why are people praising the 480 as the next best thing since slice bread?
amd has always had a 980 performance style card, but it was a house fire. now they have a non house fire version for $200. 150 watt tdp, 15 watts lower than the 980 itself. its a terrible upgrade for someone on a 970 or 390. it be decent for someone on the terrible 960 / 380 but still not tremendously great.
it would of been awesome if they released a 980 ti equivalent for $200. that would of been a massive slap in the face to nvidia. but they didn't. they couldn't even release a card that was 15% faster than the 980. resulting in it being at least 15% lower than the 980 ti. but they didn't. instead they release a card maybe on a good day 5% faster?
from what i can tell its nothing.

They're adressing a market segment that was being neglected. There was hardly any marketing directed towards the price point that AMD just recenlty decided to target -- and by recently I mean it's not even one whole month past yet.
It's getting quite clear already that this was a smart decision, regardless the success of the Polaris cards themselves, I think that people are just satisfied that they're concerns are being addressed. Yes, I don't care how rich yourself are, most of the market is buying at this price point and below when you throw 3rd world shitholes into the mix. The strategy of trickling down the halo effect from the 1 thousand + cards on their respective lower tiers is plain dishonest since they usually share nothing but a similar SKU number series.

Some people haven't bought a 980 tier card yet because it has been unnecessary.
Now it is becoming affordable and comes with good dx12 support.
It is faster than the 980 when you OC it, and it will knock on the 1070's door when fully OCed with an aftermarket cooler.
All benchmarks are meaningless until we get the reviews with the new driver which has only just gone out to reviewers so I've been reading.

All leaks thus far have used the old driver. Reviewers are just getting the new driver which utilizes the new architecture (256 shaders etc).
I expect to see around a 10% boost or more on the official benchmarks at stock clock speeds.

It was never meant to be a new best graphics card. It was meant to be able to compete with the best graphics cards at a much lower price point. Which basically means it's a much better deal than the other top of the line graphics cards. It will be widely used in consoles and pre-assembled gaming computers as a result

1. It`s not the top end card. The entire purpose of the polaris lineup is to raise the technological accepted minimum. They`re making a card that, according to the image you posted is a hair faster than a 980 with an 11% overclock. Which in the article that image came from, the systems with the OC`d cards had higher clocked 6 core CPUs vs the rx480 using a 4 core.
2. This card is rumored to overclock up to 1500mhz with the reference TDP and still have manageable temps while using a heatsink that would typically be seen on something like a celeron. Seriously, it`s fucking tiny. Be sure to see cards with 8 pin and possibly 8+6 pin power connections for even more ludicrous overclocking.
3. There are people still running HD 4000 series cards. There are still people using FERMI of all fucking things. This kind of performance for an affordable price will having people throwing their money at their computer screens. It`ll be the go to card for cute cubes, efficiency nuts, and price : Perf nazis.
4. It`s going to be less than $250, fully DX12 compliant, all new technology on a die shrink, and supposedly these benches are using outdated drivers that don`t utilize the new tech.

AMD did their math. 80% of graphic card buyers are between 200-300 dollars. This is the prime market to target. Leave Novidya to the enthusiast tier which is less then 13% of the market share. The King budget card is the RX480 that can up to 980ti performance on stock.

It's a $200 card that performs on par with the oppositions $400 cards. And since it uses 110-130W in-game, it doesn't need much cooling.
Low price + low power + high performance = wins in EVERY segment of the market, except the ultra high end.
And since it is a small chip, it is easy to manufacture too, so they can build and sell significantly more of them than Nvidia can of their cards.

I was planning on upgrading my entire system soon anyway. Im using a i52500k, 7970, 8gb of ddr3 ram at 1000Mghz .
So im due for a new system. The only thing is im looking at just saying fuck it and doing crossfire 480's. I want to be able to game at 2K at over 90 FPS. The games ill be playing are probably overwatch, witcher 3, modded out skyrim, and doom for probably the next year.

Because I fell for the "$400+ Nvidia card will last you a few years" meme, and I'm ready for an upgrade from my GTX 670.
RX 480 will be 2x more powerful with less wattage, have support for DP 1.3, and be under $250.
The old VLIW chips from AMD don't get optimizations anymore, but the GCN family (SIMT based) is expected to continue for several more years at least.
