Windows XP was the best OS ever, They should have just kept releasing service packs for it.

There will probably never again be an OS like it again and that's kinda sad.

I don't know what it is about it but the OS is so comfy and the UI was so well designed, The fisher price theme was actually very pleasing and if you didn't like it there were many other themes like zune and xp media center edition.
>>
>>55255121
95 and 98 were both pretty well regarded, but it's similar to the relationship between Vista and 7.

in retrospect, the only real stinker was ME. Everything else was widely-accepted and useful.

I've never used Windows ME. I went from 98 to XP without ever knowing it existed. I honestly didn't know about it till I started visiting this board a few years ago.

What exactly was wrong with ME?
>>
>>55261807
You haven't used Windows 8.1 at all, so let me repeat this for you since you didn't understand it the first time:
>It's important that we remember that Windows 8.1 is not, in fact, Windows 8.
Windows 8.1 is as much an attempt to salvage Windows 8 as 7 was an attempt to salvage Vista.
Or as much of an attempt to salvage 8 as XP was an attempt to salvage Windows Me.

8.1 is a different version of Windows from 8. It isn't a service pack for Windows 8, and it isn't an update to it in any other way, shape, or form. It is effectively "Windows 9".

Microsoft might have offered it for free to Windows 8 users because they acknowledged that Windows 8 was a mistake, but that's a different matter and doesn't change the fact that 8.1 is more than just an update to Windows 8.

And you know what ? 8.1 succeeded where 8 failed. I brought everything that you hold oh so dearly from Windows 7 back that was gone or hard to access in 8. As such, an appropriate description for 8.1 would be "Windows 7 with performance and resource management improvements."

Now of course you're going to parrot the "muh start screen" meme because that's the only thing you know about Windows 8.1. And yeah, sure, it has the start screen.
But did you know that the start screen offers exactly the same workflow as Windows 7's start menu ? And that you can get rid of it if you don't like a frankly insignificant cosmetic change to a thing you spend maybe a few seconds looking at daily ?
No ? Thought so.

>Windows 8 is an improvement on performance from Windows 7

>Windows 8's start screen does not obscure all desktop system applications requiring you to text-search anything you want to do that can't be done with one of their "metro"-style fullscreen apps that obfuscate the desktop.

What the fuck are you even arguing about this for? Do you seriously, unironically prefer using Windows 8.1 over 7 or 10? Because I don't believe that.

I have to work on multiple platforms at work and I know what I'm talking about. I would sooner spend the afternoon investigating a kernel panic than boot Windows 8 again.

These things are completely retarded. You can make them say whatever you want by deciding whether to count 2000, 98SE and 8.1 as separate versions or not or deciding that Microsoft skipped Windows 9 because they were "aware of the cycle." Also, while it's the general consensus that ME, Vista and 8 were the "bad" versions, opinions are pretty mixed on 95, 98, 98SE, 8.1 and 10, so however you make the chart, these threads are always going to be full of pointless bickering.

Evidently you haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about. You may have used Windows 8, but you've made it clear in your post that you've never touched 8.1 in your life.

>>Windows 8.1 is remotely usable because you can tweak it to kinda pretend not to be a shitty phone OS.
Windows 8.1 doesn't do this. Windows 8 did.
>>Windows 8 is an improvement on performance from Windows 7
Yes. Windows 8 did have some performance improvements over 7.
But we're talking about Windows 8.1 here, not Windows 8.
>>Constantly having to switch between the start screen and the desktop every time you want to do something as if launching software had to be a run level of its own is not a terrible workflow hindrance
Except that you don't "switch" between the start screen and the desktop. It functions exactly the same as Windows 10's start menu,
It's a fucking menu that launches applications for you, this one just so happens to be in full screen.
>>Windows 8's start screen does not obscure all desktop system applications requiring you to text-search anything you want to do that can't be done with one of their "metro"-style fullscreen apps that obfuscate the desktop.
Again we're not talking about Windows 8.
But 8.1 allows you to get EVERYTHING done without "metro"-style apps in exactly the same as you would in Windows 7. And the control panel, administrative tools, and what have you, are just as easy to access as they are in 8.
Your desktop applications aren't obscured one bit. They're all right there in the "all applications" menu, which you can set the start screen to open into, skipping the live tiles completely if you don't want to look at them. "Metro"- style apps are strictly optional in 8.1.
