Welcome to /flt/ - Friendly Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with Linux.

Wizards assemble !

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution that can heal broken installs. And (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation is licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portgage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new "spells" not found in the "grimoire" (repository) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Steps I followed:
Install Japanese in language support
Install ibus and ibus anthy in package manager
Choose ibus as keyboard input method
Log out then log back in
Go to ibus preferences (in same menu as language support)
Click input method
Click add
Find and add Japanese - Anthy

Now you should be able to change to the Japanese IME by clicking the language icon on the panel.

hey flt,

I want to start using linux, but my current passion is being driven by the desire to rice a laptop to kingdom come and make it the ultimate personal portable workspace, any tips on laptop brand and distro?

Some back story:

I tried ubuntu back in 2008, when I was in highschool, but the lack of video games and peripheral support made it hell. I dabbled with debian/arch with a RasPi at work trying to make a tiny personal portable work station, but I couldn't even get started ricing it (nothing worked)

I used a Mac at work for a software engineering job, and coming from windows and IDEs, holy shit... coding with a terminal is a pure god send, especially when managing remote servers

I left that job and work QA right now, but would love to start coding again, starting with webdev using Elixir

this time, I'll do it right, learning emacs, and the art of 3 terminal windows. Point me to the right direction?

>set strong passwords on all user accounts
>set the option to confine users to their home directory
>set the login shell to /bin/false for everyone but me
>changed the port number
>set up TLS with a self signed certificate, and disallowed connections not using TLS

is there anything else I should do to secure my server?

Try running as root. If it works you've messed up your permissions and might have to add your user to the audio group.

Do you have permissions to /run/user/1000? Your user should be the owner of everything in there.

Apparently no one wanted to maintain it. I am also confused by some of the information.

According to [0]this, it will be moved to qtstyleplugins. According to [1]this, it was already moved. How come that was almost a year ago, but version 5.7 was released recently?

I am trying to compile that new qtstyleplugins, but I can't find any instructions on how to. The people in [2]this thread are claiming it will make Qt programs segfault anyway.

It looks awful. The main issue is inconsistency. People will have GTK themes that look totally different from that Windows like Qt5 style. To get Qt programs to use a custom icon theme, I had to export DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome, but I'm hesitant to do that since it might mess with a few other things too.

just learn vim.

About the laptop I don't think it's important. It's just hardware in the end. If you want to play some games, it's better to go with an nvidia GPU (better drivers => better perf).
About the distribution I don't think it's important.
What you can install on a distribution can be installed on another.
Maybe you'll prefer a distribution like archlinux that doesn't come with a lot of stuff by default so you can install stuff you need only to have a distribution that is exactly as you want. Other distribution you would like is gentoo.

Rebooting takes seconds with an SSD. Even before having one, I always booted into Linux at startup. Only when I was going to play something Windows only I switched. Having windows as your daily OS once you've tried Linux is, for me, almost painful.

I'd say that only affects you if your boot times are very long or if you play videogames during short breaks. Luckily there are tons of Linux-available games for that.

During the final month of writing my thesis I played this during pomodoro breaks (~5 min).

http://store.steampowered.com/app/404410/

It's a free game, in the broadest sense.
>>

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

im using awesome WM and im trying the edit the main menu in the rc.lua so that I can open my browser (qupzilla) that way

Heres what I got
myawesomemenu = {
{ "qupzilla", qupzilla }
}

with that, qupzilla show up in the menu, however when I click it it does not execute qupzilla or even do anything.

what am I doing wrong, I also tried
terminal .. "-e qupzilla"
but that also had no effect and im not quite sure what it means (execute qupzilla via terminal?)

I want a linux distro without all the pre installed DE GUI crap most come with. I will just be using i3 and mostly be in the terminal.

Two choices i'm looking at are Debian (install without DE) and ArchLinux.

No, he's a Arch nigger spreading disinformation.
Debian has three versions, the version "Sid" is fresh and rolling just like Arch.

I should add that if you go with sid, you should not be completely new to GNU/Linux. Also apt-listbugs and apt-listchanges are essential and you should stick to either aptitude or apt-get and not mix both on one install.
>>
>>55250887

YOu don't. If the program is using GTK3, it will use the GTK3 theme. If it uses GTK2 it will use the GTK2 theme.
Good GTK themes come with both GTK2 and 3 styles which look consistent.

Yeah, but if they are equal in software quality, the second most important factor is the license, even in free software licenses there are differences and you may prefer some over the other. it really doesn't matter which of both you use.

I'm quite impressed. Didn't think it would be so complete, was expecting having to play lego with the terminal, but everything is more or less intuitive and the main uses of a comp (office, web-surfing) can be directly applied.

Hello 9GAG.

I just booted back on Windows after a week and noticed that things like dragging around windows etc. feel much more fluid and the system doesn't get sluggish when watching html5 videos or so.

Dual booting Arch with XFCE4 and Compton as composite manager. I tweaked the compton.conf with settings to make it perform better too (as recommended on its github site).
As for video drivers (GTX 970), I've tried the stable and beta ones from the AUR. CPU is an i5 2500k and while the scaling governor is set to "powersave" (default for my CPU apparently), it scales up just fine to ~4200mhz.

Please help, what am I doing wrong?

I don't think there's a way to fix that. Browsing the internet with Firefox feels so much more responsive and less sluggish on Windows than on Linux.
Navigating through YouTube sometimes makes me want to kill myself and I don't even use it that often. Opening webpages brings things to a halt and it's pretty annoying.

If I allow the machine itself to be installed to C does it take up a lot of storage there? Or should I install it to the drive where I want it to take up its virtual storage? What do I do?

Some people start with arch linux, so you can. Read the arch wiki, there a few stuff talking about the distribution. If you get the idea of this distribution if you like their point of view, why not, but you should know that it can be difficult for a new user.

If you prefer something that works out of the box and don't want to learn a lot of stuff, go with a just work distribution

Got a Thinkpad T450s.

Used Linux on an X220 as well as a Surface Pro 3. I very largely depend on using Visual Studio for work as well as Atom and the like.
Would a VM with Windows 10 on it perform well? I've got 12GB of RAM and an i7 on it. I would also like to try dual-booting but ever since I did it on the Surface Pro 3, eventually I couldn't install shit like GRUB because of some EFI error that wouldn't let me write to it ever. I tried fixing it for weeks and ever put it on the Ubuntu forums but no one replied. The EFI partition would never delete, ever, and it still had shit from all the other Linux distros I had in the past.

Just gotta know if it's gonna be safe on this new Thinkpad or if I'm better just using Windows and perhaps waiting for the terminal coming this summer to Windows 10.

You got a hard drive (or various hard drive). You can create various partitions on a hard drive. On a partition you'll have an OS installed, on the other drive you'll have a second OS installed.
There's a software called GRUB, that will prompt you which OS you want to use when you start your computer.

How do I get GRUB to look like the right rather than the left?

The left GRUB style used in debian and Antergos tends to lag very badly on my machine (i5 6400, 8GB ddr4) with each keypress to the point where it often just freezes. However, on Fedora (which uses the right GRUB style) GRUB is very responsive and does not freeze. Is there a way to implement this so no matter what distro I'm running I can have a responsive GRUB?

Hardware wise it's all the same, you won't notice any difference for basic desktop usage. With desktop usage I mean that, using the utilities provided by the desktop environment. I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.
>>
>>55257966
Well, they say "for Windows, OS X, and Linux." Two of those are operating systems I'm familiar with, and I assumed the last was as well. I'm getting a cheap computer and I need a simple free OS. I was thinking about getting Linux. Just tell me what to download.
