Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I'm a freetard in my free time. I use MIT license for my stuff. I don't think it would be for my "freedom" if gnu RMS forces me to use his license should I take inspiration from a code under GPL. Also, if a dude wants to fork me, who am I to force him to use the exact same license?

There's no such ego battle with MIT and BSD hence my personal inclination not to use GPL except if I *really* need it. (Which is the same inclination I have toward proprietary code)

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

>>
>>55280893
Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source".

This term was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"), It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about freedom! Is for this that the free software movement is fighting for.

So what is "free" software? Free software is any software, that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
>0. Run the program as you wish.
>1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
>2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
>3. Distribute your modified version of the program.

Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns into a technological issue...

So for those reasons I ask that, in the future, you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.

Upstream makes perfectly good software

Debian fucks it up with their shitty patches

The longer it goes without bug reports, the further down in the chain it goes

there is pretty much no serious testing or auditing they just hope it doesn't break since it's been reliable up to this point

debian is the toyota corolla of linux

everything is running fine and then your head gasket blows and leaks flaming passwords everywhere

Hello, I've been using Kubuntu for some time and I have tons of problems with plasma. Moving icons around in dolphin or on the "desktop" is very slow. It seems to move to the cursor basing on coordinates it generated instead of setting position or just using linear interpolation to cursors position. Next problem is lack of support for my VGA adapter. There's something wrong with my GPU and my whole PC loses power when I connect more than one screen to DVI port but it works with DVI + DVI->VGA. I've written data about my screen to that xorg(?) file and it works but sometimes I have to do it again as the file is deleted randomly. Next problem, panels at the bottom are sometimes placed on wrong screen and overlaps each other. Enabling xinerama disables plasma. I'm fixing everything myself as I don't want to go back to Windows, my experience is much nicer on Linux but these problems are not very nice and I would love to get rid of them. Have anyone had similiar difficulties? Should I just get rid of the whole KDE and go back to one of these new Gnome2 forks? Sorry for taking that much of your time and I wish you an amazing day, my friends :)

The BIOS says F5 to enable it, but it doesn't recognise the function keys. Instead says below
Local F1: Help
Remote: F5 = Esc + 5

How do I input and F5? If I press Esc, it gets out of the menu. Pressing 5 and then Esc seems to do nothing.

basically new packages go to experimenta, if they don't break everything they go to unstable/sid, if they don't break anything they go to testing within ~2 weeks, if they don't break anything they make it into stable. this ensures that most/all bugs and problems are known and can be avoided.

no, he was probably a fedora rawhide or gentoo user. both of these are fine but being completely like upstream is not always the best thing to do, and debian doesn't actually patch a lot, they are known for their fast security updates and patches though. listening to people that are this one-sided is often a very bad idea.

A hint: don't set Super (Windows key) to the xfce appfinder or whisker-menu by itself (like how the start menu opens when you press Win in Windows) because then it'll end up opening whenever you use a shortcut using the Super key. I like to have either the appfinder or whisker-menu on Super+R because then it's similar to Windows' Run command.

Learn to read. This thread is about the GNU/Linux system, not just the Linux kernel and its community. Since Dr. Stallman is the driving force behind the GNU project (which has contributed a much larger percentage to the GNU/Linux system) I think it is only fitting to have him as our "mascot".
>>
>>55283835
>you can just enter boards.4chan.org/g in your address bar or have a shortcut or a bookmark?
That's not the issue. The issue is the search engine not being able to find something I'm basically spelling for it. I hate google as much as any other fucker, but I'm not going to use a subpar search engine if it's useless. A lamp without a light bulb sure is eco-friendly, but of no use.

>>55283881
Referring to the GNU/Linux operating system as just Linux is harmful to the free software movement and undermines its cause: the user's freedom. If you refuse to call it by its whole name you suggest that the part the GNU project played in the development of the GNU/Linux OS was so minimal it isn't worth mentioning, and that the contribution of a single opportunistic Finn with no interest in software freedom is the single most important thing about the entire system.
Therefore, if you refuse to give the GNU project credit for the work it has done in creating the GNU/Linux operating system, you oppose software freedom and are part of the system that is keeping computer users under the boots of proprietary software developers. Your like are one of the reasons why we still have spyware, security problems in software, inflated software cost and price and unethical distribution practices.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as GNU/Linux is in fact GNU. Linux is not part of the operating system itself, but is the kernel that is not covered by the naming system of an operating system as defined by common sense.

