hello pals
thinking about getting my first, what do you think about this one

It looks elegant and has a wrist rest!
also which switches for min-maxing gaming and programming, it's true that browns can click faster if you abuse the tactile feedback

Painting it is a bad idea, it'd probably peel in no time. Unicomp used to sell Industrial cases and black IBM badges so you used to be able to buy a standard SSK and swap the internals to a new case. Unfortunately they lost the molds for it.

if you do it right it will last, however there's a better option than straight painting

use vinyl dye. You spray it on and it actually dyes the plastic and past the surface, so even if it gets a nick or scratch here or there the colour will still look fine.
>>
>>55274436
Not too bad desu, it used to be an endurapro but the trackpoint got in the way when typing and really pissed me off so I pried it out. The ultra classics / endurapros are a bit more solid than the classics but still doesn't compare to an original IBM or Lexmark.

The feel of the switches is pretty much the same so if you want the nice case colours and similar feel to an original then go ahead and get one.
>>
>>55274468

do you have to boil it for that? I'd be worried about the plastic warping
>>
>>55274468
That might be worth trying but I'd personally rather just buy an original industrial as I'm shit when it comes to anything DIY.
Besides you have to worry about getting the right badges for it. Also you're going to have to remove the date sticker on the back to dye the plastic.

I don't really get the appeal of mechanical keyboards.

Just going by what I've felt from test models at electronics stores, sure they're definitely springier, but I don't think they would feel any "better" than my beloved dome board at home.

Although I don't browse /g/ much this general seems like it only really uses keyboards for typing, I can see why people here think a 10key is redundant, I just find more use out of it than most

Workflow example: x hangs again, and you need to switch ttys. You flip the toggle on the right side of the keyboard and, holding the fn key with your thumb, depress the comma, control, and q keys. I got a Logitech G510 as a gift and I hate it. I don't need these stupid gamer keys or the shitty numpad or even the home/delete/whatever above the arrow keys. It all takes up so much space. I do 100% of my typing on 40% of the keyboard. It's so cramped, laptop keyboards are more comfortable. I'm not joking.

Not to mention, why the fuck would a keyboard need heaphones/microphone jacks? And the keys are made of such cheap plastic that they almost feel greasy. They are about as satisfying to push as your standard Walmart keyboard.

I want a keyboard with the width of a G510 but only 60-80% form factor. Maybe I need to fall for the two-piece ergo keyboard meme.

After two years, my Ducky Shine III is broken.

The bottom row doesn't work consistently. I'm guessing I may have either leaked liquod on it (can't remember when, because it just suddenly stopped working one day) or pressed the keys too hard, resulting in damaging the lines on the circuit board.

This was expensive, and was supposed to last me 10+ years.

Some people argue that blues make it much harder to quickly double tap a key compared to linear switches like reds and blacks because the activation point for blues is just under the sharp tactile bump.

I don't play games often so am nowhere near the skill level where that difference could possibly matter, so I can't personally say if it's more than conjecture.

>>55281820
You mean Topre switches?

I quite like clears, but you can't really compare Topre to cherry clears, or to just about any other mechanical switch. Topre is a rubberdome, and hence has the characteristics of a rubberdome, feels really nice, but certainly far different from traditional mechanical switches.

Here's the most of a comparison I can make:
Topre is tactile throughout the entire keypress, you'll see this if you look at the force curve. There's a buildup in force required right at the start, and then the dome collapses and you pretty much inevitably bottom out. It's a very comfortable feeling.

Cherry clears are linear, then there's a tactile bump, and after this the weight goes up really fast and you reach almost 100g at bottom-out. This lends itself to not bottoming out very much, they're amongst my favorite cherries, but I wouldn't recommend them for things such as FPS where you have to constantly keep keys pressed down.

In terms of feel I prefer Topre.

>>55281853

The magicforce is very nice. I'll have to troubleshoot and fix mine since either the firmware or the hardware are fucking up terribly somewhere. If you want cherry clears in it, you can get a DIY set on aliexpress, almost snatched one myself, but I think I'll be getting the Tada68 after all.

get clears or greys
clears are like blues minus the annoying clicking, tactile greys are like greens minus the annoying clicking
they're the preferred switches of typists

>>55281604
try em first, I didn't like them. They're pretty much just better rubber domes, they get a lot of hype for some strange reason but it was pretty underwhelming.
>>
>>55281908
Uh, if i were to get a magicforce i think i'll just take a brown switch instead. DIYing/Switching to clears takes too much time.

What problem are you getting and how did you fixed it?

