When I'm compiling ports on FreeBSD the process gets interrupted with these ncurses gui prompts (pic related). Sometimes compilation takes hours and should be done unattended. Is there a way to avoid these prompts, maybe some flag to accept the defaults?
>>

Welcome to FreeBSD.

WHY WOULD ANYONE WNAT 2 DO AN UNATTENDED INSTALL??????
Don't you like how SUPERIOR the ports system is to portage you luddite? I bet you use GAHNOO lincuck!!1

just type BATCH=YES before the make install command.

I think make config-recursive can also allow you to do all this before actually installing.

gee im not surprised

You have to either disable any options or run config-recursive a dozen times. BSD strong. My favorite part is how freebsdtards constantly shit on portage despite it being lightyears ahead in every department.

Exactly.

But wait, did you know OpenBSD's security was literally the worst of all time according to some blog with the word "troll" in the title?

n00b question: what's the difference between FreeBSD's "Security Advisories" and "Errata Notices"?

and why do they all say:

recompiling the OS for every fucking time you need to install a security patch?!?!

OpenBSDfags everybody. It's also an apt description of their approach to security.

The BATCH=YES approach already explained works, but:

Will show all prompts at the start, then just run all builds..
>>

Oh hey, that's a nice solution, had no idea it existed.
>>
>>55255281
you dont have to compile everything from ports you know. FreeBSD also has a package manager for binaries

thanks. i brought up the question of those gui prompts because i will soon try to compile the kernel and world. it seems you need to recompile the entire os everytime you install a security fix (on non x86 systems). seems pretty retarded.

FreeBSD is really focused on x86/amd64 in general, the other platforms are more like experiments

Set up a virtual machine

So I guess Windows is better because it's even more widely supported than Linux.

I have never done this, and yet again I must point out that saying "KEK NOT AN ARGUMENT XDDD" doesn't shield you from the fact that you're a dumbass. Not a retort, anyway. Also, nothing werks.

Yeah, but Linux dominates niches like infosec, servers, and low-level programming.

can a FreeBSD fag explain what the point is of downloading and applying a patch is, if in order to apply the patch you have to recompile world+kernel? if i already have to download the full world+kernel source (THAT HAS THE VULNERABILITY ALREADY PATCHED) what's the point of downloading the patch separately?

e.g. https://www.freebsd.org/security/advisories/FreeBSD-EN-16:06.libc.asc
>>
>>55259957
There's no point.

I know OpenBSD has a -stable branch which is just the source tree with all the fixes already done, so you just sync up your tree, compile and install. Don't know if FreeBSD has an equivalent.

if you can't understand this than there's no hope for you.

obviously not everything requires you to rebuild the whole os.
sometimes you need to recompile the kernel
most times you just need to recompile a single binary

if you are running i386/amd64 the only reason you would recompile instead of using freebsd-update(8) is if you are running a custom kernel.

Wow, this is actually a thing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentoo/Alt#Gentoo.2FFreeBSD
Gentoo/FreeBSD is a Unix-like operating system developed by Gentoo Linux developers in order to bring Gentoo Linux design, structure, and tools such as Portage and the Gentoo Linux base layout to the FreeBSD operating system. Gentoo's GNU toolchain is used instead of the original FreeBSD one.

That's fucking cool.

You have to draw the line somewhere, dumbass. Linux is favored by some because it's free somewhere and somewhat usable. You are giving up both by using FreeBSD just to be a special snowflake.
