The basic idea is:
1) Unlock bootloader. This usually wipes your data so back it up.
2) Flash the appropriate TWRP img file to the phone's recovery partition while it is in fastboot mode. You will probably have to use the fastboot command from the Android SDK tools.
3) Use TWRP to install a CyanogenMod zip and a GApps zip (I recommend OpenGapps). Make sure to wipe the data partition because you can't reuse it between MIUI and CM (which would be called a "dirty flash").
4) Set up CyanogenMod and enjoy. If there are any bugs, test thoroughly to figure out what circumstances cause them and then politely let the developer know.

Pros:
1. Good screen.
2. OS updates.
3. Good call speaker.
4. Good camera.
Cons:
1. The loudspeaker isn't bassy at all.
2. The loudspeaker sounds hollow.
3. The loudspeaker isn't very loud.
4. Battery life isn't very good either.
5. Slows down sometimes but not too bad.
I have had this phone for about a month now. I started on Project Fi, then switched to Metro PCS to take advantage of their unlimited LTE plan. Pretty good phone for what I paid. ($249)

We're at the point where basically any phone has a 1080p screen and enough power to do whatever the fuck you need it to. Phone choice hardly matters anymore unless you're actually using your phone for gaming or something (please don't).
The only truly important considerations for your phone are whether or not it has a microSD slot and NFC support. Or if you're actually into taking photos, how nice the camera is might be important.

Have an HTC M8, but I'm getting ready to upgrade to a new phone.
I don't really do much on my phone so what should I get? Only solid requirements are that its a little smaller than an HTC M8 as its just barely too big to hold with one hand comfortably. Also the camera needs to not suck.

Not only is the sensor size too small to have any appreciative low-light performance, but lenses are not interchangeable.
What I'd reccommend is an old Canon 30d or Nikon D40x or even something newer and a new lens if you're too poorfag to buy a Pentax K-50. If you want to go mirrorless, get an EOS M3 or M and a new lens. It isn't the best mirrorless, but it shoots some nice video.
A decade-old DSLR will always outperform a new cameraphone, every single time, in nearly all areas and environments, simply due to sensor size.
note 5 or S7? Moving from IOS dual screening apps seems useful as fuck but I'm not sure if the note is going to be annoyingly big for my pocket(active worklife)
