Basically, if you didn't have play services, your battery would be kill because each app would need to get its own messages independently. Play services let's all messages for your phone (app updates, notifications, communications) to get bundled together so your phone only has to poll Google rather than 1001 different servers.

my iphone 5 running ios 9.3.2 doesn't have this problem.
