If windows 10 didn't have all the spying stuff would it be the best windows ever?
>>
I don't care about the spying stuff because most of it is fud.

I don't like that I cant disable defender or updates..
>>
>forced updates
>inconsistent ui

no, it would still be worse than 8.1 and 7
>>
>>55251103
But you can disable both anon.
>>55251084
The UI is inconsistent and the fucking network manager bugs out every other time.

No, it's buggy as shit, always breaks in one way or another after time of using it. Also the latency for games are always fucked up from the start because of the spying shit (that can't be fully disabled)
>>
>>55251488
8 is faster and generally better than 7
7 can't even mount disk images without external tools

Why let the user install a malware antivirus scam program when you can install it for them?
>>
I really hate the UI mix ups, somewhere it's win7, somewhere it's win8, somewhere it's mobile shit
>>
You can disable most of it.

I'm not 100% sure what the point of Cortana is. Can I remaster her to Master Chief?

I prefer the windows 7 start menu, other than that its ace.

No, the UI is still shit

Only if it became free as in freedom.

And then you'd see the code and disregard it completely.
>>
>>55251474
That useless start button is retarded. 8 > 8.1.

The start screen is awesome. People who don't like it are just too autistic to handle change, even if it is obviously for the better.
>>
>>55251084
no. the start menu would still only allow to add software as tiles
>>
>>55251084
No because it has a retarded UI.

XP was the last time the UI was consistent. During the Vista transition they tried to simplify things for normies and ended up complicating a lot of menus. 10 walks back a bunch of little things like scroll-focus-follows-mouse, that hadhad been broken removed since XP.

Ribbon UI was, and is, a shit concept, though.
>>
>>55251084
I didnt like it. Actually just wiped and upgraded my shitty windows laptop to 8.1

It's free for a reason
>>

I agree that Linux blows it out of the water but I've literally never had any of these problems on Windows
>>

Didn't say anythin about Linux, I use 7 with selective updates

>>

>8.1 was the best

I just realized the problem with most /g/ memes is that they argue in favor of something that is demonstrably worse than its successor.

>Spinning disk > SSD
>CRT > LCD
>DAT > CD

There's even a thread up right now arguing that IDE was superior to SATA. I don't know why I didn't catch on to its ubiquity until now.
>>
>>55251984
>>>55251703 (You)
>>upgraded to 8.1

THe only reason its an upgrade is that this laptop has a 5200 rpm drive (might put a 7200 in it later) and windows 10 takes 15 seconds to open the start menu. Even with classic shell.

W10 will start being the best option due to other companies focusing their software development on it, DirectX 12 being the obvious case atm. We've been able to see OS related gains elsewhere. But yes, all the extra unnecessary bloat will keep it down from being the best OS we are capable of having right now.
I'm not that deep into things yet. Does anyone even know what else they changed under the hood? From my tiny experience with the OS, it feels like a re-skinned W8 with loads of spyware and bloat software I have no use for.

That's the main issue really. I can't find information on what the real changes and improvements are when compared to past systems on the core level. The consumers don't know and it seems like even the enthusiast don't have much of an idea.
>>
I use Xubuntu at home, but for fun had the IT guys at work install Win10 on my work PC.

>constantly changes default printer, even with the "setting" unchecked for managing printers
>constantly resetting my default programs, so Edge opens my PDFs and Photos opens my images
>Update notification takes up whole screen instead of a bubble. Pressing escape closes the notification but opens the Settings app

It's annoying as fuck. Many aspects are better than 7 but all these little things add up to piss me off
>>
>7200rpm hdd
>i7-6600u
>8gb ram

It takes two minutes to boot, and opening anything causes the system to stall. Task manager loaded after a godsend, providing me with 8%cpu on idle, and 100% active disk usage. The laptop is unusable on windoes 10. The culprit is the superfetch/search service. (Compared all tasks and services in safemode/regular, simple googling for similar problems, used the system with live Linux systems, and installed three different systems on the hdd itself, all no problems).

It can only be fixed by turning off the service. Microsoft support refuses to acknowledge the issue.

Microsoft never again.

I've since then I've put the distro solus on it and it's smooth.

It's a worthwhile upgrade even if you're using an older OS. And SSD's are getting cheap.
>>
>>55251084
No, it's crap. They destroyed the whole OS with the "modern" bullshit, dual control panels, etc.. Best Windows is 7, after developers stop supporting it, I'll move to Linux.
>>
>>55251084
10 is technically an improved 8.1 version. But with spy and adware. Also shitty "app" designs, even more than 8.1.

Not yet but soon. If they didn't have so much telemetry and spyware it would be the best Windows yet in about a year.

anyone else upset about that tiny lag that every "new ui" feature has? even on modern (2015+) computers with i7 and tons of RAM
start menu - like, I dunno, 50ms before it opens
clock calendar - same, but much longer

on Windows 7: no delay at all

not even speaking about all the inconsistent shit, 3 control panels, modern UI font rendering, that crap

XP has that? Too bad the only machine I use it on is too low resolution to not fullscreen everything

>>55252454
>strawmans is my best argument

Pros:
Reformat with updates takes minutes instead of hours with windows 7
Startup is pretty fast
Registry is actually pretty powerful if you learn how to use it
Cons:
forced Windows Store
forced Windows Apps
forced Updates
forced telemetry
(noticing a pattern?)
>>
>>55251084
Meh, it'd be okay for gaymen, but I'd just stick with Debian and wait for Vulkan to catch up to DX12.
>>
>>55253572
Registry is nothing new to 10

More cons:
Fast Boot can cause random lockups or extremely slow shutdowns on some configurations. FB disable it's only marginally faster than 7 at best.
>>
2000 was best

I don't care about spyware. I have 2 PCs and one of them doesn't connected to internet. Biggest problem of win 10 is shitload of side processes that appear from nowhere (like this shitty compressing memory, when you have fuckin 32gb or RAM)

have a win 10 related question so ill ask here instead of opening another thread.
i just activated a win 7 prof retail license on my pc A. can i now use that key to install win 10 on a new clean rig B?
i used a mak license before i got from university but i read you cant use them to clean install win10,, and i dont want to go through installing win7 on rig B first then upgrading and clean installing win10 after that,.. anyone know?
>>
Considering I'm still fighting graphics driver issues with Windows 10 on my laptop....no
>>
>>55251474
>>55251505

This. Sticking with it till the end.
>>
>>55251119
thought you could only disable them if you have the Pro version of 10
>>
>>55251084
I dislike the file browser, the bloat applications, the fact that Skype reinstalled itself without asking/prompting, the general application layout, the shitty WLS (windows Linux subset) which has nothing to do with Linux and should be named something to do with GNU, the management of applications, and if I could get past that, the only thing I'd change is that I wish that the fucking OS didn't treat me like a fucking noob and be permanently on EZ Mode.
