I've never used Windows ME. I went from 98 to XP without ever knowing it existed. I honestly didn't know about it till I started visiting this board a few years ago.

But 8.1 allows you to get EVERYTHING done without "metro"-style apps in exactly the same as you would in Windows 7. And the control panel, administrative tools, and what have you, are just as easy to access as they are in 8.
Your desktop applications aren't obscured one bit. They're all right there in the "all applications" menu, which you can set the start screen to open into, skipping the live tiles completely if you don't want to look at them. "Metro"- style apps are strictly optional in 8.1.