Many users run operating systems such as Windows, OSX, and a variant of BSD yet do not use a cumbersome naming system that includes the kernel, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, GNU has been the exception to this for no reason and has just been called "Linux" for no good reason, and many others use the insane, cumbersome term "GNU/Linux", mostly because the GNU project doesn't want you to think that Linux is a part of GNU.

There really is a Linux, and it's not part of GNU, but it's a kernel, and no one really specifies using it. GNU is the OS; the actual base system you interact with, and is useful with any compatible kernel; it can function with many different kernels such as GNU Mach or even kFreeBSD, so the whole system should only specify the kernel when it matters, because all these kernels are really irrelevant regarding GNU.

> appease Stallmans narcissism
What gave you the idea that he's narcissistic?
> if he wants credit for his work
Which is quite understandable.
> he should let it speak for itself
Because that works so well for proprietary products that never have to resort to advertising, aggressive marketing and lawsuits to get people to buy their shit and willingly give up their freedom.
> not shoehorn a reference to it in front of a common label.
This """common label""" was only applied to the system by journalists with no interest in software freedom and without a clue about the system because the Linux kernel was at the time the newest part of the OS and thus the headline eye catcher. In fact, the GNU system had existed for years before the Linux kernel was "shoehorned" into it; if anything, the fact that we call the OS GNU/Linux now is a compromise in favor of Torvalds.
> open source model is superior to "free" software
How is it superior? It restricts the end user and promotes oppression.
> which locks down the end users choice with their own system
What does that even mean? Under the GPL the end user can at any point in time change any part of his Free system if he so chooses, or have someone else to change it for him. He can then distribute the improved version to everyone that wants it. Alternatively, he can find the improved version someone else already made and install it. Compare with open source, nobody but the original author can distribute versions of the software so if the dev goes under or just can't be arsed to fix his program, every single end user has to change his own system and can't just give his friends the fixed version.

You know, I quite enjoy making pastas addressing the trolls and most frequently made "mistakes" people new to the scene make. It's not like the navy seals pasta which is admittedly funny but serves no purpose; the interjection pasta and now the open source / free software pasta are meant to educate as well as entertain with their wording and the images of RMS they evoke. I'm dumb and new to Linux.
I finally learned i3 is the way to go but looking at the rice threads also made me learn...I want it to look fucking sexy.

I managed to [xfce+i3-gaps] with this guide:
http://feeblenerd.blogspot.com/2015/11/pretty-i3-with-xfce.html

Now the problem is...I found yabar: https://github.com/geommer/yabar

I've tried to install it two ways: using a software manager that pulled it off the AUR (tried both the yabar and yabar-git it listed, not at the same time) and the git-clone/sudo make line. It puts it on my computer and I see it's executable but it doesn't run. I've tried turning off xfce-panel/settings, turning off just xfce-panel and seeing if yabar runs...and it just won't. Is the config of i3 conflicting stopping it from running? Am I just installing it wrong? Something to do with xfce being on the system first?

I just want yabar to run...I've be playing with it for about a day or two and just felt like I need some help now. I am using Manjaro if it helps...since you know Linux baby and all.

I've used linux before in the past but I'm kinda wanting to put it on my laptop.

Only real issue is it has optimus. I want to use it for 3d modeling and coding for the most part.

Tired of windows and I wanna dual boot to do work mostly in linux.

I was also recommended mint but I heard it blocks updates?
>>
So I have this problem: Almost every dns request that it's made fails the first time, apparently because my ISP does not support ipv6, so I disabled it through
/etc/sysctl.conf

But it randomly reactivates itself, maybe when waking up the machine after a suspension, which means I constantly have to issue
sysctl -p

Anyone knows how to prevent this?
>>
>>55287123
It's not a real issue that it has Optimus, simply disable it on your BIOS so that your NVIDIA GPU is always on. Then you can either use the Nouveau open source drivers or the propietary official NVIDIA ones

You could mess around with Bumblebee to get Optimus working but I wouldn't recommend it.

Mint is a good newbie OS. It's based on Ubuntu LTS. It however does by default delay or block certain updates from upstream until they are patched by the Mint team, to ensure compatibility with their distro. You can disable this default behavior and get any and all updates you want though. It's also been criticized because their website was compromised for like one day in February of this year and their ISO was replaced by a backdoored ISO. However they were quick to respond to this, kept the community updated and the security was taken more seriously from then on.

