If you want a career in Windows engineering, that's it.

In most IT workplaces I've been, Macbooks or linux laptops are used. In my current and previous programming role, macbooks were provided, linux laptops you're allowed to bring, but Windows is out of the question

Video Games. SteamOS, a Linux platform, is utter garbage ridden with bugs and the whole Steam Machine meme is coming to an end.

They just were not profitable for Valve, but good news for them, they did pretty well when it came to the controllers.

I cannot think of any other Linux based operating systems that is compatible with a lot of the games today.

lol

There is exactly one option for anybody who doesn't want to use windows. It's called unix. There hasn't been a viable third option for 15 years at least.

So here's a valid excuse to be using windows, if you don't like unix, it is literally the only alternative.
>>

Your average person that has a career, is educating themselves, has kids, a family, a wife, bills, hobbies, ect, doesn't have time to nerd out and learn how to code and download these shitty operating systems that make everything ten times more complicated, look like shit, and can't even play video games. If somebody comes out with something that has appeal outside the nerd computer science niche then maybe I will consider switching but until then nope.
>>
>>55274494
With a large majority of other mainstream hobbies you can actually get something out of them (with sports you get more fit, with reading you can gain useful knowledge). You cannot gain *anything* from computer games.
>>
>>55274558
wrong

but don't take my word for it, do some research
>>
>>55274558

I agree. Video games are contributing to the degeneracy of our culture and young's men inability to even interact with women.

Honestly though, the days when I played Halo with my friends on my xbox was a lot more fun then playing on my PC in my underwear alone. Video games are fucking stupid anyway and a huge waste of precious time and money. People are so pathetic they would rather live in a virtual world then explore reality.
>>
>>55274558
>With a large majority of other mainstream hobbies you can actually get something out of them
Not really true.

>with reading you can gain useful knowledge
Depends entirely on what you're reading.

And it's irrelevant anyway because only a miserable soulless drone is incapable of appreciating a hobby for its own sake.

If you think doing anything that doesn't "get you something" is a waste of time, then toil away endlessly until you die for all I care.

I'm comfortable with it, know 7 like the back of my hand

>>
>>55274769
Can't. It's too addictive, and you're addicted too, calling yourself a "functional human being" doesn't make it otherwise.

What do you think would get a more negative response out in the "real world" from "real people", "I play video games" or "I post on 4chan"? You know the fucking answer. You can't shame people for playing video games when just being here is a hundred times more shameful.

It's just too fucking funny. "I post about linux on the 4chan technology board, and YOU'RE a loser!"

never really used linux.
had a business PC that was the size of a normal book. tiny. and very under-powered.
perfect to be used as a NAS/HTPC.
was a little cautious over using Windows because it needed to be on 24/7 and connected to the internet while being un-monitored for weeks at a time.
decided to try out a simple linux distro.
linux mint or something like that.
installed it.
wifi didn't work.
changed the settings until i got it to run.
no big deal.
no already activated network sharing folder.
i had to download samba.
installed it.
had to know how to share files.
took a half-hour to get it to show on my windows PC.
press play on my windows PC.
video cuts off 3/4ths of the way.
file-size limitation = 3.5gb.
.......
re-install windows.
install wifi drivers.
install everything i needed.
now i have
plex
nzbget
nextpvr
ftp
services installed.
>>
>>55274809

Yeah, I think (at this moment) dual booting Linux and Windows is the best choice if you care about video games. Use Linux for everything, and only boot into Windows to play games that aren't Linux compatible.

I say (at the moment) because hopefully game devs will trend towards making games for Linux instead of Windows over time.

People don't have time to learn how to use randomOS every month.

How many linux OS versions are out there?

/g/ can't even decide which is best.

It's the reason why apple is superior to android. You can take it out of the box and it instantly works. With android you gotta download custom roms, root, etc. Why would people do extra work that violates warranty when they could just get something that works out of the box.

Windows just gets the job done. It's that simple

.in any way competing with microsoft

hah, no. they appeal to entirely different markets enough that they never really need to worry about each other. Apple will keep selling macos to hipsters and 'trendy' people, and microsoft will keep selling windows to everyone else, in addition to businesses.

neither has any real competition
>>
>>55272196

Actually, it feels there are even less options out there today.

Maybe during the days of WinXP when Ubuntu was making the rounds, things looked promising for the desktop.

These days, its worse, when it comes to an alternative.

Linux has been so divided with a bazillion forks, it just absolutely terrified anyone away from even attempting to use it on the desktop. Not to mention, ZERO commercial devs want to develop hardware or software for it because then they have to provide support for the never ending flavors of linux.
>>
>>55274188
Computers are not designed for any specific task. The same computer that can be used for playing video games can also be used as a server, text editor, web browser, or even just a calculator. The point is that PCs are general use devices, not designed for anything specific.

the fact is 99% of computer users don't need any of the 'features' that linux or osx offers and the larger software base for windows is a good enough reason to use it.
i have a question, why should i use linux or osx when i dont program or video edit or photo edit?

I know that I shouldn't agree with that, as people just have different interests etc, but honestly, whenever I try to play games, I just get so instantly bored with it, that I absolutely don't understand people's obsession with them.
