really depends on where you live and how congested the area is, sometimes cable is shittier than vdsl

some modems will give you a better signal to noise ratio and maybe a better speed becuase of that.
i've found that billion modems (i have a 7800n but theres probably an updated version of that now) have good config options that you can tweak to get a better connection.

That won't do a lot though, maybe 5% speed increase if you are very lucky and your old modem and/or copper lines are really shitty.
