 = things are frozen, but the sun melts snow still
40 = cold but not unbearable
50 = hoodie and jeans weather
60 = long sleeve shirts optional, short sleeve recommended
70 = ideal temperature, cool and warm at the same time
80 = shits hot, but if its not too humid its alright
90 = its fucking hot
100 = kill me now
110 = all hail satan, the lord of hell fire
120 = if its humid, you have died of heatstroke
130 = even if its dry, you have died of heatstroke

meanwhile celcius has a similar range but starts in the negatives end ends in the mid 40's?

By the end of the 20th century, Fahrenheit was only used as the official temperature scale in the United States (including its unincorporated territories), its freely associated states in the Western Pacific (Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands), the Bahamas, Belize, and the Cayman Islands. All other countries in the world now use the Celsius scale.

Wrong. Having two scales in your country is objectively better. One for laymen and one for the scientific community.

celsius is like this:
0 water freezes

>>55290012
The point is that measuring when water freezes and boils is important when you're doing those things, but usually humans don't find them selves in enviornments where those numbers are super important. Never will you be somewhere where water boils in the unmodified atmosphere, and likewise being outside when it's 0 C isn't really all that cold. Now it may be true that it doesn't take a genius to tell that 24-27 C is comfortable, but it just makes more sense to measure things in the most sensible way possible. Scientific measurements for science, human measurements for humans. Not hard.

Not just water, pure water under specifically 100 kilopascals (14.5 psi) of pressure. Water does not freeze or boil at static temperatures. If you were in Bogota, it would boil closer to 91c. If you were on the west bank, above 100c
>>
>>55288490
Not a matter of being too dumb to use decimals; you just get better resolution in the expected range of ambient temperatures if you use Fahrenheit. Celsius is optimized for measuring the temperature of water in its three phases. Fahrenheit is optimized for measuring the temperatures of the human environment.

It's currently 110 here.. Two weeks ago our Saturday high was 117, and our Sunday high was 119 as ambient air Temps. Summer lasts until about September, sometimes October.. Yuma was built as a testament to man's arrogance. 2am this morning it was 91.

Side note for anyone in Celsius, that's 43.3, to 48.8.

-25c and under = extremely cold, unbearable for more than an hour if windy
-25c to -15c = very cold
-15c to -5c = cold
-5c to 5c = chilly, can get by with a hoodie
5-10c = perfect temperature
10-15c = comfortable
15-20c = starting to get warm, somewhat uncomfortable if humidity is high
20-25c = warm, starting to get uncomfortable
25-30c = hot
30-35c = very hot
35c and above = unbearably hot
>>
>>55289117

It would be just as easy if water froze at 0 and boiled at 1. That is, not as easy as farenheit due to the smaller difference between degrees

You can replace USA with any other country, because no one country makes at least 50% of scientific advancements
That being said, the USA does have a plurality, and probably contributes more important things than most other countries.

I'd rather it be 95 degrees and 50-60% humidity than 115 and 10% humidity. Saves a hell of a lot of money on my utilities by not having to maintain a minimum 30 degree delta for a minimum of comfort. Tires last longer. My dogs don't need nearly as much water. Etc.etc.etc.

>memories of Michigan in the summer

I remember back in the 90's temps got to around 105-110F w/90%+ humidity. They had excessive heat advisories every day.

Then I moved out here to Phoenix and found out what REAL heat was all about. When you hit 120F, dry heat or not, that shit is awful... Even worse when you have to commute in a car with broken AC and the temps are already over 100 degrees at 7am. I drove to work in my underwear quite often. Even got pulled over once for rolling a stop sign and when the cop came to my window all I had to do was say "No AC" and point to my work clothes on a hanger in the back window and he ignored it.

Come on over and see if you can handle the winters also.

Lots of places are hot and lots are cold, but very few places see the extreme temperature variation the US does. That's why there's so many tornadoes all the time here and you barely see them anywhere else in the world.
