Dammit I think I still hear a hydraulics pump. They really should go full electric here. Boston Dynamics is kill. However, if this trend of decreasing size continues we might get a dog sized version by christmas 2017.

Hopefully the addition of they eyes will cut down on the "Boston Dynamics makes new creepy robot" stuff.

Well, the video included shots where it was putting dishes into a dishwasher, grabbing a beer, carrying cargo... Wearing googley-eyes...

It also runs on cheaper electric motors. In theory they could eventually make a consumer-affordable version, compensating the cheaper components with software.

Too bad Alphabet is looking to unload the firm; if it integrates with the home automation stuff that thing would basically complete a smart home. Have it pick up your laundry, put it in the washer, tell the washer to wash, let the washer inform you your laundry is finished, while the robot moves onto loading the dishwasher and carrying the roomba to the next floor.

The idea of a robot is that it is a labor-saving device that frees your time to do things that are more productive. I know this may be hard to understand for you, but you don't have to creepily stare at the robot while it loads your dishwasher while you touch yourself. You don't even have to be in the same building. In principle, you could be doing useful work.

That's how the tech industry works now. Make something cool, sell your company for millions or billions of dollars. It's Google or NG's problem figuring out how to make their Boston Dynamics division profitable. If it turns out that they can't do that, it just becomes a bad bet and doesn't really matter as long as other purchases are good bets.

Depends on if they have any armor whatsoever. If they don't have any then a shotgun with buckshot would be your best choice. With the most basic of armor though shotguns would quickly become worthless as the pellets used by shotguns actually have very little energy when compared to pistol ammunition (pic related covers what soft body armor is rated against in the US). An important thing to consider when shooting at robots as opposed to people is that they don't feel pain, therefore you absolutely must hit something vital otherwise they'll completely shrug it off. Another important thing to note is that ammunition generally associated with doing more damage to people and animals will not have much additional effect on robots as they aren't soft and dense, hollow point ammunition will not expand and fragmenting ammunition won't fragment for the most part (it could still work but it would be a crapshoot as it would have to fragment instantly after penetrating whatever outer covering while still having enough energy to damage the internals), this negates almost all of the advantages of rifle calibers short of additional penetration that may be necessary to reach whatever is vital. Also important to take into consideration is that it would be cheaper to armor a robot than a person, one of the main problems with armor is that it deforms when shot (leading to the commonly heard reports of broken ribs or other internal injuries even though the armor stopped the bullet, for armor to be rated to protect against a type of ammunition it must be able to stop it without deforming a dangerous amount) which can easily be negated on a robot by simply providing a small amount of extra space between the vitals and the armor allowing for less armor material to be used than what would be needed to protect a human.

I wasn't part of that convo but everything he said about body armor is correct.

my take on it; why would you even bother putting ballistic armor on a robot? I can see adding something like motorcycle fairings just to protect sensitive parts from environmental exposures, but why even bother armoring it against weaponry? there will always be a cheap way to beat it and its not even alive, why bother protecting it? you'd spend less building 3 more unarmored robots than you would armoring the first one and operating it daily with all the extra weight. It would be able to carry less cargo, due to armor weight, it would take more fuel, have shorter utility times due to fuel consumption, and be generally less stealthy and more cumbersome.

Its already stupid expensive outfitting people with body armor just to keep them alive, it makes zero sense to armor robots against gunfire unless their sole purpose is to draw sustained gunfire

I already deal with robots that need armoring I can say its not worth it.

In the case of multi rotor drones. There are definate advantages to having prop guards, they guard your props. You have a much higher likelihood of damaging props and motors, whole arms even, without prop guards, but the drain the added weight puts on the battery makes it a no brainer for all the pilots I know to ditch the prop guards and fly with exposed props. They also affect the movement of the vehicle (more succeptible to wind) and that is another reason to avoid using them.

I would think big-dog armor would be the same way. while it might protect that particular vehicle much better, the added weight, increased power consumption, and difference in handling of the vehicle would negate the benefits using armor

Hell armor in and of itself is really expensive to maintain and replace. If the cost of armor even begins to approach the cost of the robot it becomes less favorable to outfit it with armor.
For the price of one robot with armor you might have been able to operate 2 or three robots without armor. If that armor takes a beating than it will need to be replaced, at great cost. If there is nothing to keep alive in the first place its just a huge waste of resources

>>
>>55231226
>Do you think copper buckshot would work?
It would likely be an improvement in the event of problems penetrating the robot's normal skeleton assuming no armor. In the event that the robodog is armored it would still likely fail to penetrate. There are always shotgun shells loaded with flechettes if you're dealing with anything armored against pistol ammunition, but most companies half ass it resulting in the flechettes tumbling end over end and not hitting point first (which would result in them not penetrating the armor) along with possible damage to the barrel of your shotgun (due to using normal shot cups that can potentially have parts of the flechettes poke through them), they also tend to be expensive at $2.50-$5 per round so you might just be better off going with a rifle and practicing more.

>>55231405
>why would you even bother putting ballistic armor on a robot?
Because the cheap ways to beat it aren't as convenient and it's more effective to have 1 robot be able to do the job than 3. Also protection against pistol ammunition/fragmentation (first being the biggest threat in an LE role, second being the biggest threat in a military role) can be quite light weight now days. You also don't have to worry about covering the whole thing in armor, just wherever the main controller circuit would be, the vital sensors, and the servos (hydraulics would be hard to armor without covering the whole thing though). The skeleton could simply be overbuilt to work with bullet holes in it and wiring could be done with redundancy in the unlikely chance that it gets hit.
