Guy who bought
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/l/32653111593.html
here.

Got a message from the seller that the no backlight version only has blue switches and if they can send me that instead. Going to just cancel this order and buy the backlit one, I can swallow the couple bucks difference though I'd much rather not have any lights on it. Oh well. Just confirming now if they blue light has the black switches or do I have to buy the ugly multi color one.

As far as I'm aware, they're the same cap fitting, but I think there are differences deeper in the switch at some point.

I'm still waiting on an order from Winkeyless where I ordered the tactile Clear version, which is virtually identical. Am pretty thrilled to find out whether the two of us are in line on these. Just got this beauty. (thinkpad compact bluetooth keyboard) Not mechanical, but scissor switches are surprisingly good compared to normal rubber domes. And the trackpoint is soooooo nice.

They feel great, but when I look closely there's some haze around the legends, like the dye bled a little. Is this normal?
>>

That can happen with dyesubbed caps, it's pretty much indicative of the quality of printing. More expensive sets will typically not have this kind of problem.

My dream keyboard is probably the TEX Yoda but I can only find the Thinkpad branded one for like $350 w/o Shipping at some Chink Site. I would kill for one (and arguably break my budget up to $200 for a 60-key plate mounted black keyboard with trackpoint.

Other than that, anything closest to the TEX Yoda without a TrackPoint?

>>55262076

open the switches and blow them out or see whats wrong. you just slide two screwdrivers on the tabs to the left and right side of the switch and pull up on the middle part. Just make sure not to bend the click leaf (beacuse it will change the way the switch feels) and put it back in on the right side of the housing.

I'm not sure what Taihao was thinking when they applied this coating but it is said to give a sticky feeling if it was shipped in extreme shipping conditions but other people just dont like the feel of it
some people have discoloration from the coating but its just the coating being discolored and it washes off easy
most groupbuys ask tai hao to not apply the coating so its not like it even matters unless you buy them off a website w/ it on
its hard to find doubleshots at that price tho so u take ur pick if u think thin PBT isnt for you
thin PBT > any ABS imo but i dont care enough to buy GMK

Pretty much what this (>>55267430) anon posted. Handwiring a keyboard matrix is ridiculously simple. You just make rows with the diodes and columns with your wire and then hook that up to the controller, the rest is a matter of configuring your matrix in the firmware (also really simple business).

>>55267379
Which exact part of the wiring are you referring to?
Those uninsulated wires you're seeing in this (>>55266886) picture are just the contacts of the diodes, connected with solder, both of which you can find on aliexpress (or just about anywhere for that matter).

overcome your fears anon, the worst that can happen is that you fuck up and learn from the mistake that you made.

Nothing grants you coolness points like spending more money on parts for a keyboard than an actual keyboard would cost, breaking shit and then spending even more money in a half-assed attempt to fix it.
No seriously, just take the plunge. Start with something small like a numpad if you're scared, I'll even hold your hand through every single step if you'd like.

>>55267526
Cheers, have fun and keep us posted. What do you plan on building?
>>
>>55267573
>What do you plan on building?

A Terminus Mini clone, probably. But it would cost me over 120$ in parts, which is a bit over my budget that started with a "I'll just get this 40$ chinese mech and be happy with it".

So if I get a pile of money together before I give up on the whole idea, it will be a Terminus Mini.
>>
>>55267638
Did you find any parts yet (e.g. plate or case) ? I've been wanting to build a 40% myself sometime, and I'm quite curious to see that this matrix layout is all about.
I was thinking of designing my own PCB, but that's still going to take a while.
>>
>>55267666
I will probably scam some local laser cutting shop into giving me a solid deal on a tiny (by their standards) order of metal/acrylic plates.
I won't go the PCB way, since that's hella more expensive. And the site you linked me yesterday already designed plates for me, but I'd still have to design a PCB. So PCB would be a total waste of time and money for me.
>>
>>55267732
Yeah, I'd probably etch and drilll my own PCB if I were to design one. The main reason I want to learn PCB design is for the sake of future projects and also just general electronics since I'll be entering EE later this year and it never hurts to already know some things. And because every time I've hand-wired something I begin to question the decisions I made in my life halfway through the process.

>>
>>55267430
Really neat. Thanks for the link. Is this possible with an arduino or can't it poll that fast as needed by a keyboard?
>>
>>55268843
It's 100% possible.
3$ Arduino Pro Micro has a capable processor that's good enough for keyboards. Planck, Terminus Mini and others use it. It can even store several layers in the on-board EEPROM storage. Team behind Terminus Mini made some powerful firmware for it, so you don't even have to write anything yourself.
