He's noticing you're running a 2.6GHz 2MB cache chip when you can get an 3GHz+ 6MB cache one for a couple bucks (E8400, 8500, 8600). They'd need a board that can support a 1333MHz FSB, though.

Same here but for 7 years. My gpu (GTX 285) finally started to get locked behind modern games with fancy Direct X 11 and 12, but the cpu can still handle them. Haven't upgraded any components once in the entire 7 years of service.

I'm only now thinking of adding more RAM, upgrading the GPU, and possibly getting a better cooler for the cpu. It's a bit sad because I'd like to overclock it to at least 3.5 GHz, but I can't even keep a stable 3.2 because I'm using the stock cooler so I'm stuck at 2.67 until I can either find a good, low-profile cooler or get a new case to fit a decent sized one. But if I get a new case I might as well just build a new PC, so I'm gonna hold off until it dies. There's only enough space in my mATX case for a 90-ish mm-sized cooler, and the PSU sits right on top of it, so it gets even more heat. Been looking at some old Noctuas.

It's not dead yet so I'm gonna hold off paying respects, and instead it gets a salute (E) and a nod of approval (Mouse up and down).
>>

I've managed to validate the one time where I managed to get the bastard all the way up to 4ghz long enough to get it validated. It crashed shortly after getting the validation, but I didnt care, I was fucking happy.

I also have a screenshot and validation floating around of the one time I got my Pentium Dual-Core E5300 to 4.5ghz. Unlike the C2Q, that puppy was stable, albeit with 1.6v pumping through it.

You should probably check and fiddle around with settings in your BIOS. Most P45 motherboards and 45nm quads are good for 450mhz FSB with some basic tweaking.

Back in the day i chose E6850 over Q6600 for some reason. I still regret it. Not that 6850 was a bad processor, but 4 cores do make a difference and it overclocked like crazy. Q6600 + 8800gtx and you didn't need anything else. Those were the days.

Lap both sides of that heat spreader until they're reflective copper. You might as well.

Also, use a conical foam-tip on a dremel and dip it in rubbing alcohol to remove that black putty from both the spreader and the interposer. Dip the tip into alcohol and spin it up in a cup a few times to get rid of the excess alcohol.

Use at least five grains of sandpaper for the lapping and find the softest foam conical tip you can find. Stick with a low RPM setting for your power tool. Also find a buffing tip if you really want to make a mirror finish on both sides of the heat spreader. It doesn't help with the heat transfer, but damn does it feel good to see your face reflecting off the surface when you're finished.

Yep that tends to happen with the wolfdales. My other E5300 was a much worse chip, requiring 1.45v for 3600 and unable to do 4000 without a colossal fuckton of volts, and was unstable at that speed. Its a side effect of intel's binning process. The best binned chips become the E8000 series, next best become E7000, mid tier bins the second gen E6000, lower mid tier the E5000, and the lowest bins the E3000 celerons.

Just gotta keep trying to get the good one. Fortunately, E5000 series chips are ridiculously cheap on ebay ($5-10 at most)

Aww yeah
>>
>>55256948
I was trying to punch through the instability wall I was running into at 346mhz FSB, and had I managed it I was going to go for 5ghz.

I've also made another attempt at 5ghz, but this was with a Pentium D AKA 2 65nm Pentium 4s on the same package. I got it to 4.7 (1.74v!) before the two chips simply had no more to give, and had to use a slushbucket and my H50 to serve as a heatsink for the enormous amount of heat.

I kinda want to get a couple more 65nm P4 based LGA 775 chips and just go to town on them.

Hey guys I have a Vostro 200 that can only hold a C2D, or Pentium, no C2Q. What would be a good CPU? I was thinking maybe a C2D 8400, which would be a big upgrade from a Pentium 1.8GHz.
>>
I have an i7-930 in my main machine and a Q6700 in my home server
I'd like to upgrade but lets be honest, that ain't happening for a while. And when it does the Nehalem is getting bumped into the server for another five-to-ten years of service.

>>
>>55259524
VMs are a bit sluggish on a C2Q. Everything else is fine. It seeds my torrents, serves as a NAS (8x3TB btrfs RAID6), and occasionally runs some game servers and other miscellaneous stuff.

it's useful, I wouldn't go back to having only one PC.
>>
>>55259611
Shit mines is currently running a Pentium 1.8GHz, an ass of a CPU. The best I could do is throw in a C2D, and 4GB of DDR2.

Would a C2D be enough? I'm also limited to a Vostro 200 case so I can't add all that shit.
>>
>>55259674
really for everything except the VMs a P3 would be fast enough. If you can get the C2D for $20, sure, go for it, but don't spend too much money upgrading a home server until you know what specifically you need the extra grunt for.

Core 2 representing. Purchased 9/17/2008. Has been running almost 24/7 since purchase. I've mined ~4000 bitcoins on this CPU. Its current hard drives have about 50k hours on them and this is the 2nd set of drives I've used. I've had it running behind a UPS for about 5 years now. I've reached 200+ days power on time twice in its lifetime.

Once I build a Broadwell-e box I will retire it and replace it with a 2600k as my media server. I don't know what to do with it once its shut down for good. I should frame it, give it proper final resting place.

Intel said it's still on track for Q4 this year at Computex.

Also, does Kaby Lake's native support for thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 mean that motherboards will have more of those ports by default? It seems kind of weird that thunderbolt seems to be a laptop thing for now.

>>
When will be the next time to upgrade if I already have a Skylake i5? Considering that Kabylake is just an incremental improvement over Skylake meant to basically be a placeholder because Cannonlake got delayed, and Cannonlake is supposed to be a die shrunk Kabylake, will the next architecture after Cannonlake be the optimal time to upgrade? Or will Cannonlake be a big improvement in performance? If Intel was still on the tic-tock model, it'd be an obvious choice for me to wait for what's after Cannonlake, but idk now that they're doing more gradual improvements.
>>
>>55264053
It ain't the '90s anymore. Each generation generally gives you a 5% improvement at most. I doubt this trend will stop any time soon. You're probably good for at least five years or so.
>>
>>55264083
But don't Vulkan and dx12 use the CPU more now, so CPU performance will be more relevant in games? I'll probably upgrade once I'm not satisfied with the IO ports on my motherboard because I have an ITX build so I have no room for expansion. I don't see myself needing to use two or more USB type c ports at once (my motherboard only has one) for a while.
