He'll always be remembered for his contribution. Without him, there probably wouldn't even be open source software and you probably wouldn't get any software for free. He's changed the lives of millions of people in developing countries who cannot afford to pay for Windows licenses. In my opinion, this man has given away more than Bill Gates, by not charging anything to run software. Such altruism is rarely seen these days.
