Are screen protectors necessary in 2016 when most (read: any worth buying) phones come with Corning™ Gorilla® Glass© screens?

Specifically I mean in preventing scuffs and scratches. I don't care about shock absorption from drops because I'm not a retard and I am able to use my $600 device without smashing it onto concrete accidentally.
>>
>>55268596
The shitty feeling they give off made them not worth it in 2010
>>
>>55268665
They have glass ones these days though.
>>
Should I wait for the next Nexus gens or just get the 6P? I don't play any games or do anything that NEEDS the latest hardware
>>
>>55268596
Depends on the phone, but I'd say yes. For some retarded reason, the glass bullbles out from the bezel on most phones now, so if you drop it like 2 feet, the screen is taking a direct hit.
>>
>>55268682
Didn't know that, actually sounds decent. Kind of redundant to put glass over glass.
>>
>>55268713
>Kind of redundant to put glass over glass.

Still easier to replace an $8 glass screen protector if it gets scratched by a grain of sand in your pocket than to replace a whole device or live with the scratch on the screen itself.
>>
>>55268596
Having no protector sucks though. My S7 Edge's display doesn't repel oils as effectively as my current plastic protector.
>>
>>55268596
Even pocket sand can scratch gorillion glass.
>>
>>55268596
>Are screen protectors necessary in 2016

To whoever asked me about my priv last thread here is my answer.

>Have you upgraded to Marshmallow?
No AT&T hasn't released it yet because they are slow as fuck at updates for anything other than iphone

>How's the heat issue?
It can get pretty warm but only when I'm streaming 4g or running a very unoptimzed emulator. The back of the phone is very thin so that also plays a role in feeling the warmth.

>It's so close to my dream phone, but apparently the keyboard is a little shit for BlackBerry standards
It's not blackberry's best keyboard but I can say that having owned many phones with keyboards it is probably the best I've had. It feels pretty close to the classic's keyboard.

>and it gets hot.
When the phone comes out of the box it needs all the blackberry services and apps updated as some where causing the processor to max out and that where you here about battery drain and privs to hot to touch. Now many people didn't figure this out because they don't automatically show up in the play store as needing to be updated. As soon as I updated those I was golden. Only gets warm when on 4g streaming and battery has yet to run out before the end of the day.

>Plus the SoC is a little old, compared to the hella gainz from the 820
Eh true but you can buy the most top of the line chip and it will be old news in 6 months so that game is an always a losing battle.

At the end of the day is it perfect? Definitely not but if you want a big beautiful touchscreen and keyboard it's really the only player on the field.

Most people will hate all over this phone for some reason or another but just remember that the average poster in this thread still has a bed time.

No root available yet, maybe never. It would be a knock on blackberry if someone finds a way to do it. It doesn't bother me. >SD820 newer less housefirey cpu

I'd go for the Z5 unless you really care about the camera.

Z5 is going to be better for battery life. I'd rather have a phone that just lasts for a day and is one solid brick than a phone with a flimsy mechanism that I have to use every day because the battery doesn't last a full day.

I mean, how are you even supposed to charge your second battery anyways.

battery life in phonearena's tests was
7 hours for z5
5hours50mins for g5

so more than an hour less, probably because the screen resolution of the g5 negates any improvement you would have gotten off the newer cpu.

The real problem with the g5 for me is that it just looks and feels awful and cheap in real life. The battery life alone is not necessarily the deciding factor.

And I don't know what you do with your phone, but I don't think you're going to feel like your phone is too slow if you have a sd810.
>>
>>55271082
Thank you so much for answering my questions, anon.
The heat issue has apparently been fixed more with Marshmallow, but still looking for a consensus on that.
Marshmallow should be available to you, though, at least in the "BlackBerry Beta Zone"

It's definitely still a phone I'm considering, but I'll see what they have to announce next month. It seems like a steal for $300, though.
>>
>>55272680
Beta zone is now closed for marshmallow unfortunately. For $300 I'd say it's worth it.
>>
Just picked up a s7 edge earlier today.

Still early but liking it so far. Never had a Samsung phone because I loathed TouchWiz but it seems much improved. Coming from a nexus 6 and nexus 5 before that, the camera is pretty impressive

The edge is a meme, makes it hard to hold without a case. Could do without it but wanted the bigger screen and battery.

Speaker is awful but oh well. Also it's a SD820 so no root.

Most expensive phone I have ever owned, I guess time will tell if it will be worth it.

My question isn't about phones, but carriers. Who's the best no-contract carrier for cheap in the New England area?

Pros of Virgin Mobile: Decent LTE coverage, $35/mo, unlimited text, more call minutes than I'll ever use. I'm on wi-fi most of the time so I never really hit the data limit.
Cons: Locked-sim phones only, most come bogged down with bloat-ware. Extremely limited phone selection, many are outdated, slow updates to things like OS. I ended up buying a moto G 2015 just a couple months ago because it was either that, samsung Galaxy J7, or htc Desire 626s, Galaxy S7, or iPhone.