I can't comment on BSD because frankly I've never used it, nor do I plan to, really

Before you make the switch, make sure you will have software to work on Linux. Do you use Blender, or what? If not, could you make the switch to an open source alternative?

And also, you can dualboot with Windows but consider if it's really worth it. I'm more of a "go big or go home" kinda guy. Dualbooting gives you some annoying quirks (like the system clocks of Windows and Linux disagreeing, so you have to tell Windows to use UNIX time with a short registry edit - still annoying), and besides ask yourself if you're really going to use both OS's or if you would be better served with one.

For example on my work laptop I only use Debian, but on my desktop at home I dualboot Debian with a small Windows partition for like 8 games. And I only go on Windows for those games, absolutely everything else is done on Debian.
>>
>>55287248
>>55287123
(and I should mention, those 8 games aren't compatible on Linux - all the other ones I play on Linux. I've been too lazy to attempt a GPU-passthrough but that's totally doable as well)
>>
>>55287248
I will still need windows for very specific apps. I will basically only be running it for short and rare tests so I'll keep it on there just for that. Otherwise I'm not going to be using it for anything that isn't a game or something like that.

I have substance painter which now supports linux and blender so I should be fine.

I do use 3ds max and maya as well. I know maya has a 64 bit version on windows and 3ds max has been tested compatible with wine.
>>
>Start installing openSUSE Leap onto laptop
>Configure my wireless internet connection three times throughout the process
>It continues to say it isn't configured

The only warning it gave me was the lack of a host name, which I took care of. It was able to find my network and put the key in. Should I just connect my laptop to the router with an ethernet cable for the setup, then configure the wireless connection after everything else is set up?

(I accept that there's likely some obvious thing I'm missing - I've only used Ubuntu and its derivatives up until now but I want to move away from that)
>>
>>55287319
Upon further looking, maya has native linux support so I think I should be fine for the most part with my workflow now.
>>
>>55287322
I've never tried openSUSE so I can't help you too specifically, but yeah, maybe try an ethernet cable for now to get through the install and then tinker around to get the wi-fi working after it's done.

>>55287348
>>55287319
Wonderful! that's great then

If you're interested in having finer control over things than you would on Mint or Ubuntu, maybe look into trying Debian Testing/Sid (since you said you've used Linux before). It might require some extra reading and configuring, but it's really really nice when you have it set up.

If not, Ubuntu or Mint are great too
>>
>>55287399

I don't know what distros to get.

Here's my situation:
I'm a decently competent linux user already, I've installed Gentoo and such. I have a work laptop (my personal laptop, but I'm using it for work because work can't get me a computer yet) and a home laptop. The home laptop is a high power gaymen laptop with absolutely monsterous specs for the time I bought it. The work laptop is a first gen acer chromebook.

I want to minimize bloat on both, but I also want to keep their environments somewhat synced. I also want maximum gaymen power on the home laptop (NVIDIA GPU obviously).

Since I don't really need much for the work laptop and I can't get on the company network with it anyway (using my phone's data), I plan to make and update a liveusb and boot off that.

So which distros should I be looking at here? Strongly considering Arch for the home laptop at the moment just due to the NVIDIA AURs, but compiling a system with USE flags just for the chromebook might make things run smoother.

Or am I just overthinking this?

>>

Literally any. It's capable enough.
Source: I have Debian Sid on a T420

Think on what you want to use Windows for and what you want to use Debian for, and resize your Windows partition accordingly to make room for Debian.

You will have to edit a registry thing in Windows to make it keep UNIX time, otherwise you'll get an annoying warning saying that the hardware time is in the future when booting into the other OS. This is easy to do.

I'd encourage you to only get Debian on it, but if you really must dualboot, then on with it

Flip a coin. They're the same shit pretty much.

what you want to do is install windows FIRST, use advanced partitioning to reserve a partition for debian, then install debian later. Windows' installer likes to erase your boot entries for linux, or if you're not using UEFI, it'll just erase the MBR entirely. It's kind of a cunt that way.

>>
>>55288727
Check if your T420 has UEFI enabled. I think mine does

If it does, install Windows in UEFI mode (or does win 7 lack that? I forget)

Oh, well then just do a clean Windows install, and when prompted to choose partitions for it, delete all of them and remake them with sizes you feel are appropiate. Leave the other unallocated big chunk of space after the Windows thing.