It's a DIY kit, all you'd have to do is pop the clears into the plate, put the PCB on top, solder the switches and then screw everything together, would probably take less than an hour.

As to what problems I'm having:
The whole number row doesn't work
The super keys on the bottom row don't work
The moment I plug it in it starts spamming the keys on the second column (1qaz)

But other than that it's perfectly fine really
>>
Test, today is the day that, I do have to get used to this retarded position of the delete key, but I have to say these switches are quite nice for light typing though I fee like my, that's better, left arm wasn't quite getting enough support. Oh yeah, cherry mx clears with o-rings. I actually have legends on my keyboard now, but I got so used to just fingering around until I find a key in the event that I don't that I don't even bother looking down. kind of a waste of all the fancy lights. would be nice if it were TKL, but at least the numpad replaces the trackpad that doesn't work really well on wangblows anyway. I have to say, these PBT caps together with the o-rings do give it quite a nice dampened sound.

Feels fucking huge though.

And I didn't fix it, going to do that once I have time in August.

Ahh, i see. Well i'm really hoping that i does not have that problem on my keyboard later..

I think i'll search the market at my place first, and if i didn't find those fc660m fast enough i'll just stick to magicforce.
Thanks for your answer, mate.

>>55282259
>Well i'm really hoping that i does not have that problem on my keyboard later
I kind of doubt you will. The magicforce I've got is handwired, so either the TMK firmware or the hardware is fucking up. For the short time that I was using it with the stock switches and the PCB, it worked absolutely fine.

Good luck with your search, hope you find a keyboard you like.
>>
>>55281805
With or without legends?
Without, you should check out ukkeycaps' store once it's back up. I got a beautiful high quality set of PBT blank keycaps in grey/beige from there, but I don't know if they're still available.
If you want legends, you're probably gonna have a hard time.

Hi /mkg/ I posted in the wrong thread.

Guys, where do I find a job that includes just typing stuff. I just want to type stuff and get paid for it. I currently work as a software tester, and it's pretty fun, but my dream job would be to just type shit for hours.

Data entry or scribe.

Courts had typists
You can check if that's still an option.

Is it possible to fit a 5 mm LED inside the Gateron switch?
I want RGB LEDs, but I can't seem to find any that would be 3 mm.

Why do people shill Gateron? They can't possibly be better than Cherry MX, can they? The tada68 looks good, but I'm skeptical of the switches.
>>
>>55284516
You can never be sure until you try it yourself.
>>
>>55284516
Cherry is overpriced, gateron offers a very similar product at a far lower price, and they're a whole lot smoother than cherry switches.

If only they made them with black housing.
Look at the picrelated all-black beauty, it wouldn't look as good with white Gaterons.

pcb flaps in the wind i have not seen this before
>>
>>55287497
>>55287554
That's not a PCB, that's a membrane. And unless the stems are cherry mx compatible or something of the sort, you can't do a whole lot in terms of keycaps either.

Apart from the obvious things such as painting the stock caps and whatnot.
>>
>>55287579
you're right, took me a sec to distinguish between the small pcb in pic and the membrane.
i exposed the underside of one of the keys, is that enough to determine compatibility with anything or do i need to take a photo of a removed key? taking a big shit atm
>>
>>55287639
I can already tell you that it'll most likely not be compatible, but no, what you're looking for is a top view. Take off a keycap and check if you see a cross or plus sign like thing on the stem.
>>
>>55287654
nah i already know it doesn't have that cross connector, you can see in my first pic a missing dome, what is exposed is the stem of the cap (hollow rectangle)
thanks anyway, just going to use it as a nostalgic piece until i organise a unique setup

found it at a thrift store in mint condition for $3, knew it was rubber but it looks great

Which are the best Gateron Switches?
I don't really have a preference, but I hear their linears are really good, so which one of them should I go for?

Also, is there any functional difference between full frosted white and clear top black bottom versions of Gateron? Picrelated.
>>
>>55287991
In my opinion, clears.

They feel like you're typing on air.

The black-bottom-clear-top gaterons are just from the newer line of production, milky ones are older ones.
>>
>>55288595
Thanks, I'll consider clears.

Ducky One vs Ducky Shine 5? I'm looking for a backlit mech, full-size, brown switches. RGB not necessary. There's also the Deck Hassium which looks kinds nice. Budget around $100–$150. I'm aware the DS5 is about $165.

I was playing around with damping the upstroke noise and airbrushed a couple gateron housings with black enamel. No noticeable difference in noise, but neither was there a difference in feeling. Worth a shot if you're dead set on black housings.
