There's not except if you want to lock yourself into MS's ecosystem by depending on their closed formats and if you want to share all your personal data they'll share with their business partners and government organizations as long they think is in "good faith" with no warrants.

If your system has good driver support there's really no reason not to use Linux if you don't game.

I'm a Macfag 90% of the time, but Ubuntu is actually more polished than Windows these days.

There will be literally no reason to use Ubuntu or any Loonix os once Anniversary update comes with built in Ubuntu.

>>
>>55253845
Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

You've given no actual reasons why it's worse. Pretty much every DE is butt ugly without ricing so don't give aesthetics as a reason.

First of all, I don't give a sweet shit about aesthetics because I'm not a closeted amatuer interior designer. As far as my reasoning for disliking Unity versus Gnome goes, it mainly boils down to not being able to resize and move windows via the keyboard. There are numerous other niggling little details though and I'd suggest you check out some documentation or demonstration videos for the latest Gnome 3. I was a former Unity user and I thought it was great when it first came around. It just hasn't progressed much in the following years.

Many people have criticised Unity in this thread on it being "shit". I'd like to hear some concrete criticism of the current version (as of 16.04) as I personally find little to complain about. Largest being the web search plugin and amazon plugin in dash which can be disabled if wanted. Doing this is frankly much less work than most other DE:s require to set up.

I just hope they don't fuck things up when the switch to Unity 8 and Mir happens. The switch from Gnome2 to Unity was very painful and I guess much of the criticism to Unity comes from that.

I like:
>resizing windows with keyboard (50% left, 50 % right, maximize, minimize)
>virtual desktops and moving between them with keyboard
>rectangle crop select print screen
>current window print screen
>spread windows of current desktops
>spread windows of all desktops
>search through installed gui applications
>search through current application toolbar menus
>launcher on left side to conserve vertical space on small displays with adjustable icon size and optional auto hiding

>>55255061
They've already started it by offering the Ubuntu for Windows. Honestly I think it's great for Linux users as developers no longer have reasons to maintain Windows ports of Linux software. The more people start using Linux software on windows the easier it will become to just abandon Windows for good.

>>55254589
Congrats I hope you'll like it.

If you have 8GB or less memory you should install zram-config for some in-memory compressed swap. I cannot understand why this isn't installed by default.

You can actually install the fonts but they aren't bundled by default due to license issues. You can install a bunch of proprietary tools by installing ubuntu-restricted-extras package or just the fonts by installing ttf-mscorefonts-installer package.

>>
>>55257411
If you're not happy with the games you get from Steam for Linux or need to use any of the Adobe Suite you have good reasons not to use Ubuntu or other Linux distros.

Also:
>Professional level CAD software
>Professional level video editing and related software
>Microsoft Visual Studio
>>
>>55253404

Everyone should switch to Linux once just to properly appreciate windows.

The only mistake you have to avoid is listening to /g/ telling you how you have to replace the default x with y every time you find some part of it is crap. If y was actually better than x, the distro maintainers would have included y instead; y is just shitty in some different way that some random person on the internet is more willing to put up with. And if you do this too much, you start falling for the sunk cost fallacy, thinking the time you spent deciding which shit you're most willing to put up with will be 'wasted' if you go back to windows.
>>
>>55257545
>Professional level CAD software
depends on your area but:

>Microsoft Visual Studio
Not saying it's bad, in fact is very well done but i prefer using tools that works on multiple operative systems and doesn't locks me to microsoft's ecosystem.