Then when you install Debian, partition up that unallocated chunk into a / (root) partition, a swap partition and a /home partition. Whichever it is, UEFI or MBR, your boot info will get saved in the partition created by Windows so it can start GRUB.

On second thought, that's not a very good idea, since you'd have to be holding the key the moment the X session starts, at the end of the boot process.

If you want a fire-and-forget kind of setup and you're not scared of fiddling around GRUB's configuration, you could use GRUB's keystatus command to conditionally add a custom boot argument, which you could then look for in your custom X session.

Boot args can be read from /proc/cmdline btw.

Alternatively, you could do the same thing but with different GRUB menu entries for GNOME and i3.

You should probably try this kind of stuff in a VM first, and always keep a live CD on hand in case you screw it up.

What's the /g/ recommended text-based browser? I like w3m because of the mouse support but it's pretty much abandonware and it has KDE conflicts

Getting shitty read/write speeds. They max out at 2M/s when its sata3 6.
There are no buffer i/o errors and smart shows nothing out of the ordinary.
What do

I've looked through it but can't find anything. Maybe I've missed it, though.

i just put a 1080p screen in my 12.5" laptop and everything is just a little too small. i tried switching to the hidpi mode but it makes everything big as fuck like it's meant for 4k or something. also tried scaling the font up which is fine but i'd like to make the panel and everything a little bigger.

is there a way to just scale everything up like 25%? i'm using cinnamon on manjaro

You need to edit your xft-settings.sh to change the dpi you want

I got a free t400 from work today. I am currently Librebooting it.

Now I will have a libre x200 and t400. I think my t500 is libreboot compatible as well.

can you copy and paste yours here? i didn't have an xft-settings.sh file so i need to make one i guess

unless you're logging, there's no reason to use -v and -h on a non-interactive job
besides that, that's just fine for a simple mirror
if you want a bit of compression, consider making the backup drive btrfs with zlib compression enabled

I'm running i3 on arch, and I just installed cinerella to edit videos. When I open it, it takes up all my monitors, and freezes input (can't move mouse, mod+shift+q and ctrl+alt+f{2-6} do nothing)

Deciding partitioning scheme. Any recommendations? I have 45 GB of disk space, dual-booting along your preffered botnet SO. I have another NTFS partition for my files. Was wondering if I could put /home on that partition or I'd have to change filesystem. Also, I will be able to change partition sizes after the installation, right?
>>
>>55294349
fartpad x201, integrated intel GPU supports only openGL 2.1, which it turns out precludes me from doing 99.99% of the things i would be doing while my desktop rig was alive

>I have another NTFS partition for my files. Was wondering if I could put /home on that partition
i wouldn't recommend it, NTFS doesn't support unix permissions (which might break some things), plus the performance isn't as great as a native filesystem since ntfs is supported by FUSE, not the kernel
>I will be able to change partition sizes after the installation, right?
yes

you should at least be using snes9x/next, zsnes is not a very accurate emulator, it's main advantage was that it was fast... in the 90's

>you should at least be using snes9x/next, zsnes is not a very accurate emulator, it's main advantage was that it was fast... in the 90's
i'm mostly using it because it was in the official repo, and because it's kind of nostalgia-inducing, from when i used to use it... in the 90's
>>
>>55294403
Can I move /home after the installation process, or reassign it to another partition? Was thinking of changing filesystem to fat or something that can be understood by linux and windows to make it a shared partition. Thank you for the help.

Freedom is the ability to do whatever with the source, so yes, if that's what you want.

The reason Stallman had such a hard time coming up with a synonym for his "freedom" (and why he couldn't find one in the English language and had to go for "muh libre") is that the way he uses "freedom" is really the opposite of the actual meaning of freedom.

Fortunately, "libre" is free of connotations for English speakers so he was able to pretend it fit.

tldr freedom = "do whatever the fuck you want" and GPL != "do whatever the fuck you want" ergo GPL != freedom

Yeah, but obviously back up because partition stuff is always sketchy.

Does anyone know what all software Ubuntu Minimal comes with? Is it just terminal and drivers like Arch, or does it come with stuff like a wifi daemon?

I do not want to have to deal with uninstalling unity and all the shit like libreoffice that comes with ubuntu.
>>
>>55294928
I can't speak for Ubuntu desu but Debian minimal had the necessary stuff for WiFi so I would assume Ubuntu minimal would too.