I want a carrier that can match Virgin's (Sprint's) speeds/ coverage, at a decent price, that lets me use whatever phone I want.

okay, so i gotta replace both screen and housing on an iPhone 6

Going with Apple's repair is pointless since i don't have warranty, or any proof of purchase

The only reason i want to do that is really worn exterior and severe backlight bleed, so i figured i'd replace them myself as it doesn't look too difficult

The only concern i have is getting decent quality parts, mostly the screen. How do i not get fucked over by TERRIBLE chinkshit? Is ordering it from proper source like ifixit worth it, or will i be fine with some generic, top-rated ebay/amazon lcd?

>LG V10
Phone's huge, but still comfortable to hold and sue. Can still talk on it like a phone and not look like an ass like with other Phablets
Second screen is super convenient if you like music, can switch tracks with needing to unlock the phone. Other than that there's not much else.
Between my Iphone 6 and G2 this phone has the fastest start up and app switching, just click and the app pops up. Only big games with tons of resources take time to load.
The fingerprint scanner is instant, no delay.
Battery is inconsistent. Someday it just drains, other days I could be using it heavy without even reaching 50%. On Average I can play Xcom for about 5 hours on max brightness before the battery is dead, which blows the Iphone out of the water.
Even though this phone has 64 gbs of storage you need an SD card. Fills up quick and data management remains archaic.
Video playback and quality is amazing. No frame stuttering or video rips.
Camera is just the tits. More convenient than my D500 to lug around, aside form a lack of real filters or editing tools it's super easy to take field pictures and shove them off to Photoshop for editing. Wish it had more options and for a manual mode it's super sparse.

Overall: The V10 is a great phone, the real downside is the price. The phone is really expensive, I got it for free with Verizon for my upgrade, but it's nearly 30 a month if you're going to try paying it off. Compared to my nightmarish time with a Iphone 6 it's a breath of fresh air, really happy I went back to LG. 8-9/10

I was weighing up between the LG G4, Blackberry Priv (299USD) and Nexus 6p and ended up getting the Redmi Note 3 b/c poor. Is it just me or is CM ever worth flashing? I've tried it on my HTC One XL and its always been unusable shit. I'd like to swap from MIUI eventually but I've been put off it.

You get used to it, I switched from a X (2013) to a G4 and after a couple of weeks everything was back to normal. Only thing I can complain about big phones are the DPI settings and the giant UI for giant people looks like manufacturers think that I need my keyboard to take 1/2 of the 5.5' screen. Pretty sure you can change your DPI with-in MIUI rom so it might not affect you.

So I won't go into details, but I got a Galaxy S7 Edge for free no contract so I went and switched from my Nexus 5.

How do I make the phone less Samsung and more Nexus? I'm a complete noob. My nexus 5 "just werked" so I had no complaints. But the Samsung UI is so fucking god awful and all the shortcuts I use frequently are now a chore to get to.

Is there anyway I could install stock android on this thing?

I think this is the best place for it.

however, i dont want to pay a fuckload for it as i suck.

are there any old phones with good styluses or something asian market made that could be used for drawing? Im looking for pressure sensitivity.
>>
>>55282162
Only the Note series offers acceptable styluses on phones.
Get a Note 1 for like $50, fast enough for most tasks and with a 3rd party Wacom pen (Wacom Bamboo feel stylus or ThinkPad X61t pen worked best imo), you get very decent sketching performance too.
>>
>>55282148
You can't install stock android. The US version has a locked bootloader and the international version doesn't have the proper documentation

How to make it feel like stock:

- Download all of the google apps: keyboard, dialer, etc.

- Install a material design theme from the samsung theme store

- Install good lock from the samsung app store
in the goodlock settings:
>routines, default
>>>choose neutral color scheme, drag darkest one to the far left
>>>turn off app tray on notification screen
>lock screen
>>>turn off all options
>advanced
>>>turn off all options
notification bar and quick settings should look like stock now

- install nova launcher. In the app drawer settings, go to hide apps and hide every samsung app.

That's as close to stock as you can get

Goals for my rooted 5x (if possible of course):

> Longer battery life
> Faster phone
> As much ads removed from YouTube, apps, etc
> To find the simplest way to update the latest security update (ie 2016 August Update)

I am new to the whole root process-- reason why I used the Nexus Toolkit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyJq_Ta8Y9Y)

I am very unfamiliar as to what Custom Recovery, ROMs, and Kernels are and a lot of guides out there are saying "install this next" but I do not really know where to start and in what order. Am I on Stock ROM? Do I not have a Custom Recovery?

Once I verified my root and SuperSU / BusyBox Free installed, what are my next steps? Considering what I want out of my 5x, any suggestions what I should do?

Appreciate any advice other than to kill myself!

2016 Nexus 5:

>The device features a 5-inch 1080p (440PPI) display running on Quad-core 2.0GHz 64-bit processor with 4GB RAM, 2770mAh Battery and 32GB Internal Storage. It also has a 12MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, a USB-C type Bluetooth 4.2, a bottom-firing speaker and a top-mounted headphone jack.

>While the processor was not yet named, Slash Gear assumes that it is a Qualcomm Snapdragon model of some sort. Reports also speculate that the device could almost replace the Nexus 5X in terms of price and size from a 5.2-inch display to a slightly more standard 5-inches display.
